Sublevel mining methods are very popular in Canadian metal mines, which enable maximum recovery due to pillar-less mining. Ore is recovered by backfilling stopes and mining pillars after curing of backfilled stopes. Backfill material must be engineered to avoid backfill failure leading to dilution of precious ore. Current practice of designing backfill includes only gravity loading (static) on backfill. In reality, backfill is loaded by static and dynamic loads during extraction of adjacent pillars. The static load is due to weight of the backfill and dynamic loading is due to blasting and sudden loss of confinement. It is believed that dynamic loading on backfill must have an influence on backfill stability. This paper presents FLAC(3D) modelling results of static loading due to gravity and dynamic loading on backfill due to loss of confinement and blasting. The CRF stope is subjected to blast vibrations. The numerical modelling results are compared with the cavity monitoring survey (CMS) profiles of a case study thus validating the modelling technique.

rock failure progressive processes in static tests and dynamic impact tests are modelled using a hybrid finite-discrete element method. The simulated results are then compared with these recorded in literatures to calibrate the hybrid method. After that, the hybrid finite-discrete element method is applied to model rock excavation in mechanical cutting. Throughout this study, it is concluded that the hybrid finite-discrete element method is superior to the continuum-based finite element method and the discontinuum-based discrete element method in terms of modelling rock failure progressive process and resultant fragment flow, and may be a valuable numerical tool for optimizing the design of rock cutting and drilling equipments.

Numerical analysis of stability of underground excavation using stress release method

For an analysis of the stability of an underground excavation in two dimensional space, the convergence-confinement tunnel design process is usually applied to investigate the interaction of support and ground of the excavation. In order to achieve the design process, a coefficient of stress release is defined. The stress release process is realized using a numerical software UDEC, which is validated by the closed-form solution of a circular tunnel. The stability of a cavern in rockmass is analyzed based on the convergence-confinement method using UDEC. The displacement around the cavern is investigated. The numerical results show that the magnitude of displacement depends on the stress release, i.e., the installation of support.

Determination of the deformation behaviour of salt rock by evaluation of convergence measurements in shafts

Convergence measurements are an essential part of monitoring methods in underground openings. They also provide important information about the mechanical behaviour of the rock mass in the framework of site exploration. In shafts a more accurate estimation of the deformation behaviour of the rock mass is possible because of the symmetric geometry and their location within the shaft safety pillar. Results of convergence measurements with their evaluation and interpretation are presented through the example of two shafts in salt rock, considering the geological situations. As expected, an increase of convergence with depth can be observed generally. Also a significant dependency of the deformation behaviour on the stratigraphic age of the rock layers is obvious. More information can be obtained by calculating the absolute displacements of the convergence measuring point. This practice enables the identification of special geological situations with their influences on deformation size and deformation direction.

Study on rock mechanical properties and the correlation of the mechanical parameters of Liuzuo Copper Mine

By the experimental study on the physical and mechanical properties of typical rock in the Liuzuo Copper Mine, the base physical parameter and main mechanical parameters such as elasticity modulus, poisson's ratio, compressive strength and shear strength parameters is put forward in this paper. Research analyzes the uniaxial compressive strength influenced by moisture content, the triaxial compressive strength and the elasticity modulus influenced by confining stress. Moreover the optimal correlativity of the compressive and elasticity modulus is obtained through analyzing the curve fitting. The research results can provide basic data for the study on mining numerical analysis, the stope structure optimization, also the correlativity of the compressive and elasticity modulus can provide reference when there isn't enough data.

Slope stability of final highwall slope at West Bokaro Collieries, India

The paper deals with geotechnical study for the final slope of 140 m high final open pit mine slope at SE Block of West Bokaro Collieries, Tata Steel. It is mainly characterized by sandstone and coal. The bulk density and direct shear tests were conducted at rock Mechanics Laboratory of CIMFR on the samples collected from the field. The geotechnical mapping was done on the exposed benches of the quarry as per the norms of International Society of rock Mechanics (isrm 1978). The kinematic analysis was done to determine the critical orientation of structural discontinuities. After identifying kinematically possible failure modes, detailed slope stability analysis was carried out by GALENA software based on limit equilibrium method. The present study reveals that the 140 m high final slope could be designed with 47 degree overall slope angle. The sensitivity analysis shows that the influence of water is also alarming. It was recommended that the slope should be kept in drained geomining condition by providing suitable drainage and keeping drainage effectively maintained.

Based on Investigation and Statistics of joint surface in field, as well as indoor triaxial unloading experiment and structural plane direct shear, designed several different connectivity rate and different dip angle joint rock mass models, using the discrete element software FLAC3D to simulate triaxial unloading experiment. According to indoor triaxial unloading test and simulation results, figure out the joint sandstone's mechanics parameters under conditions of unloading, studied the influence law which in different connectivity rate and dip angle of the joint influence on rock mechanics parameters at the conditions of triaxial unloading. And on the basis of the above, it amends the relevant parameters of high and steep slope in YINBAZI material yard, JINPING-I hydropower Station. The result can provide references to similar project as geotechnical engineering design and construction et al.

The present papers deals with in situ characterization of rock formations as per Schmidt Rebound Hammer classification values (R) and portrays a model for spatial susceptibility of landslides in mountainous terrain. A geotechnical classification of rock masses depending on the range of R-value has been proposed and a regional correlation with the structural features traversing in the area has been attempted. Rebound values have been utilized to estimate the geo-mechanical properties of in-situ rock to categorize the different lithological assemblages into geotechnical units of varying competencies. Geotechnical units assigned weightings of slope parameters, structure and bedding relations, land use and land cover etc and the terrain has been categorized into susceptibility classes such as very low, low, moderate, high and very high depending on the spatial probability of landslide occurrence highlighting relative severity of landslide hazard.

Mining has been moving towards large-scale, innovative and efficient mining methods, such as mega-pits with steep slopes and large and deep underground mines using block and panel caving methods. This author has had the good fortune to participate and witness the maturing of the rock Mechanics and Geotechnical engineering in theory and practice in the Australian mining industry through studying and working there since 1986, as a researcher and a practitioner. Geotechnical inputs to both design and operation are critical to the success and efficiency as the materials involved in such undertakings, rock, soil, and water, are ever more complicated and uncertain despite the best effort to characterise them. Today, all Australian mining operations, large or small, have a resident rock mechanics or geotechncial engineer on site;and all mining projects have specialist rock mechanics/geotechnical engineers on staff as an integral part of the overall study team. This paper attempts to discuss the practical aspects of geotechncial engineering in mining project design and operation. Through actual cases, the critical roles played by geotechncial engineering are highlighted for mining operations and projects, in particular the three critical goals in a mining project: feasibility, constructability and operability.

Study of deformation and strength properties of the carbonaceous phyllite under natural and saturated condition

Taking the carbonaceous phyllite as investigative subject, which is the weak layer widely distributed in Yunfu pyrite, Guangdong province, the deformation characteristics and strength properties of the carbonaceous phyllite rock mass are analyzed through laboratory uniaxial and triaxial compression tests. Based on the tests on natural and saturated carbonaceous phyllite, the elastic constitutive equations of the carbonaceous phyllite, considering the closing of micro cracks, are established;and the deformation characteristics and strength properties of water-weakening influence is analyzed. Through the tests, the deformation characteristics and strength properties of the carbonaceous phyllite are further understood, which can give some advices to the design of rock slope containing weak layers of the carbonaceous phyllite.
