In this paper, we present an agent coordination framework with quantitative timing constraints for time critical multi-agentsystems. The framework can be used for automatically detecting if interaction behaviors among agents are timing consistent w.r.t given tasks. Reo is a channel-based exogenous coordination model which can be used not only for the communication, but also for the coordination of individual agents. 2APL is an agent-oriented programming language where at the multi-agent level one can specify for individual agents which external environments they have access to. In this paper, we understand Reo networks as specific environments for 2APL agents and we focus on the integration of Reo networks into the 2APL platform. We show how Reo networks can be used to coordinate the behaviour of individual agents by means of an auction example.

One of the main reasons behind the success of the Web is that many "regular users" are able to create Web pages that, using hyperlinks, incrementally extend both the size and the complexity of the Web itself. The development of agents in the Web infrastructure should ideally be driven by the same paradigm: users being able to write simple or advanced agents. These agents will then provide capabilities using a set of resources, such as standard Web pages, Web services and, of course;other agents. However, agents providing advanced services will never be developed in the same way as Web pages have been created in the past. In fact programmingagents is a complex task that needs adequate skills and tools in order to be carried out successfully. As a consequence, only few people are currently able to contribute to their development. The question that arises is whether this gap could be possibly reduced in the future. In this paper we address this question presenting NOWHERE, an open agent communication infrastructure which facilitates the programming task in open distributed multi-agentsystems.

An automatic guided vehicle (AGV) transportation system is a fully automated system that provides logistic services in an industrial environment such as a warehouse or a factory. Traditionally, the AGVs that execute the transportation tasks are controlled by a central server via wireless communication. In a joint effort between Egemin, an industrial manufacturer of AGV transportation systems, and DistriNet Labs research at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, we developed an innovative decentralized architecture for controlling AGVs. The driving motivations behind decentralizing the control of AGVs were new and future quality requirements such as flexibility and openness. At the software architectural level, the AGV control system is structured as a multi-agent system;the detailed design and implementation is object-oriented. In this paper, we report our experiences with developing the agent-based control system for AGVs. Starting from system requirements, we give an overview of the software architecture and we zoom in on a number of concrete functionalities. We reflect on our experiences and report lessons learned from applying multi-agentsystems for real-world AGV control.
