the 25th HIPS workshop, a full-day meeting on May 18th at the ieee IPDPS 2020 conference in New Orleans (now virtual), focuses on high-level programming of multiprocessors, compute clusters, and massively parallel machines. Like previous workshops in the series, which was established in 1996, this event serves as a forum for research in the areas of parallel applications, language design, compilers, runtime systems, and programming tools. It provides a timely forum for scientists and engineers to present the latest ideas and findings in these rapidly changing fields. In our call for papers, we especially encouraged innovative approaches in the areas of emerging programming models for large-scale parallel systems and many-core architectures.

In the paper an introductory research on visual system for underwater scene change detection and environment monitoring by an autonomous underwater drone is described. the systems sensor front-end is composed of a side-scan sonar, a set of video cameras and lighting module. the system contains a number of processing blocks. First is responsible for signal filtering and conditioning. the main processing unit is based on a change detection module operating with our tensor based scene change detection unit. thanks to our developed parallel algorithm for tensor based model construction, the system is able to find abrupt scene changes, as well as presence of previously unseen objects which can be of interest and which are left for further monitored. In the work-in-progress report the system architecture, theoretical foundations, as well as preliminary experimental results are presented.

Stochastic gradient descent (SGD) is a well-known method for regression and classification tasks. However, it is an inherently sequential algorithm-at each step, the processing of the current example depends on the parameters learned from previous examples. Prior approaches to parallelizing linear learners using SGD, such as HOGWILD! and ALLREDUCE, do not honor these dependencies across threads and thus can potentially suffer poor convergence rates and/or poor scalability. this paper proposes SYMSGD, a parallel SGD algorithm that, to a first-order approximation, retains the sequential semantics of SGD. Each thread learns a local model in addition to a model combiner, which allows local models to be combined to produce the same result as what a sequential SGD would have produced. this paper evaluates SYMSGD's accuracy and performance on 6 datasets on a shared-memory machine shows up-to 11x speedup over our heavily optimized sequential baseline on 16 cores and 2.2x, on average, faster than HOGWILD!.

this paper presents an effort for overcoming the complexities of program optimizations on SW26010, the heterogeneous many-core processor that powers Sunway TaihuLight, the world top one supercomputer. the solution centers around a precise, static performance model for modern many-core processor. through a careful design that leverages the special properties of SW26010 and an effective treatment to massive parallelism, the model achieves a high accuracy, showing less than 5% average errors in estimating program execution performance. the precise performance model opens many opportunities for analyzing and guiding code optimizations. the paper demonstrates the usefulness by revealing a series of insights on the effects of some important code optimizations on SW26010. Moreover, it demonstrates that with such a precise performance model, it is feasible to replace empirical auto-tuning with static auto-tuning for optimizing regular loops on heterogeneous many-core systems. Such a replacement speeds up the tuning process by as much as a factor of 43 while keeping the tuning quality loss below 6%.

Elephant flows usually transfer significant amount of data in the network, which may tend to cause network congestion and impact the network performance. therefore, the accurate, timely and low-cost elephant flow detection is crucial in efficient network management. Taking advantages of SDN (software defined network), the elephant flow detection appears a fresh developing change. this paper firstly describes the related management mechanisms in SDN. then according to the detecting location, the elephant detection approaches are classified into two kinds: detection in switch and detection in end host. In switches, the detection approaches are well studied and can be not only based on the Flow-Statistics threshold but also based on flow characteristics. In end-hosts, the detection approaches are mainly based on the Flow-Statistics threshold and often collecting flow-statistics through monitoring socket buffer or hypervisor. Finally, the paper makes a performance comparison and puts forward several points of future prediction in terms of the elephant flow detection taking the deepening development of SDN into account.

Winter oilseed rape (Brassica napus) is an important annual crop in many parts of the world. Investigation of structural and developmental branching patterns could lead to improvements in rape breeding and cultivation, and furthermore could lead to improved methods to investigate tree branching patterns. We carried out two-year experiments with two rape plant cultivars for each year. the branches and pods of more than 50 rape plants were counted for each cultivar of each year. Additionally, 3D coordinates of plant structural elements were measured and modeled for four representative rape plants near the maturation phase of growth. For each cultivar, we found the mean number of primary lateral branches per plant was significantly different between different years, but within each year there were no significant differences in the distribution of primary branch number between the two cultivars. Results were different for the total number of all primary and secondary lateral branches per plant and the total number of pods on the main stem per plant. their frequency distributions changed a lot between different years, cultivars and locations, although the mean values were not significantly different. the 3D measurements showed that azimuth angles of pods and branches were uniformly distributed over 360 degrees, and the inclination angles of pods were centered closely about zero degrees (horizontal). there are challenging aspects of plant structural measurement methodology and structural modeling that have yet to be resolved.

How can we optimally trade extra computing power to reduce the communication load in distributed computing? We answer this question by characterizing a fundamental tradeoff between computation and communication in distributed computing, i.e., the two are inversely proportional to each other. More specifically, a general distributed computing framework, motivated by commonly used structures like MapReduce, is considered, where the overall computation is decomposed into computing a set of "Map" and "Reduce" functions distributedly across multiple computing nodes. A coded scheme, named "coded distributed computing" (CDC), is proposed to demonstrate that increasing the computation load of the Map functions by a factor of r (i.e., evaluating each function at r carefully chosen nodes) can create novel coding opportunities that reduce the communication load by the same factor. An information-theoretic lower bound on the communication load is also provided, which matches the communication load achieved by the CDC scheme. As a result, the optimal computation-communication tradeoff in distributed computing is exactly characterized. Finally, the coding techniques of CDC is applied to the Hadoop TeraSort benchmark to develop a novel CodedTeraSort algorithm, which is empirically demonstrated to speed up the overall job execution by 1.97× - 3.39×, for typical settings of interest. © 2017 ieee.

Large scale computing and applications with large data sets often cause high cache miss rate because of using array of structures or linked-list data structure. When traversing these data structures, the memory accesses may have constant long strides across pages on virtual address (VA), but mostly scatter over the physical address (PA). therefore, conventional stride prefetcher (SP) based on PA cannot prefetch data efficiently here. In this paper, we propose a hardware data prefetching design named Virtual Address-based Stride Prefetcher (VASP) to exploit the prefetch potential of long-stride access pattern on VA. VASP detects the access strides on VA including those cross pages, then it predicts a new VA and prefetches data after address translation. We implement VASP in the gem5 simulator and use SPEC CPU2006 integer benchmarks to evaluate its performance. Our simulation results show that, compared with SP, applying VASP to caches offers up to 43% performance improvement in the mcf benchmark, and improves the overall performance by 6%.

the benefits of applying advanced illumination models to volume visualization have been demonstrated by many researchers. For a parallel distributed, GPU computing environment, however, there is no efficient algorithm for scalable global illumination calculations. this paper presents a parallel, data-distributed and GPU-accelerated algorithm for volume rendering with advanced lighting. Our approach features tunable soft shadows for enhancing perception of complex spatial structures and relationships. For lighting calculations, our design effectively avoids data exchange among GPUs. Performance evaluation on a GPU cluster using up to 128 GPUs shows scalable rendering performance, with both the number of GPUs and volume data size.
