Many Automatic target recognition systems work by matching test profiles against profile templates from various parts of the targets. These templates are generally constructed for uniform-width sub-targets constructed out of the targets being considered. In this paper we present a heuristic search based algorithm for constructing optimal-sized sub-targets which mag. be of varying widths. We show the improvements that are obtained by constructing templates for sub-targets identified by the search algorithm. The reduction in Mean Square errors is reported and also the performance of two classification test runs.

The NASA sponsored Search and Rescue synthetic aperture radar (SAR(2)) program seeks to use foliage penetrating synthetic aperture radar (SAR) to locate light plane crashes in remote areas. In addition to the hardware and pattern recognition issues, data management is recognized as a significant part of the overall problem A single NASA/JPL AIRSAR polarimetric image in P, L, and C bands takes approximately 524 megabytes of storage. algorithmic development efforts, as well as an eventual operational system, will likely require maintaining a large database of SAR imagery, as well as derived features and associated geographical information. The need for this much data is driven in large part by the complexity of the detection problem. A simple classification/detection algorithm does not currently seem feasible. Rather, a data driven approach that can incorporate local background characteristics as well as geographical information seems to be called for. This in turn makes data management a key issue. This paper presents a comprehensive data management framework suitable for the 'SAR(2) problem, as well as other similar massive data set management problems.

For the problem of finding downed aircraft in forested areas, the NASA Search and Rescue Project has developed a system based on using fully polarimetric L-Band and P-Band synthetic, Apreture radar (SAR). Because of the resolution of the sensor and the size of the target, single-look imagery must be used. The problem of focusing the SAR imagery is a difficult one, especially at P-Band. An approach has been implemented with considerable success, based on a variant of the Phase Gradient Autofocus algorithm, which provides the higher-order-than-quadratic phase correction needed.

To detect and identify targets in their natural environment, millimeterwave sensors are appropriate tools for a variety of civilian and military applications. To generate high resolution images the synthetic aperture approach is the favourite method also for the millimeterwave bands. These wavelengths allow some simplifications in the algorithms to be applied, namely the image distortions due to range migration and depth of focus can be neglected. The short aperture time which is reduced by the factor of the wavelength for an equal cross range resolution, leads to a much lesser influence of flight instabilities of the airborne platform, than have to be taken into account for classical microwave SAR. It is also remarkable that the amount of speckle is considerably reduced for the higher millimeterwave-bands which allows single-look processing. The polarimetric, high resolution experimental radar MEMPHIS (Millimeterwave Experimental Multifrequency Polarimetric High Resolution Imaging System) with simultaneous operating front-ends at 35 GHz and 94 GHz has been installed onboard a cargo aircraft in side looking configuration. Different scenes over land and sea were passed with this system and the data were processed by means of a SAR algorithm. The paper describes the system configuration and the SAR processing algorithm, gives representative results for the generated radar images and compares the results at 35 and 94 GHz.

This paper proposes using a backpropagation (BP) neural network for the classification of ship targets in airborne synthetic aperture radar (SXR) imagery. The ship targets consisted of 2 destroyers, 2 cruisers, 2 aircraft carriers a frigate and a supply ship. A SAR image simulator was employed to generate a training set, a validation set, and a test set for the BP classifier. The features required for classification were extracted from the SAR imagery using three different methods. The first method used a reduced resolution version of the whole SAR image as input to the BP classifier using simple averaging. The other two methods used the SAR image range profile either before or after a local-statistics noise filtering algorithm for speckle reduction. Performance on an extensive test set demonstrated the performance and computational advantages of applying the neural classification approach to targets in airborne SAR imagery. Improvements due to the use of multi-resolution features were also observed.

The study of urban area is an important problem in image interpretation. It is interesting to be able to analyse town development on satellite images or to mask urban areas automatically. The method we present in this paper consists in the extraction of urban areas from remote sensing images and the classification of these areas. We separate the urban areas from the other types of regions (vegetation, rivers...). Then we classify them according to a measure of the urban density. The algorithms we use, combine different types of operators in order to improve the final classification.

Wavefront curvature defocus effects can occur in spotlight- mode SAR imagery when reconstructed via the well-known polar formatting algorithm under certain scenarios that include imaging at close range, use of very low center frequency, and/or imaging of very large scenes. The range migration algorithm, also known as seismic migration, was developed to accommodate these wavefront curvature effects. However, the along-track upsampling of the phase history data required of the original version of range migration can in certain instances represent a major computational burden. A more recent version of migration processing, the frequency domain replication and downsampling (FReD) algorithm, obviates the need to upsample, and is accordingly more efficient. In this paper we demonstrate that the combination of traditional polar formatting with appropriate space-variant post- filtering for refocus can be as efficient or even more efficient than FReD under some imaging conditions, as demonstrated by the computer-simulated results in this paper. The post-filter can be pre-calculated from a theoretical derivation of the curvature effect. The conclusion is that the new polar formatting with post filtering algorithm should be considered as a viable candidate for a spotight-mode image formation processor when curvature effects are present.

Constant False Alarm Rate (CFAR) detection in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is the first step in most ATR and image exploitation systems. In this paper several CFAR algorithms and their implementation on a 1-D SIMD array processor are investigated. We primarily focus on CFAR algorithms using the Weibull clutter model, but algorithms assuming K-distributed clutter should have similar implementations and runtimes. We show that high resolution SAR requires reference windows much larger than those used in traditional search radars, which permits fast moment based estimation instead of the computationally intensive maximum likelihood parameter estimates. We also extend a fast median filtering algorithm to the order statistic and censored CFAR algorithms. The running times of the CFAR algorithms are listed along with detection results using SAR imagery from the Northrop-Grumman TESAR sensor onboard the Predator unmanned aerial vehicle.

In this paper we present a new algorithm for segmenting SAR images. A common problem with segmentation algorithms for SAR imagery is the poor placement of the edges of regions and hence of the regions themselves. This usually arises because the algorithm considers only a limited number of placements for regions. The new algorithm circumvents this shortcoming, and produces an optimal segmentation into a prescribed number of regions. An objective function is derived from a statistical model of SAR imagery. This objective function is then minimised by the method of simulated annealing which is, assuming some weak constraints, guaranteed to give the global minimum. Starting with an initial segmentation, the algorithm proceeds by randomly changing the current state. The annealing then decides whether or not to accept the new configuration by calculating the difference between the likelihoods of the data fitting these segmentations. In practise there are many possible implementations of the algorithm. We describe an implementation which uses a free topological model and alters the segmentation on a pixel by pixel basis. This makes it possible to get results of high resolution, as shown in results obtained by applying the new algorithm to both airborne X-band and ERS1 imagery.

Ship traffic surveillance plays an important role in providing safety of shipping, traffic management as well as treating a great deal of related environmental problems. One of the quite new but promising possibilities for this purpose lies in using satellite-borne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery. A moving ship produces a set of waves (ship wakes) often appearing in the image as bright or dark linear structures. These structures can provide information on both ship direction and speed. Ln the work presented here, the possibility of automatic detection of ship wakes was tested by applying the Radon transformation to the area surrounding the ship, followed by a verification of each detected wake by a set of criteria to discern it from other wake-like linear structures which are very often appearing in SAR imagery. Different methods for the improvement of the original image are applied as a preprocessing technique for the Radon transformation. The success of the algorithm implementation was found to depend greatly upon both wake and image appearances. The band-pass filtering together with a non-linear image amplification proved to be of use for the detection of practically invisible wakes.
