Conventional target recognition approaches for SAR include template matching and feature-based classification. However, unlike visual imagery, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) presents a unique challenge in that many attributes, such as scattering centers, are extremely pose dependent and wink in and out with even minor viewing geometry changes. This work implements a highly efficient biologically-inspired 3D template-based approach, the Map Seeking Circuit (MSC) algorithm, for target recognition in SAR. Instead of exhaustively searching a high dimensional state space, the MSC algorithm efficiently searches a superposition hypersurface to estimate target location and 3D pose. Results are shown from applying the algorithm to real SAR datasets.

In this paper, an inversion scheme for turntable inverse synthetic aperture rader (ISAR) data is derived for both two and three dimensions from a scalar wave equation model. The proposed data inversion scheme motivates the use of a filtered back projection (FBP) imaging algorithm. The paper provides a derivation of the the general imaging filter needed for FBP, which will be shown to reduce to a familiar result for near-field ISAR imaging.

synthetic aperture radar (SAR) often suffers from interference signal from various radio sources. In general, notch filters or band elimination filters have been utilized to eliminate such interference signal;however, if the bandwidth of the interference signal is relatively wide, the gap in the spectrum caused by the band elimination filter could significantly degrade the original image. We propose an algorithm to suppress relatively wide bandwidth interference while maintaining the image quality. In the algorithm, spatially variant interference suppression filter is generated based on the signal of interference free band, then the filter is applied to the interference contaminated image. Unlike the band elimination filter, the spatially variant interference suppression filter preserves the signal component within the interference contaminated band;therefore, the image distortion caused by the spectrum gap can be largely eliminated. The algorithm has been tested with a simulated interference contaminated image generated from the real 10cm resolution airborne Ku band SAR image and a TerraSAR-X image. It has been shown that while conventional band elimination filter would degrade the image quality, the image quality of the interference suppressed image obtained by the proposed algorithm is satisfactory.

We utilize eight circular passes of measured airborne X-Band radar data to form a novel reflectivity surface estimate. Our previous work demonstrated reflectivity surface estimation from narrow aperture multi-pass data and this work extends those results to wide apertures. Narrow aperture surface estimates are co-registered in the three spatial dimensions and combined non-coherently to form a wide-aperture data product. For the purpose of visually conveying the scene reflectivity content a surface is formed from the wide angle data product. The subject of this work is not on the optimality of the methods nor the global convexity of the cost functions. Instead, these results give us one of the first glimpses at measured wide angle three dimensional SAR image products and provide a qualitative benchmark against which to measure future wide angle three dimensional synthetic aperture radar autofocus and imaging algorithms.

It is not currently known if it is possible to accurately form a synthetic aperture radar image from N data points in provable near-linear complexity, where accuracy is defined as the l(2) error between the full O(N-2) backprojection image and the approximate image. To bridge this gap, we present a backprojection algorithm with complexity O(log(1/c) N log N), with c the tunable pixelwise accuracy. It is based on the butterfly scheme, which works for vastly more general oscillatory integrals than the discrete Fourier transform. Unlike previous methods this algorithm allows the user to directly choose the amount of acceptable image error based on a well-defined metric. Additionally, the algorithm does not invoke the far-field approximation or place restrictions on the antenna flight path, nor does it impose the frequency-independent beampattern approximation required by time-domain backprojection techniques.

Researchers at the U. S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) designed and fabricated the Synchronous Impulse REconstruction (SIRE) radar system in an effort to address fundamental questions about the utilization of low frequency, ultrawideband (UWB) radar. The SIRE system includes a receive array comprising 16 receive channels, and it is capable of operating in either a forward-looking or a side-looking mode. When operated in side-looking mode, it is capable of producing high-resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. The SAR imaging algorithms, however, initially operated under the assumption that the vehicle followed a nearly linear trajectory throughout the data collection. Under this assumption, the introduction of vehicle path nonlinearities distorted the processed SAR imagery. In an effort to mitigate these effects, we first incorporated segmentation routines to eliminate highly non-linear portions of the path. We then enhanced the image formation algorithm, enabling it to process data collected from a non-linear vehicle trajectory. We describe the incorporated segmentation approaches and compare the imagery created before and after their incorporation. Next, we describe the modified image formation algorithm and present examples of output imagery produced by it. Finally, we compare imagery produced by the initial segmentation algorithm to imagery produced by the modified image-formation algorithm, highlighting the effects of segmentation parameter variation on the final SAR image.

This work investigates the fixed-point polarimetric whitening filter (FP-PWF) with respect to ship detection based on polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery. The purposes of this work are: (i) to investigate the FP-PWF algorithm that incorporate texture, (ii) to examine the method of log-cumulants (MoLC) for shape parameter estimation associated with texture, and (iii) to assess the impact of the improved modeling and estimation on the discrepancy between specified and observed false alarm rate. A modified ship detection algorithm based on FP-PWF is proposed with improved modeling, estimation and detection performance. Experiments are performed on simulated radar ocean clutter.

The phase perturbations due to propagation effects can destroy the high resolution imagery of synthetic aperture Imaging Ladar (SAIL). Some autofocus algorithms for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) were developed and implemented. Phase Gradient algorithm (PGA) is a well-known one for its robustness and wide application, and Phase Curvature algorithm (PCA) as a similar algorithm expands its applied field to strip map mode. In this paper the autofocus algorithms utilized in optical frequency domain are proposed, including optical PGA and PCA respectively implemented in spotlight and strip map mode. Firstly, the mathematical flows of optical PGA and PCA in SAIL are derived. The simulations model of the airborne SAIL is established, and the compensation simulations of the synthetic aperture laser images corrupted by the random errors, linear phase errors and quadratic phase errors are executed. The compensation effect and the cycle index of the simulation are discussed. The simulation results show that both the two optical autofocus algorithms are effective while the optical PGA outperforms the optical PCA, which keeps consistency with the theory.

The synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has been proven to be a valuable tool for high resolution ocean surface wind measurements, which is especially important for coastal waters. However, oceanic surface phenomena observed by SAR and oceanic processes which can cause the change of backscatter in SAR imagery will influence the SAR wind retrieval. Upwelling is one of the main factors and it is prevalent in summer along the Zhejiang Coast. It smoothes the sea surface which results in the lower backscatter cross section in SAR imagery. In this article, using sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll2-a data derived from EOS MODIS, the low backscatter features in ENvISAT ASAR imagery are analyzed along the Zhejiang Coast in the East China Sea. And then CMOD4 algorithm is adopted to retrieve the sea surface wind speed, using wind directions from interpolated NCEP / NCAR reanalysis data. The result of wind speed is negatively biased due to the low Normalized radar Cross Section (NRCS) associated with the Zhejiang Coastal Upwelling. In order to resolve impact of the coastal upwelling on SAR wind retrieval, combining high resolution numerical meteorological model wind field data, a wind speed correction model is proposed using linear robust regression. Results show that the accuracy of SAR wind retrieval is improved in upwelling region.

In this paper we show the ability of well known in synthetic aperture radar applications Phase Gradient Autofocus to recover defocused Optical Coherence Tomography images and achieve lateral resolution about 5 um at wide depth range. High-resolution details could be recovered from far-from-focal plane (defocused) regions. Both numerical simulations and experiment have been performed to demonstrate the ability of the method.
