The function mode of influencing factors and recognition method for the loose zone of largespan tunnels which are built in heavily jointed rock stratum are very important. Factors like the thickness of overlying weak rock stratum, tunnel depth and joints occurrences are influencing factors that need careful consideration. By using orthogonal array testing and distinct element method, a case of large-span metro station cavern on conditions of no support is taken, based on UDEC software, 64 different numerical simulation models of which the cross section share same form and size are two-dimensionally simulated. A new method based on joints occurrences is presented to determine the boundary of loose zone. The influencing rules of factors are summarized and new formulae for the area of loose zone and length of earth surface crack are formulated by using the liner least squares method. The errors of the empirical formulae are analyzed.

Theoretical analysis of anomalously low friction effect in deep block media mass

Under the condition of deep mining, anomalously low friction effect in deep block rock mass is related with dynamic disaster in deep rock mass. Based on practical situation of deep mines in China, the model of deep block rock mass considering overlying rock mass pressure was established. The analytical expression of relationship between block kinetic function and displacement-time function was derived with rock depth h parameter. The maximum rate of load drop is 1.06 x 105 N/s when anomalously low friction effect generate at -800 m coal and rock mass, and the wave periodicity of normal load in rock mass is 0.1 s. The results show that with the wave of normal load in rock mass, relatively blocks compacting drive to weaken. The anomalously low friction effect is easy to trigger. The rate of load drop sharply increase, and it can also be one of the characteristic index of anomalously low friction effect in rock mass.

Many accidents may occur during tunnel construction because the strata ahead of the working face are not clear;therefore the advanced percussive drilling surveying method is proposed which is one direct convenient, fast and inexpensive geological forecast method. The prediction of strata property is usually qualitative and not quantitive. In this paper, based on one type of percussive drill and much drilling data in field and rock mechanical test in the laboratory, the relationship between drilling rate and rock mechanical parameters is established. These parameters consist of rock compressive strength, density, cohesion force and internal friction angle. According to the rock classification standard, drilling data and real rock mass basic quality index (abbreviation BQ), the relationship between the drilling rate and BQ is also established, and the classification table of engineering rock mass by percussive drilling rate is obtained. Based on these conclusions, the quantitative prediction of strata property can be realized. And this work will be helpful in changing tunnel design, reducing construction cost, increasing progress and preventing accidents.

Based on the geological conditions, underground mining situations, as well as the status of cracks and surface deformation of Chengchao Iron, a cantilever mechanical model is proposed. The bottom-up tubular collapse in the deep rock mass causes the horizontal tectonic stress release which favors the bending fracture deformation and destruction of the NWW-trending joints. This model can explain the formation of four zones in the deep rock mass: rupture zone, the transition zone of rupture to deformation, the deformation zone, and the undisturbed zone. In such a mode, it inevitably leads to different deformation areas on the surface related to the different zones in the deep rock mass. So the mine surface is divided into four related areas: cumulative deformation area, crack-producing area, crack-extending area, and crack-closing area. As mining progresses, four zones of the deep rock mass will gradually extend downward, while four areas of the surface deformation will gradually expand outward.

Test and numerical simulation study of limestone crack seepage-stress coupling with high seepage pressure

Firstly got the rock specimens with intrinsic fracture, then carried out seepage tests with high seepage pressure (>1 MPa), in order to study the seepage regulation with different seepage pressures and confining pressures. The result stated that the relation between coefficient of permeability and net confining pressure is according to exponential relation. With the same net confining pressure, the coefficient of permeability increases according to the seepage increasing. The loading-unloading tests stated that the crack which experienced higher confining pressure and higher seepage pressure, the seepage speed increases at the second loading, that should be resulted from the structural surface damage. Based on theory of seepage-stress coupling and developed fish language of FLAC(3D), carried out the numerical simulation according to the test condition, the numerical results are coincident with test. Also analyzed JCR influent for seepage velocity, provided reference for further comprehension for the mechanism of rock crack seepage stress coupling.

Research on stochastic model and stability analysis of soil-rock mixture slope based on sort judgment

Soil-rock mixture is different from conventional soil and rock materials. Inhomogeneity is an obvious feature of soil-rock mixture and the material component is one of intrinsic factors to influence the stability of soil-rock mixture slope. Mathematical intervals are defined for sort judgment basing on material component of soil-rock mixture. For each unit, sort judgment is dealt with by Monte Carlo method, and the corresponding value of the physico-mechanical parameter is given to unit of sort units. By this means, material component proportions of numerical model are equal to that of real states of soil-rock mixture slope. Stability analysis of soil-rock mixture slope is taken by the strength reduction method and the influence of material components contents on stability of soil-rock mixture slope is researched by numerical experimentations. The results indicate that it is unsafety to calculate the factor of safety by use of homogeneous slope model.

Analytical solutions are often not available due to the complexity of engineering conditions. Circular tunnels are special cases which have analytical solutions and can be used for preliminary analysis of underground excavations and to guide the design. It is more logical to regard the properties or input data of geomaterials as random variables rather than constant values because of their uncertainties. In this paper reliability analysis of a circular tunnel in elastic-strain-softening rock mass subjected to a hydrostatic in situ stress field is conducted. Computational procedures for the response surface method and first-order reliability methods (RSM/FORM) are used in the reliability analyses of the elastic-strain-softening model. System reliability-based design of support pressure to achieve an overall target reliability index is carried out. The positive correlation between the compressive strength and the elastic modulus, are also investigated.

New model of permeability of two-solid constituent shale gas rock

The stress and pore pressure dependence of permeability of shale gas rock is considered for the case of two-solid constituents porous medium. It is done for a generalized model of composite sphere phases each of them being gas/fluid saturated. It is shown that the total mean stress in each of the phases is different from the confining stress even for homogeneous state. This leads to a more complicated dependence of permeability rather than that of Terzaghi effective stress, i.e. confining stress minus pore pressure as in the case of one-solid constituent porous medium. Additional dependence of permeability on pore pressure is captured by taking into account Knudsen and slip flow contributions. Because depletion-induced variation of pore pressure leads to variation of eigen-strain, the resultant strain and stress exerted at the reservoir by surrounding country rock is found by using Eshelby-type inclusion model. The depletion-induced evolution of reservoir permeability is expressed as a function of pore pressure.

The characteristic of deep rock joints affects the mechanical behavior of rock mass in underground rock engineering, especially underground oil storage caverns. Borehole Television (BHTV) is used to investigate lithology and deep rock joints characteristic, which is dip direction, aperture and roughness, in the largest underground oil storage caverns in China. Based on the geometry relationship between inclined borehole and joints, the dip angle and dip direction has been identified by 3 points' depth and orientation, and the real aperture has been figured out by depth and orientation of 2 points of the joints trace in the BHTV image. A sinusoid ruler was proposed to measure the fluctuating quantity of the joints in images, and projected the oval roughness of borehole wall to straight line. The joints roughness was estimated by Joint Roughness Coefficient (JRC) through the relationship of Fractal Dimension and Barton's 10 standard profiles.

Understanding the behavior of brittle rocks under different stress conditions is extremely important to the design and construction of underground projects such as mines, tunnels and underground hydropower stations. At the University of Hong Kong, both laboratory tests and numerical simulation were carried out to study the behavior of typical Hong Kong rocks. For the laboratory tests, the deformation properties (expressed by stress-strain curve) and failure process of granite under compression and tension were investigated. In addition, the evolution of dilatancy and time-dependent strength degradation of granite under constant loading were studied. AE technique was used to study the development of fracture during these tests. For the numerical simulations, the discrete element method was adopted to carry out numerical tests to simulate the laboratory tests. A same set of tests were carried out in the numerical simulations using the discrete element method (DEM). The present paper, which focuses on granite, reports and compares the results of the laboratory tests and the numerical simulations.
