the article presents information on selected papers from the 18thbraziliansymposium on computergraphics and imageprocessing Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. the paper 'A Randomized Approach for Patch-based Texture Synthesis Using Wavelets' by Leandro Tonietto, Marcelo Walter and Claudio R. Jung, discusses a wavelet-based approach for selecting blocks in patch-based texture synthesis. the second paper was 'GEncode: Geometry-driven Compression for General Meshes' by thomas Lewiner and colleagues.

this paper presents a novel image-based approach to render plausible soft shadows for complex dynamic scenes with rectangular light sources. the algorithm's performance is mostly independent of the scene complexity and the source's size. Occluders and receivers do not need to be separated and no knowledge about the scene representation is required, making the method easy to use. the main idea is to approximate the occlusion in the scene with pre-filtered occlusion textures. the visibility of the light source at a point in space is estimated by accumulating the occlusion caused by each texture, using a novel formula based on probabilities.

Region-based approaches to cel painting typically use shape similarity and topology relations between regions of consecutive animation frames. this paper presents a new colorization algorithm based on topological differences defined over a hierarchical graph of adjacent regions, which allows an almost full automatic colorization process. Also this paper discusses other attributes that improve the solution of the image association problem.

In this paper we present a novel method for estimating the effective number of independent variables in imaging applications that require multiple hypothesis testing. the method increases the statistical power of the results by refuting the assumption of independence among variables, while keeping the probability of false positives low. It is based on the spectral graph theory, in which the variables are seen as the vertices of a complete undirected graph and the correlation matrix as the adjacency matrix that weights its edges. By computing the eigenvalues of the correlation matrix, it is possible to obtain valuable information about the dependence levels among the variables of the problem. the method is compared to other available models and its effectiveness illustrated in a case study on the morphology of the human corpus callosum.

Expression Transfer is a method for mapping a photographed expression performed by a given subject onto the photograph of another person's face. Building on well succeeded previous works by the vision researchers (facial expression decomposition, active appearance models and multilinear analysis, we propose a novel approach for expression transfer based on color images. We attack this problem with methods developed by the computer vision community for facial expression analysis and recognition. Combining active appearance models and multilinear analysis, it's possible to suitably represent and analyze expressive facial images, while separating both style (subject's identity) and content (expressive flavor) from the captured performance.

this paper makes a rereading of two successful image segmentation approaches, the fuzzy connectedness (FC) and the watershed (WS) approaches, by analyzing both by means of the image Foresting Transform (IFT). this graph-based transform provides a sound framework for analyzing and implementing these methods. this paradigm allows to show the duality existing between the WS by IFT and the FC segmentation approaches. Both can be modeled by an optimal forest computation in a dual form (maximization of the similarities or minimization of the dissimilarities), the main difference being the input parameters: the weights associated to each arc of the graph representing the image. In the WS approach, such weights are based on the (possibly filtered) image gradient values whereas they are based on much more complex affinity values in the FC theory. An efficient algorithm for both FC and IFT-WS computation is proposed. Segmentation robustness issue is also discussed.

Scale dependent signal representations have proved to be useful in several imageprocessing applications. In this paper we define a toggle operator for binarization/segmentation purposes based on scaled versions of an image transformed by morphological operations. the toggle decision rule, determining the new value of a pixel, considers local spatial information, in contrast to other multiscale approaches that takes into account mainly global information (e.g., the scale signal under study). We show that the proposed operator can identify significant image extrema information in such a way that when it is used in a binarization process yields very good segmentation and filtering results. Our algorithm is validated against known threshold-based segmentation methods using images of different classes and subjected to different lighting conditions.

this work introduces a new compression scheme for point sets. this scheme relies on an adaptive binary space partition (BSP) which takes into account the geometric structure of the point set. this choice introduces geometrical rather than combinatorial information in the compression scheme. In order to effectively improve the final compression ratio, this partition is encoded in a progressive manner decreasing the number of bits used for the quantisation at each subdivision. this strategy distributes the extra cost of the geometry encoding onto the maximal number of points, compressing in average 15% more than previous techniques.

We present the assessment of two classification procedures using a Monte Carlo experience and Landsat data. Classification performance is hard to assess with generality due to the huge number of variables involved. In this case we consider the problem of classifying multispectral optical imagery with pointwise Gaussian Maximum Likelihood and contextual ICM (Iterated Conditional Modes), with and without errors in the training stage. Using simulation the ground truth is known and, therefore, precise comparisons are possible. the contextual approach proved being superior than the pointwise one, at the expense of requiring more computational resources, with both real and simulated data. Quantitative and qualitative results are discussed.

the single triangle-strip loop generation algorithm on a triangulated two-manifold presented by Gopi and Eppstein [4] is based on the guaranteed existence of a perfect matching in its dual graph. However such a perfect matching is not guaranteed in the dual graph of triangulated manifolds with boundaries. In this paper we present algorithms that suitably modify the results of the dual graph matching to generate a single strip loop on manifolds with boundaries. Further the algorithm presented in [4] can produce only strip loops, but not linear strips. We present an algorithm that does topological surgery to construct linear strips, with user-specified start and end triangles, on manifolds with or without boundaries. the main contributions of this paper include graph algorithms to handle unmatched triangles, reduction of the number of Steiner vertices introduced to create strip loops, and finally a novel method to generate single linear strips with arbitrary start and end positions.
