the interplay between signal processing and wireless networking plays a crucial role in sensor networks deployed for detection and estimation applications. In this paper, an opportunistic power assignment strategy for IR-UWB sensor networks is presented which is designed to optimize detection performance in terms of the global probability of error. the opportunistic power assignment strategy utilizes both the detection error probabilities of individual sensors as well as network topology information, leading to significant performance gains compared to uniform power assignment.

this paper addresses the problems of the blind channel identification and signal extraction in a linear mixture of bounded complex sources. We present a blind criterion that solves these two related problems by confining a linear component of the observations into a convex-hull of minimum volume. the proposed criterion has its minima only at identification of the subspace of one of the unmixed components of the observations, allowing, therefore, a robust channel identification and signal recovery.

the paper introduces and provides a simple proof of an interesting matrix inversion identity involving subspaces. Using this identity, new insights and interpretations are provided about beam space-based adaptive beamformers and the generalized sidelobe canceller. In addition, system performance measures and losses in terms of the achievable SINR and deflection coefficient can be interpreted and predicted in beam space using the framework of subspaces.

this paper is concerned with the problem of antenna array calibration in a non-stationary signal environment. In detail, this study focuses on calibration of the antenna array geometry by employing properties of the differential geometry of the array manifold vector. the proposed algorithm is totally blind, since the only available information to the array system is the received signal emitted by a moving source of unknown characteristics. the only assumption made is that the movement of the source has an angular component and that the position of one sensor with regards to the reference point is known. It is shown through Monte Carlo simulations that this method significantly improves the ability of the array system to estimate characteristics of the moving source, such as its direction of arrival (DOA), in addition to reducing the positioning errors of the array elements.

We consider a calibration problem, where we determine an unknown sensor location using the known track of a calibration target and a known reference sensor location. We cast the calibration problem as a sparse approximation problem where the unknown sensor location is determined over a discrete spatial grid with respect to the reference sensor. To achieve the calibration objective, low dimensional random projections of the sensor data are passed to the reference sensor, which significantly reduces the inter-sensor communication bandwidth. the unknown sensor location is then determined by solving an l{sub}1-norm minimization problem (linear program). Field data results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach.

In this paper, we derive a closed form necessary and sufficient condition under which rank r multichannel beamforming achieves the capacity of a single user spatially correlated Rayleigh fading channel which employs multiple transmit antennas and a single receive antenna. It is assumed that the receiver has perfect channel side information (CSIR) while the transmitter only knows the channel distribution (CDIT). Additionally, a set of r independent closed form equation is derived that gives the r non-zero eigenvalues of transmit covariance associated to transmit power along each mode.

this paper proposes an enhancement and evaluates the performance of a recently proposed method for joint extraction of pitch and direction of arrival for speaker localization. We propose a new weighting function in order to suppress the cross-terms of the aforementioned method. the performance of the method is evaluated by measuring the correct estimate of position at a frame level. this evaluation analyzes the limits of the method at different background noise levels by using real world recordings. the results show that the proposed algorithm gives more consistent location estimates leading to a reduction in angular deviation by 4.23°at -3 dB SNR.

A permutation problem arises in the case of locating multiple speech sources using several sensor arrays in the far field. the intersection of different direction of arrival (DOA) estimates between sensor arrays leads to a set of real source locations as well as a set of false intersections. this paper presents a novel method for pairing DOA estimates from different sensor arrays, resulting in the corresponding real intersection points. the algorithm presented is numerically efficient and suitable for real time implementations. Real room recordings are used to evaluate the method.

We address the problem of sparse planar array design. Based on the theory of minimum redundancy arrays, we recently proposed an iterative algorithm that is capable to design highly thinned arrays with a low side-lobe level while retaining the half-power-beam-width of uniform arrays. In this paper, we analyze the effect of kernel bandwidth and compare the approach to a recent paper by Kopilovich which is based on the family of Hadamard difference sets. the results show that the proposed method achieves similar performance with a substantially lower amount of array elements. Side-Lobe-Levels are comparable to the ones from uniform arrays and only slightly higher than for Hadamard-based arrays.

Subspace estimation is of importance to high-resolution direction estimation in array processing. In this paper, a new recursive least-squares (RLS) algorithm is proposed for null space estimation, which is used to estimate or track the directions of coherent and/or incoherent signals impinging on a uniform linear array (ULA). Especially by investigating the expectation computation of an inverse matrix, the statistical analysis of the RLS algorithm is studied in the mean and mean-squares senses in stationary environment, and further the mean-square-error (MSE) and mean-square derivation (MSD) learning curves are derived explicitly. the theoretical analyses and effectiveness of the proposed RLS algorithm are substantiated through numerical examples.
