Discrete element simulation of fracture surface damage and gouge particle evolution in a rock fracture segment

The surface damage and evolution of gouge materials in rock fractures or faults undergoing shear can change fracture properties in terms of shear strength and dilation,fluid transmissivity and retardation for *** order to conceptually understand fracture surface damage and gouge behaviors in fracture voids,the particle mechanics models were used to simulate the process of gouge particle plowed off from fracture asperities and subsequently their evolution in a fracture segment undergoing *** results show that significant abrasion and damage occurred by wearing the contact asperities and cracking the fracture surfaces. Gouge particles behave in two different ways under low and high normal stresses,*** low normal stress,gouge particles mainly roll with the moving fracture walls,with little surface *** high normal stress,gouge particles can be crushed into a few major pieces and a large number of minor comminuted particles, accompanied by more severe damage(abrasion and micro-cracking).

According to the analysis, there are five types of deformation failure of the slopes along the road which are shallow freeze-thaw creeping of gravel soil slopes in plateau meadow area, cracking of soft rock high slopes by weathering and freeze-thaw cycling, freeze-thaw slump along the planes of consequent rock slopes, freeze-thaw collapse of big colluvial gravel slopes and freeze-thaw slide along basal rock of residual gravel soil slopes. Grassing, water draining, SNS flexible protection net, concrete insert repair, anchored retaining wall or concrete pier, root pile and anti-sliding pile are selected to treat these deformation failures based on different situation. © 2013 Taylor & Francis Group.

High resolution rock characterization by 3D tunnel seismic reflection

ONKALO is the underground rock characterisation built for the final disposal of spent nuclear fuel at Olkiluoto, Finland. Geology, geophysics, hydro-geology, geochemistry and rock mechanics contribute to bedrock studies conducted during repository construction to ensure the suitability of the bedrock for the final disposal. A high-resolution 3D reflection seismic imaging survey was conducted in 2009 at a depth of app. 350 m. Lines 240 m long were measured, with source stations spaced at 1 m and receivers at 3 m, respectively. Measurements were conducted withahydraulic impact source that was usedonthe tunnel wall and floor. Fractures were imaged couple of hundred meters away from the tunnel. The location of the target features was achieved by using 3-component receivers, two parallel source lines and 3D vector migration schemes. IP (Image Point) migration was found particularly useful for imaging narrow and roughly planar features of diverse orientations. © 2013 Taylor & Francis Group.

Apart from the design methodology required for excavation and support, common for all types of tunnels, the specific methodology for design of water pressure tunnels is presented. From definition of the objectives of the design, the necessary data to obtain from investigations are listed. Prevention of hydrojacking, management of seepage and knowledge of the specific characteristics of the rock masses where the tunnel is to be excavated will dictate the layout, as well as support/lining or treatment to be applied for the different sections of the works. Emphasis is put on proper application of the different methods, empirical, analytical and numerical, for achievement of a safe design, with the help of some case stories.

Harmonizing engineering geology with rock engineering on stability of rock slopes

Progresses in understanding, analysis and control of rock slope movements have been the result of interdisciplinary efforts involving engineering geologists and rock engineers. In addition to rock engineering methodologies, the input from engineering geology is absolutely a fundamental to any rock slope design. This paper aims to emphasize the importance of harmonizing engineering geology with rock engineering on stability of rock slopes. Main engineering geological factors featured in the design and construction of rock slopes, role of engineering geological model and their combination with the stability analysis methods used in rock slope engineering are briefly discussed with their advantages and limitations, and finally current and near future needs related to stability of rock slopes are also described.

This paper discusses the purposes of, and the processes involved in, the several types of technical audit and/or review of aspects of rock engineering projects carried out in an international consulting practice. The reviews discussed relate to the investigation, design and construction of surface and underground rock engineering projects in the civil engineering, mining and energy resource industries. Eleven categories of review carried out in the authors' consulting practice are identified and discussed. Some, but not all, of these types of review are similar to the technical audits detailed by Hudson & Feng (2010) and Feng & Hudson (2011) as part of the work of the isrm's Commission on rock engineering design Methodology. Case examples are given of the authors' recent experience in carrying out three of the 11 types of rock engineering review identified.

Natural stone, already millions of years old when quarried and manipulated for our own needs, would appear to be impervious to decay. It is important to treat natural stone surfaces with care using appropriate treatment methods. In the literature, there are many different methods of stone surface treatment in order to improve the aesthetic appearance of the surface of the marble slab or tile or to increase the roughness. A new concept, water jet treatment, currently used by the sector and have more popularity than traditional methods. Water jet technology enables to obtain a surface with required roughness while preserving aesthetic appearance of the stone;however, this technology overcomes some disadvantages such as low productivity and high processing costs. Water jet treatment has been investigated in terms of surface quality, and the effects of working conditions on surface quality. The aim of this study is to determine the optimum working conditions of water jet surface treatment by using statistical and geostatistical methods. Laboratory and geostatistical studies have been carried out on Sardinia basalt samples under the conditions of different work distance, pump pressure and rate of progression. © 2013 Taylor & Francis Group.

A review of rock engineering Systems (RES) applications over the last 20 years

A critical aspect of rock engineering modelling and rock engineering design is ensuring that all the necessary variables have been included and that the interactions between them are understood-but this is not easy to establish without a guiding methodology. For this reason, the author developed the rock engineering Systems (RES) approach in 1992 and, in the 20+ years since then, the RES approach has been used for a wide variety of rock engineering and other problems. As a result, there are now many case studies available which illustrate the application of RES to rock engineering problems. In this paper, the basic RES methodology is outlined and 34 case examples are referenced. The diversity of these 34 case examples illustrates the variety of applications and approaches used by different researchers and practitioners. The link between RES and 'intelligent' methods is emphasised.
