This work describes a novel minirobotics system which incorporates mature technology proven efficient over the years in multi-agent robotic soccer competitions into a new versatile research and educational platform. We describe the technical aspects supporting this multi-agent robotic framework, and as an example application, we describe a method for introducing agent based programming concepts as a hands-on experience targeted at inexperienced students learning C as their first programming language.

The implementation process of complex agent and multi-agentsystems (AMAS) can benefit significantly from a simulation platform that would allow rapid prototyping and testing of initial design ideas and choices. Such a platform, should ideally have a small learning curve, easy implementation and visualisation of the AMAS under development, while preserving agent oriented programming characteristics that would allow to easily port the design choices to a fully-fledged agent development environment. However, these requirements make such a simulation platform an ideal learning tool as well. We argue that NetLogo meets most of the requirements that suit our criteria. In addition, we describe two extra NetLogo libraries, one for BDI-like agents and one for ACL-like communication that allow effortless development of goal-oriented agents, that communicate using FIPA-ACL messages. We present one simulation scenario that employs these libraries to provide an implementation in which agents cooperate under a Contract Net protocol.

In this work, an agent architecture that combines defeasible argumentation and the BDI model is described. Argumentation will be used as a mechanism for reasoning about beliefs, for filtering desires considering the agent's current environment, and for selecting proper intentions. The approach allows to define different types of agents and this will affect the way in which desires are filtered and hence, which intention is selected. For performing defeasible reasoning, the approach uses a concrete framework based on a working defeasible argumentation system: Defeasible Logic programming (DeLP). A set of filtering rules, represented as a defeasible logic program, will be used to represent reasons for and against adopting desires. Thus, based on its perceived or derived beliefs, the agent will argue about which of its desires are achievable in the current situation. To clarify the ideas two applications will be introduced to show two significantly different types of agent that can be implemented using this approach.

While distributed multi-agentsystems are especially suitable for taking advantage of the capacity for evolution and adaptation in ubiquitous computing, writing such programs is a difficult and complicated task if not supported by an agentprogramming framework. This paper presents a real-time agent service layer (RT-ASL) that is built on an existing de facto standard for interconnecting distributed objects, CORBA middleware. RT-ASL enables programmers to write distributed cooperative application programs for ubiquitous computing using a high-level abstraction of software agents. As criteria for designing RT-ASL on CORBA, we have made four important decisions regarding the message passing communication mechanism for agent communications, agent service discovery mechanism, real-time agent communication language, and real-time generic scheduling interfaces. This paper justifies the importance of such design decisions and how they can effectively deal with the complicated difficulties.

It is emphasized in numerous prospective studies that the development of swarms of Unmanned Aerial Vehicules (UAV) should be important in the next years. However, the design of these new multi-agentsystems involves to take up many challenges. In particular, reducing the number of operators requires to define new interfaces in order to interact with such autonomous multirobot systems. We present an approach that allows one operator to control a swarm of UAVs in the context of simulated patrolling and pursuit tasks. Self-organized control relying on digital pheromones, as well as authority sharing based on several operating modes are defined. Experiments with human operators on the simulated system show that the combination of the two approaches is effective.
Logic programming Update Languages were proposed as an extension of logic programming, which allow for modelling the dynamics of knowledge bases where both extensional knowledge (facts) as well as intentional knowledg...
