This paper discusses the purposes of,and the processes involved in,the several types of technical audit and/or review of aspects of rock engineering projects carried out in an international consulting practice. The reviews discussed relate to the investigation,design and construction of surface and underground rock engineering projects in the civil engineering,mining and energy resource *** categories of review carried out in the authors' consulting practice are identified and ***,but not all,of these types of review are similar to the technical audits detailed by Hudson & Feng(2010) and Feng & Hudson(2011) as part of the work of the isrm's Commission on rock engineering design *** examples are given of the authors' recent experience in carrying out three of the 11 types of rock engineering review identified.

Highway slope safety risk evaluation methods are established which based on geological hazard risk evaluation methodology. Safety risk evaluation for Taishangou tunnel entrance slope of Shiyan to Baihe highway is studied. Monte Carlo simulation is used to get the stability of the slope probability of failure under the conditions of normal operation and abnormal conditions. And the vulnerability for the part of slope within the affected areas is analyzed. Possible economic loss and population casualties are obtained through the risk calculation formula. The results show that: Taishangou tunnel entrance slope is less risk in the normal conditions;but slope is higher risk in non-normal conditions, management measures must be taken to reduce risk and to strengthen monitoring, particularly to strengthen the monitoring of slope deformation in the construction process and adverse natural conditions. The result is provided guidance for slope protection and safe operation of Shiyan to Baihe highway.

Coupling relation between damage-induced permeability evolution and accelerated creep deformation of volcanic breccias

Following the previous work about the relation between permeability evolution and rock creep deformation [1-2], triaxial creep tests of volcanic breccias under various seepage pressures were performed on rock specimens and their lateral deformation behavior in the accelerated creep phase volcanic breccias were also studied. Creep damage variable and related evolution equation in accelerated creep were proposed. Based on the relation of damage variable associated with lateral creep strain, the correlativity between axial permeability coefficient and lateral damage-induced strain under different confining pressures was analyzed, and then the relation equation of permeability coefficient as a function of damage-induced strain during the process of accelerated creep was obtained. An assumption was made that the axial permeability coefficient has close relationship not only with lateral creep strain, but also with creep damage-induced crack growth. The equation can be applied for for numerical analysis of coupling seepage and stress during the process of rock creep damage.

The deformation modulus of rock mass is an important parameter for the design of underground structures and *** this study,3 new equations with statistical analyses were developed for estimation of rock mass deformation modulus using a database of 47 plate loads,86 dilatometers and 9 flat jack tests in Bakhtiary Dam Project in ***,by data processing and the statistical analyses,the best new equation was suggested for the estimation of deformation modulus in Bakhtiary Dam.

rockburst risk analysis based on microseismic monitoring in deep-buried tunnel with TBM excavation

Tunnel boring machine (TBM) should face high rockburst risk directly in deep-buried tunnel in hard rock. Real-time microseismic monitoring on rockburst risk analysis is carried out during TBM construction in the #3 diversion tunnel of Jinping II Hydropower Station. The correlation between rockburst and microseismic activity is researched. The results show that: (1) The spatial distribution of rockburst and microseismic activity has a good correlation with each other that both are characterized with regional concentration and all moderate and strong rockburst occurred in areas of concentrated microseismic activity. (2) It is better to analyze rockburst risk based on multiple seismic parameters. (3) Comprehensive parameter seismic Schmidt number can be well used for rockburst risk analysis in deep-buried tunnel with TBM excavation. Therefore, microseismic activity spatial distribution, multiple seismic parameters and seismic Schmidt number can be used together for rockburst risk analysis in deep-buried tunnel with TBM excavation.

Experimental study of the acoustic emission characteristics of salt rock under uniaxial compression

Acoustic emission characteristics and law of halite and thenardite under uniaxial cyclic loading and unloading are studied by using TYJ 600 rock mechanics testing system controlled by the microcomputer, electro-hydraulic servo control and SDAES digital acoustic emission instrument. The results show that acoustic emission count rate and energy rate are small for two kinds of samples in the initial state during uniaxial compression;in the elastic deformation stage, increase of AE counts is stable and little for halite and thenardite, respectively;in the plastic deformation stage, halite AE count rate and energy rate are linear growth with time increasing, thenardite AE count rate and energy rate increase rapidly;at the peak strength, halite and thenardite AE count rate and energy rate reach the maximum at the same time;after the peak strength, there are still AE counts and a few AE in the unloading period under cyclic loading and unloading. Before stress load to last unloading stress in the loading period, thenardite acoustic emission also exist, which is different from the typical "Kaiser Effect". Under monotonous and cyclic loading and unloading, halite and thenardite AE count rate and energy rate are consistent, either count rate or energy rate can be served as criteria of precursor of rock failure for these rocks.

Stability analysis for toppling failure of unstable rock in Three Gorges reservoir area, China

As distinguished from the former types of toppling failure (i.e. flexural, blocky, blocky-flexural and secondary), another type of toppling failure developed in interbedded hard rock and soft rock slope is very common in Three Gorges Reservoir region. Based on discrete element method, the failure process of toppling failure can be summarized as erosion notches. tension cracks. toppling failure. gravitational transport and accumulation. According to the toppling failure mode, the computing formula of factor of safety is deduced by means of the method of geo-mechanics. The results of a typical case study show that the factor of safety of toppling failure decreases with increasing of notch depth. Supposing the erosion rate of notches is 1 mm/yr and toppling failure of the unstable rock occurs at a notch depth of 1.45 m, we can calculate the time required for the unstable rock to topple as 50 years.

Conventional equipments for rock fall monitoring require a repair of the system after detection of rock fall events since falling rocks give them *** overcome such shortcoming,a new system using photoelectric sensors was developed in this *** technique allows the system to be functioned without any repair since the sensors can detect a rock fall without any contact with *** of this system was checked out through various tests both in a laboratory and in a *** test results showed that the system was effectively applicable to detecting rock fall events and useful for gathering and analyzing various technical data. It is also capable for roughly estimating the size or moving direction of rocks through comparing digital images captured by a camera.
