In recent years cloud services have gained much attention as a result of their availability, scalability, and low cost. One use of these services has been for the execution of scientific workflows as part of Big Data Analytics, which are employed in a diverse range of fields including astronomy, physics, seismology, and bioinformatics. there has been much research on heuristic scheduling algorithms for these workflows due to the problem's inherent complexity, however existing work has mainly considered execution in a utility grid environment using a generic distributed framework. For our research, we consider the ever-increasingly popular Apache Hadoop framework for scheduling workflow onto resources rented from cloud service providers. Contrary to other distributed frameworks, the Hadoop MapReduce model imposes a functional style onto application definition, and as such presents an interesting and unapproached challenge for workflow scheduling. Investigated in our work is budget-constrained workflow scheduling on the Hadoop MapReduce platform, wherein we devise both an optimal and a heuristic approach to minimize workflow makespan while satisfying a given budget constraint. We have implemented modifications to the Apache Hadoop framework to allow fully integrated workflow scheduling. these modifications are novel and have led to the completion of the first generic workflow scheduler fully integrated with the Apache Hadoop framework. Both the framework modifications and the proposed scheduler implementation have been extensively tested via execution on multiple workflow applications, which demonstrates the ability of our implementation to handle all possible workflow substructures. Results from our empirical studies further establish these facts.

Sort-last parallel rendering can be improved by considering the rendering of multiple images at a time. Most parallel rendering algorithms consider the generation of only a single image. this makes sense when performing interactive rendering where the parameters of each rendering are not known until the previous rendering completes. However, in situ visualization often generates multiple images that do not need to be created sequentially. In this paper we present a simple and effective approach to improving parallel image generation throughput by amortizing the load and overhead among multiple image renders. Additionally, we validate our approach by conducting a performance study exploring the achievable speed-ups in a variety of image-based in situ use cases and rendering workloads. On average, our approach shows a 1.5 to 3.7 fold improvement in performance, and in some cases, shows a 10 fold improvement.

Today, by integrating Near Field Communication (NFC) technology in smartphones, bank cards and payment terminals, a purchase transaction can be executed immediately without any physical contact, without entering a PIN code or a signature. Europay Mastercard Visa (EMV) is the standard dedicated for securing contactless-NFC payment transactions. However, it does not ensure two main security proprieties: (1) the authentication of the payment terminal to the client's payment device, (2) the confidentiality of personal banking data. In this paper, we first of all detail EMV standard and its security vulnerabilities. then, we propose a solution that enhances the EMV protocol by adding a new security layer aiming to solve EMV weaknesses. We formally check the correctness of the proposal using a security verification tool called Scyther. © 2016 ieee.

Dangling pointer error is pervasive in C/C++ programs and it is very hard to detect. this paper introduces an efficient detector to detect dangling pointer error in C/C++ programs. By selectively leave some memory accesses unmonitored, our method could reduce the memory monitoring overhead and thus achieves better performance over previous methods. Experiments show that our method could achieve an average speed up of 9% over previous compiler instrumentation based method and more than 50% over previous page protection based method. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Given the large amount of data from different sources that have become available to researchers in multiple fields, Data Science has emerged as a new paradigm for exploring and getting value from that data. In that context, new parallel processing environments with abstract programming interfaces, like Spark, were proposed to try to simplify the development of distributed programs. Although such solutions have become widely used, achieving the best performance with them is still not always straight-forward, despite the multiple run-time strategies they use. In this work we analyze some of the causes of performance degradation in such systems and, based on that analysis, we propose a tool to improve performance by dynamically adjusting data partitioning and parallelism degree in recurrent applications based on previous executions. Our results applying that methodology show consistent reductions in execution time for the applications considered, with gains of up to 50%.

Consider the continuous distributed monitoring model in which n distributed nodes, receiving individual data streams, are connected to a designated server. the server is asked to continuously monitor a function defined over the values observed across all streams while minimizing the communication. We study a variant in which the server is equipped with a broadcast channel and is supposed to keep track of an approximation of the set of nodes currently observing the k largest values. Such an approximate set is exact except for some imprecision in an -neighborhood of the k-th largest value. this approximation of the Top-k-Position Monitoring Problem is of interest in cases where marginal changes (e.g. due to noise) in observed values can be ignored so that monitoring an approximation is sufficient and can reduce communication. this paper extends our results from [6], where we have developed a filter-based online algorithm for the (exact) Top-k-Position Monitoring Problem. there we have presented a competitive analysis of our algorithm against an offline adversary that also is restricted to filter-based algorithms. Our new algorithms as well as their analyses use new methods. We analyze their competitiveness against adversaries that use both exact and approximate filter-based algorithms, and observe severe differences between the respective powers of these adversaries.

this paper proposes a new decentralized control strategy for parallel inverters operating in an islanded Microgrid. the proposed technique uses the Uncertainty and Disturbance Estimation (UDE) strategy in order to generate a virtual output impedance while keeping the voltage of the internal Elctro-Motive Force (EMF) source equal for all the inverters in the system. the system achieves accurate current sharing over a broad spectrum, which is proportional to the inverter capacity. Simulation results are provided to illustrate the performance of this method.(1)

this paper proposes a nonlinear reduced-order model of a grid-connected AC Microgrid as seen from the point of common coupling (PCC) to the grid. the model is based on the dynamics of a single droop-control generator and aims to reproduce the behavior of the low-voltage grid with a minimum set of parameters. the model is first derived considering an infinite bus at the PCC, showing the fundamental procedure and the physical meaning of the parameters of the model. A large-scale real-world scenario with sixty households and ten distributed generators is presented, including simulations and comparisons for the case of a non-stiff medium voltage grid.
