We show that the latest version of massively parallel processing associative string processing architecture (System-V) is applicable for fast Monte Carlo simulation if an effective on-processor random number generator is implemented. Our lagged Fibonacci generator can produce 10/sup 8/ random numbers on a processor string of 12 K PE-s. The time dependent Monte Carlo algorithm of the one-dimensional non-equilibrium kinetic Ising model performs 80 faster than the corresponding serial algorithm on a 300 MHz UltraSparc.

Behavioral simulation including the impact of architectural choices is required to help the designer in reducing design ambiguities and errors of embedded complex systems which are distributed (for performance and reliability requirements) and present hard real-time features (time critical avionics functions), as early in the product life cycle as possible. This paper presents a modeling and simulation approach for real-time performance analysis of advanced modular avionics architectures that must operate with hard real-time constraints. Proposed models allow the design capture at increased level of abstraction, including the description of avionics real-time software architecture, target modular hardware architecture made up of available components, and clustering and mapping of the software architecture on the hardware architecture. These models have been coupled with a commercially available discrete event simulation environment that allows real-time performance evaluation.

Optimism is a technique used by the Time Warp paradigm to make decisions about event execution under uncertainty. While the benefits of throttling the optimism of Time Warp has been studied, the benefits of extending optimism to operations besides event execution is presented in this paper. Specifically, we discuss how optimism can be mapped to fossil collection which has traditionally been assumed to be a non-recoverable operation that must be performed under global control. Optimistic Fossil Collection (OFC) is a technique for fossil collection that does not require global control. However, as states are fossil collected optimistically, a recovery mechanism is required to recover from errors. Performance results show that Time Warp using OFC can improve the performance of simulations on a network of workstations. Another benefit of OFC is that the simulation checkpoints provide for fault tolerance in more than just fossil collection.

We have developed a set of performance prediction tools which help to estimate the achievable speedups from parallelizing a sequential simulation. The tools focus on two important factors in the actual speedup of a parallel simulation program: the simulation protocol used; and the inherent parallelism in the simulation model. The first two tools are a performance/parallelism analyzer for a conservative, asynchronous simulation protocol, and a similar analyzer for a conservative, synchronous (super-step) protocol. Each analyzer allows us to study how the speedup of a model changes with increasing number of processors, when a specific protocol is used. The third tool-a critical path analyzer-gives on ideal upper bound to the model's speedup. This paper gives an overview of the prediction tools, and reports the predictions from applying the tools to a discrete-event wafer fabrication simulation model. The predictions are close to speedups from actual parallel implementations. These tools help us to set realistic expectations of the speedup from a parallel simulation program, and to focus our work on issues which are more likely to yield performance improvement.

In recent years, the Multilevel Fast Multipole Method (MLFMA) [14, 17} has been developed into one of the most powerful techniques for accelerating the iterative solution of integral equations of electromagnetics. It has been shown that the MLFMA reduces the computational complexity of a matrix-vector multiply from 0(N2) to 0{N log A'), where N is the number of unknowns. In an attempt to extend the range of problems that can be solved using this technique, we have recently developed an application independent, parallel MLFMA kernel, called ScaleME. for distributed memory computers using MP1. In this paper, we shall discuss the characteristic features which distinguishes it from its static counterpart, such as work required for each level, the size of multipole expansions and interpolation/filtering operations, and their influence in the parallel algorithm design. We shall follow it with a discussion of major issues in the paralleliza-Tion which are unique to the dynamic MLFMA, such as reducing the memory requirements for translation operators and the reduction of replicated geometric data structures. We shall also briefly discuss the load balancing strategies. Finally, we shall present some representative numerical results from some ScalaME accelerated electromagnetic scattering codes, including a simulation involving 4 million unknowns and that of the radar cross-section computation of a full scale air-craft on a Beowulf class cluster. © 2000 IEEE.

In video databases, a video document has two abstractions. The high level abstraction corresponds to the view in which the contents of that video document are seen by end users. And the low level abstraction corresponds to the physical organization of that video document. We propose a novel prefetching strategy that merges the two views of a video document to trigger prefetching at the video server level. We focus on the impact of the high level view on the proposed prefetching technique. Specifically, we study the behavior of the prefetching technique under different typologies of the video database contents. The simulation experiments show an improvement of between 10% and 23%.

This paper describes a new, auto-adaptive algorithm for dead reckoning in DIS. In general dead-reckoning algorithms use a fixed threshold to control the extrapolation errors. Since a fixed threshold cannot adequately handle the dynamic relationships between moving entities, a multi-level threshold scheme is proposed. The definition of threshold levels is based on the concepts of area of interest (AOI) and sensitive region (SR), and the levels of threshold are adaptively adjusted based on the relative distance between entities during the simulation. Various experiments were conducted. The results show that the proposed auto-adaptive dead reckoning algorithm can achieve considerable reduction in update packets without sacrificing accuracy in extrapolation.

This paper considers the application of bio-inspired systems in the design of a novel and highly parallel image processing tool to detect edges within conventional grey-scale images. The aim of the work is to implement a new image processing architecture through evolvable hardware that is able to adapt according to the particular images encountered. The simulation of such a system through the use of evolutionary algorithms and genetic programming is demonstrated for the conventional image processing operation of edge detection. Results are presented for this system and evaluated with respect to a conventional Sobel edge detector.

In optimistic parallel simulations, state-saving techniques have been traditionally used to realize rollback. We propose reverse computation as an alternative approach, and compare its execution performance against that of state-saving. Using compiler techniques, we describe an approach to automatically generate reversible computations, and to optimize them to transparently reap the performance benefits of reverse computation. For certain fine-grain models, such as queuing network models, we show that reverse computation can yield significant improvement in execution speed coupled with significant reduction in memory utilization, as compared to traditional state-saving. On sample models using reverse computation, we observe as much as three-fold improvement in execution speed over traditional state-saving.

This paper introduces a novel algorithm, the Active Virtual Network Management Protocol (AVNMP), for predictive network management. It explains how the Active Virtual Network Management Protocol facilitates the management of an active network by allowing future predicted state information within an active network to be available to network management algorithms. This is accomplished by coupling ideas from optimistic discrete event simulation with active networking. The optimistic discrete event simulation method used is a form of self-adjusting Time Warp. It is self-adjusting because the system adjusts for predictions which are inaccurate beyond a given tolerance. The concept of a streptichron and autoanaplasis are introduced as mechanisms which take advantage of the enhanced flexibility and intelligence of active packets. Finally, it is demonstrated that the Active Virtual Network Management Protocol is a feasible concept.
