The radar data to form synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery is normally transmitted and received by moving platforms like aircraft or vehicles. In many situations, the platforms move at high speed;which reduces the number of sampling records collected to the synthetic aperture, hence degrades the quality of the reconstructed SAR images. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an algorithm that is capable of increasing the temporal frequency rate of the received data. In this paper, we propose a novel technique to generate intermediate records from the existing ones by a locally-adaptive low-rank matrix recovery framework. The system first fills in the blank records using a bi-directional motion estimation scheme. The initialized aperture records are then refined by a robust low-rank matrix completion algorithm using the reference from neighborhood clean records. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed method provides comparative results when up-converting the aperture rate by a factor of two or four, both in mean square error of the raw SAR signal and PSNR performance of the recovered SAR images.

For synthetic aperture imaging of through-wall-radar, the multi-path propagation between target and walls introduces the ghosts into the formed image. This paper proposes a new algorithm for suppressing these multi-path ghosts. A multi-path model in an enclosed building is first developed. By analyzing the model, we obtain an important feature of the multi-path ghosts to be defined as aspect dependence. Then, based on the aspect dependence, we introduce the sub-aperture imaging to suppress the ghosts. Simulation results show that the proposed method reduce the ghosts as well as increase the signal-to-clutter ratio of image.

Coherent Change Detection (CCD) is a powerful technique for detecting fine scene changes between two synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images taken at different times. SAR CCD imagery can detect ground disturbances that are invisible in optical or traditional SAR imagery, such as footprints or vehicle tracks [1]. One particular problem with the extreme sensitivity of CCD is the presence of false alarms (clutter) introduced by phenomena such as low SNR (esp. radar shadows) and vegetation [2]. We present two methods to improve the sensitivity of the detector while reducing the amount of false-alarms. The first uses a generalized likelihood ratio test for change detection which incorporates noise explicitly in its models. The second combines two CCD images, generated from three SAR passes of the same area, to cancel out false alarm regions and show only changes from man-made activities of interest, such as vehicle tracks. We show results from each algorithm on real data, and find that the algorithms are effective at reducing the amount of false alarms while increasing the sensitivity of our detector.

In recent years, the use of Polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) data in different applications dramatically has been increased. In SAR imagery an interference phenomenon with random behavior exists which is called speckle noise. The interpretation of data encounters some troubles due to the presence of speckle which can be considered as a multiplicative noise affecting all coherent imaging systems. Indeed, speckle degrade radiometric resolution of PolSAR images, therefore it is needful to perform speckle filtering on the SAR data type. Markov Random Field (MRF) has proven to be a powerful method for drawing out eliciting contextual information from remotely sensed images. In the present paper, a probability density function (PDF), which is fitted well with the PolSAR data based on the goodness-of-fit test, is first obtained for the pixel-wise analysis. Then the contextual smoothing is achieved with the MRF method. This novel speckle reduction method combines an advanced statistical distribution with spatial contextual information for PolSAR data. These two parts of information are combined based on weighted summation of pixel-wise and contextual models. This approach not only preserves edge information in the images, but also improves signal-to-noise ratio of the results. The method maintains the mean value of original signal in the homogenous areas and preserves the edges of features in the heterogeneous regions. Experiments on real medium resolution ALOS data from Tehran, and also high resolution full polarimetric SAR data over the Oberpfaffenhofen test-site in Germany, demonstrate the effectiveness of the algorithm compared with well-known despeckling methods.

The paper presents the concept of the use of CLEAN processing for strong direct signal removal in passive SAR systems. The CLEAN algorithm proposed has been successfully verified during several measurement campaigns. During the trials the passive SAR receiver was placed at ground level, and different SAR satellites (e.g. EnviSAT, TerraSAR-X) were used as illuminators of opportunity. Almost all SAR radars use the chirp sounding signal, and the presence of a direct signal in the reference channel limits the quality of the image. The removal of the strong direct signal leads to improvement of the image at a short distance from the receiver, which is the case considered in this paper.

This paper proposes a hierarchical Bayesian model for multiple-pass, multiple antenna synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems with the goal of adaptive change detection. We model the SAR phenomenology directly, including antenna and spatial dependencies, speckle and specular noise, and stationary clutter. We extend previous work(1) by estimating the antenna covariance matrix directly, leading to improved performance in high clutter regions. The proposed SAR model is also shown to be easily generalizable when additional prior information is available, such as locations of roads/intersections or smoothness priors on the target motion. The performance of our posterior inference algorithm is analyzed over a large set of measured SAR imagery. It is shown that the proposed algorithm provides competitive or better results to common change detection algorithms with additional benefits such as few tuning parameters and a characterization of the posterior distribution.

Automatic target detection (ATD) methods for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery are sensitive to image resolution, target size, clutter complexity, and speckle noise level. However, a robust ATD method needs to be less sensitive to the above factors. In this study, a constant false alarm rate (CFAR) based method is proposed which can perform target detection independent of image resolution and target size even in heterogeneous background clutter. The proposed method is computationally efficient since clutter statistics are calculated only for candidate target regions and a single execution of the method is sufficient for different types of targets having different shapes and sizes. Computational efficiency is further increased by parallelizing the algorithm using OpenMP and Nvidia CUDA implementations.

In this paper we apply a sparse signal recovery technique for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image formation from interrupted phase history data. Timeline constraints imposed on multi-function modern radars result in interrupted SAR data collection, which in turn leads to corrupted imagery that degrades reliable change detection. In this paper we extrapolate the missing data by applying the basis pursuit denoising algorithm (BPDN) in the image formation step, effectively, modeling the SAR scene as sparse. We investigate the effects of regular and random interruptions on the SAR point spread function (PSF), as well as on the quality of both coherent (CCD) and non-coherent (NCCD) change detection. We contrast the sparse reconstruction to the matched filter (MF) method, implemented via Fourier processing with missing data set to zero. To illustrate the capabilities of the gap-filling sparse reconstruction algorithm, we evaluate change detection performance using a pair of images from the GOTCHA data set.

Monostatic synthetic aperture radar (SAR) Coherent Change Detection (CCD) has been found to be of great utility in detecting changes that occur on the ground. Detectable changes of interest include vehicle tracks and water flow. The CCD procedure involves performing repeat pass radar collections, to form a coherence product, where ground disturbances can induce detectable incoherence. However there is usually a difference in the radar collection geometry which can lead to incoherent energy noise entering the CCD, which reduces the detectability of tracks. When sensing flat terrain, the incoherence due to collection geometry difference can be removed through a straightforward Fourier image support trimming process. However, it has been found that when the terrain contains non-flat topography, the optimal trimming process is substantially more involved, so much so that a new per-pixel SAR back-projection imaging algorithm has been developed. This algorithm trims off incoherent energy on a per-pixel basis according to the local topography [1]. In order to validate the bistatic SAR generalization to the monostatic per-pixel formalism and algorithm, bistatic change detection measurements were conducted with the GB-SAR system, and these are reported here.

We have employed the Arecibo Observatory Planetary radar (AO) transmitter and the Mini-RF radar onboard NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) as a receiver to collect bistatic data of the lunar surface. In this paper, we demonstrate the ability to form bistatic polarimetric imagery with spatial resolution on the order of 50m, and to create polarimetric maps that could potentially reveal the presence of ice in lunar permanently shadowed craters. We discuss the details of the signal processing techniques that are required to allow these products to be formed.
