The new algorithm of obtaining shear strength of rock mass based on nonlinear equation proposed by E. Hoek and its application to engineering

The principle of nonlinear equation proposed by E. Hoek is elaborated, then based on that, new algorithm of obtaining shear strength of rock mass is brought forward by considering the overall or average level when rock mass is broken. Through the new algorithm, the magnitudes of shear stress can be calculated at different given normal stress, generating a series of shear stress and normal stress, and the values of cohesion and friction were determined via linear regression analysis. Then take the research on shear strength of rock mass from China-Myanmar Oil and Gas Pipelines (Domestic Section) Lancang River across domain engineering as an example. It is shown that the values of cohesion and friction according to the new algorithm are consistent with these gained through the Hoek-Brown criterion fitting algorithm. Further comparison study also presents the new algorithm's rationality. The results will provide an important guide for engineering design and construction.

Google SketchUp is a kind of 3D modeling software which directly faces the creative design process, with the advantages of easy to use and strong function. 3D modeling is always the hotspot and nodes in dangerous rock masses disaster research on the basis of characteristics of the geotechnical engineering. This paper firstly introduces the train of method about 3D modeling of dangerous rock masses using SketchUp;and then an example of T8 to T12 fracture sections at Lianzi Cliff is given to introduce 3D modeling processes of SketchUp;at last, the realistic 3D model of dangerous rock masses is showed. The conclusion shows that constructing 3D modeling of dangerous rock masses using SketchUp is an ideal method.

Natural rocks often contain a large number of microfissures that have great effect on the deformation, strength and failure mechanism of rocks. The engineering construction will change the stress magnitude and stress state, thus causing microfissure to propagate until a macroscopic failure plane is formed. In order to study the strength properties of such microfissure rocks, and provide basic data for investigating the water inflow and mud burst mechanism of tunnel excavated in microfissure-well-developed rocks, a series of triaxial compression tests under different loading path are carried out on rock specimens drilled from rhyolite blocks taken from the site of Daxiangling Niba mountain tunnel. The strength and deformation properties of microfissure rock are obtained;the influences of factors such as the initial angle of the microfissure and morphology on the strength and deformation-failure of microfissure rock are analyzed.

In this paper, risk assessment methodology is applied to quantify the impact of uncertainties in the tunnel lining design. Uncertainties and variability concerning geologic conditions, structural parameters and lining loads evaluation are addressed. Firstly, risk mitigation measures used in the design phase are presented to produce reliable design solutions, including a combined procedure used for assessing geological uncertainties, the displacement releasing factor method used to consider the 3-D effect of excavation face and the probabilistic method used to consider the variability of structural parameters. For risk estimation, the failure probability and the corresponding losses for each design solution need to be calculated. An improved Convergence-Confinement method (CCM) is proposed for evaluating its stability. Together with the improved CCM method, the probabilistic approach based on Monte-Carlo is adopted to calculate the failure probability. Overall losses due to lining failure is evaluated with the Analytical Hierarchy Process.

Yield-Line Theory (YLT) has been in wide spread use since the 1960's. YLT allows determining of the upper-bound bending resistance of reinforced concrete slabs using the concept of virtual work. YLT can be used for two purposes in the design of sprayed concrete support: the determination of quality assurance demands for the sprayed concrete or in the design of adequate sprayed concrete layer thickness against a bending failure. The square slab energy absorption test (EN 14488-5) and the round panel flexural toughness test (ASTM C1550-12a) are used. Solutions for both tests are given and conversion equations are derived. Testing results produced during normal quality assurance testing process in Lansimetro project (Finland) are shown for comparison. Finally, the merits and draw-backs of the test types are discussed.

Review of rock stability analysis using discontinuous deformation analysis (DDA)

Since 1990s, researchers in the discontinuous deformation analysis (DDA) community have dedicated a great deal of effort on the stability analysis of slopes, tunnels and caverns. This paper contains a summary of more than 80 published papers or theses concerning stability analysis using DDA. These studies are grouped into the following two categories: (a) validations with respect to analytical solutions, laboratory experiment results or field data;and (b) applications of rock stability analysis using DDA. After reviewing the validations and variety applications, we are focusing on discussing recent issue in this research filed: limitations and solutions concerning cohesive-friction in DDA stability analysis. Addressed by this review, we find that DDA can perform more than adequately in stability analysis for a variety of engineering problems. In addition, we present a general solution for modeling rock masses behaviors with cohesive-friction joints.

Research on stress state in slopes subjected to tectonic stress during valley incision by geomechanical modelling

Taking the Longmenshan complex geological environment as the study background, a geomechanical model with a reverse fault and subjected to horizontal tectonic stress is built and valley incision process is modeled. After excavation, the right slope has the contrary dip to faults but on the left slope the dip is similar to faults. Valley side slope presents tensile stress and the valley floor presents compressive stress. During valley incision the right slope display tensile stress state and its stress distribution show different characteristics of zonation from surface to inside of the slopes. As the valley incision depth increases, the position of tensile stress concentration area in right slope has changed from inside to surface, and lastly to the top of overlying fault. Stress state of left slope is complex and mainly performs tensile stress, but it also shows different characteristics in upper and lower slope.

Energy analysis of rock deformation and failure under uniaxial compression after high temperature

Mechanical characteristics and energy properties of granite under uniaxial compression after high temperature have been researched. The results show that energy conversion during rock deformation and failure is a dynamic process, and it can be mainly divided into four subprocesses: energy input, energy accumulation, energy dissipation and energy release. Thermal damage defined by elastic modulus increases generally but has volatility, which can be fitted into cubic curve. rock strength shows inverse ratio to dissipated energy and proportional ratio to elastic energy, energy dissipation makes the material deteriorate and its strength drop down eventually. Acoustic emission energy rate shows proportional ratio to elastic energy and inverse ratio to dissipated energy, the elastic energy released in rock volume plays the pivotal role of abrupt structural failure of rock. It is emphasized that the failure of rock is a process in which energy dissipation and energy release occur simultaneously.

Role of borehole transverse notching on hydraulic fracturing in hard rock

The roof composed of hard and thick strata cannot cave in time with advance of working face in underground coal mining, which leads to extensive overhanging or unsupported areas in the gob and strong loading on supports in working face and entries. A successful technique for hard roof control is recognized as directional hydraulic fracturing through creating directional fractures in roof to weaken its integrity. A comprehensive investigation into stress distribution around borehole and fracture propagation patterns was carried out in this paper through theoretical analysis, numerical modeling and field test. Finite element code ABAQUS was employed for the analysis of stress distribution at transverse notching tip and effect of transverse notching on fracturing initiation condition and orientations, which was verified further by the field test. Transverse notching plays an important role on borehole sealing, fracturing propagation in large scope and fracturing at freewill section in boreholes.

A geomechanical comparison between a naturally fractured rock mass and its DFN equivalent based on FEMDEM simulation

This paper presents a comparison between natural and stochastic fracture systems in terms of their geomechanical response to in-situ stresses. An analogue fracture network (AFN) is extracted from the geological map of a limestone outcrop. A corresponding discrete fracture network (DFN) is generated using the statistics obtained from the analogue pattern, to ensure the two networks share the same statistical characteristics. The geomechanical response is modelled using the combined finite-discrete element method (FEMDEM). A series of numerical experiments is designed with far-field stresses applied at a range of angles to the rock domain. A comparison between the natural fracture system and its DFN equivalent is made based on phenomena such as fracture-dependent stress heterogeneity, re-activation of pre-existing fractures, new crack propagation and variability of aperture distribution. This study addressed the validity of using the DFN approach for geomechanical modelling of fractured rock masses and also has implications for flow simulations.
