High parallelism degree is fundamental for high speed image processing systems. Modern FPGA devices can provide such parallelism plus flexibility. Temporal partitioning techniques can be used to implement large systems, splitting them into partitions (called contexts), multiplexed in a FPGA. this approach can increase the effective FPGA area, allowing high parallelism in the application tasks. However, the context reconfigurations can cause performance decrease. Intensive parallelism exploration of massive image data application compensates this overhead and can improve global performance. In this work, one reconfigurable computer platform and design space exploration techniques are proposed for mapping of image processing applications into FPGA slices. A library with different hardware implementation for different parallelism degree is used to better adjust space/time for each task. Experiments demonstrate the efficiency of the approach when compared to the optimal mapping reached by exhaustive timing search in the complete design space exploration. Copyright 2006 ACM.

Wearable visual sensors provide views of the environment which are rich in information about the wearer's location, interactions and intentions. In the wearable domain, hand gesture recognition is the natural replacement for keyboard input. We describe a framework combining a coarse-to-fine method for shape detection and a 3D tracking method that can identify pointing gestures and estimate their direction. the low computational complexity of both methods allows a real-time implementation that is applied to estimate the user's focus of attention and to control fast redirections of gaze of a wearable active camera. Experiments have demonstrated a level of robustness of this system in long and noisy image sequences

physically based deformable models have been widely embraced by the computer graphics community. Many problems outlined in a previous survey by Gibson and Mirtich have been addressed, thereby making these models interesting and useful for both offline and real-time applications, such as motion pictures and video games. In this paper, we present the most significant contributions of the past decade, which produce such impressive and perceivably realistic animations and simulations: finite element/difference/volume methods, mass-spring systems, mesh-free methods, coupled particle systems and reduced deformable models-based on modal analysis. For completeness, we also make a connection to the simulation of other continua, such as fluids, gases and melting objects. Since time integration is inherent to all simulated phenomena, the general notion of time discretization is treated separately, while specifics are left to the respective models. Finally, we discuss areas of application, such as elastoplastic deformation and fracture, cloth and hair animation, virtual surgery simulation, interactive entertainment and fluid/smoke animation, and also suggest areas for future research.

image segmentation using tree pruning (TP) and watershed (WS) has been presented in the framework of the image forest transform (IFT) - a method to reduce image processing problems related to connectivity into an optimum-path forest problem in a graph. Given that both algorithms use the IFT with similar parameters, they usually produce similar segmentation results. However, they rely on different properties of the IFT which make TP more robust than WS for automatic segmentation tasks. We propose and demonstrate an important improvement in the TP algorithm, clarify the differences between TP and WS, and provide their comparative analysis from the theoretical and practical points of view. the experiments involve automatic segmentation of license plates in a database with 990 images

the single triangle-strip loop generation algorithm on a triangulated two-manifold presented by Gopi and Eppstein (2004) is based on the guaranteed existence of a perfect matching in its dual graph. However, such a perfect matching is not guaranteed in the dual graph of triangulated manifolds with boundaries. In this paper, we present algorithms that suitably modify the results of the dual graph matching to generate a single strip loop on manifolds with boundaries. Further, the algorithm presented by Gopi and Eppstein (2004) can produce only strip loops, but not linear strips. We present an algorithm that does topological surgery to construct linear strips, with user-specified start and end triangles, on manifolds with or without boundaries. the main contributions of this paper include graph algorithms to handle unmatched triangles, reduction of the number of Steiner vertices introduced to create strip loops, and finally a novel method to generate single linear strips with arbitrary start and end positions

this paper addresses the problem of foreground extraction using active illumination and graph-cut optimization. Our approach starts by detecting image regions that are likely to belong to foreground objects. these regions are constituted by pixels where the difference in luminance for two differently illuminated images is large. the foreground objects are segmented by graph-cut optimization using those regions as a seed and using a energy function based on probability distributions derived from both input images and their difference. Several light sources and different illumination schemes can be used to mark the foreground. Our method has only two scalar parameters which can be set once for a wide variety of scenes

Particle filtering has become a standard tool for non-parametric estimation in computer vision tracking applications. It is an instance of stochastic search. Each particle represents a possible state of the system. Higher concentration of particles at any given region of the search space implies higher probabilities. One of its major drawbacks is the exponential growth in the number of particles for increasing dimensions in the search space. We present a graph based filtering framework for hierarchical model tracking that is capable of substantially alleviate this issue. the method relies on dividing the search space in subspaces that can be estimated separately. Low correlated subspaces may be estimated with parallel, or serial, filters and have their probability distributions combined by a special aggregator filter. We describe a new algorithm to extract parameter groups, which define the subspaces, from the system model. We validate our method with different graph structures within a simple hand tracking experiment with both synthetic and real data

this paper describes different approaches of realtime GMM (Gaussian mixture method) background subtraction algorithm using video sequences for hand image segmentation. In each captured image, the segmentation takes place where pixels belonging to the hands are separated from the background based on background extraction and skin-color segmentation. A time-adaptive mixture of Gaussians is used to model the distribution of each pixel color value. For an input image, every new pixel value is checked, deciding if it matches with one of the existing Gaussians based on the distance from the mean in terms of the standard deviation. the best matching distribution parameters are updated and its weight is increased. It is assumed that the values of the background pixels have low variance and large weight. these matched pixels, considered as foreground, are compared based on skin color thresholds. the hands position and other attributes are tracked by frame. that enables us to distinguish the hand movement from the background and other objects in movement, as well as to extract the information from the movement for dynamic hand gesture recognition

In this paper, we propose different criteria for detecting unusual motion in surveillance cameras. Initially, a certain environment is observed within a time interval, and captured trajectories are used as examples of usual trajectories. these trajectories are used to build a spatial occupancy map (SpOM, which is introduced in this paper) of the observed people, as well as main flow directions. In the test period, each new trajectory is classified as normal or unusual with respect to spatial occupancy and trajectory consistency. the spatial occupancy criterion considers the relation of space occupancy between the new tracked trajectory and the observed period. the trajectory consistency criterion considers the agreement of the new trajectory with the main flows extracted in the training period. Experimental results showed that these criteria can be used as an automatic pre-screening of suspect motion in surveillance applications
