We present an efficient and computationally simple approach for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging in cases when the radar data have gaps, due to missing pulses and/or notches in the frequency band. Our method is a simple variation of gradient projection, in which the search path in each iteration is obtained by projecting the negative-gradient of the L1 norm onto a hyper-plane defining solutions which are consistent with the data. The computations are not complicated since the L1 gradient is simply equal to the sign() of the pixels in the image. Computational efficiency is obtained by incorporating the polar format algorithm, which accomplishes the projection operation using a fast Fourier transform. Sample results are presented using the AFRL Gotcha 2006 radar data set and the Space Dynamics Laboratory FlexSAR system.

We have developed an algorithm for segmenting fully polarimetric single look TerraSAR-X, multilook SIR-C and 7 band Landsat 5 imagery using neural nets. The algorithm uses a feedforward neural net with one hidden layer to segment different surface classes. The weights are refined through an iterative filtering process characteristic of a relaxation process. Features selected from studies of fully polarimetric complex single look TerraSAR-X data and multilook SIR-C data are used as input to the net. The seven bands from Landsat 5 data are used as input for the Landsat neural net. The Cloude-Pottier incoherent decomposition is used to investigate the physical basis of the polarimetric SAR data segmentation. The segmentation of a SIR-C ocean surface scene into four classes is presented. This segmentation algorithm could be a very useful tool for investigating complex polarimetric SAR phenomena.

Interest in the use of active electro-optical(EO) sensors for non-cooperative target identification has steadily increased as the quality and availability of EO sources and detectors have improved. A unique and recent innovation has been the development of an airborne synthetic aperture imaging capability at optical wavelengths. To effectively exploit this new data source for target identification, one must develop an understanding of target-sensor phenomenology at those wavelengths. Current high-frequency, asymptotic EM predictors are computationally intractable for such conditions, as their ray density is inversely proportional to wavelength. As a more efficient alternative, we have developed a geometric optics based simulation for synthetic aperture ladar that seeks to model the second order statistics of the diffuse scattering commonly found at those wavelengths but with much lesser ray density. Code has been developed, ported to high-performance computing environments, and tested on a variety of target models.

Reconstructing images from SAR returns is usually a time consuming task. In addition it is often desired to use as many returns as possible to achieve better image quality. However, the high computational resources demand by the conventional methods hinders the reconstruction process. In this article, we propose a simple method to reconstruct SAR image that is built upon the back-projection algorithm using multiple sub-aperture imagery to attain both greater processing efficiency and improved image quality. Instead of aggregating all the available pulses into one single image following the back-projection algorithm, our proposed method creates multiple SAR image reconstructions from a relatively small number of pulses to exploit variations in sub-aperture views of the scene. The heterogeneity among these sub-aperture views exhibits an exceptional difference between various objects and presents a reconstruction with much less noise. Our proposed method is evaluated with circular spotlight GOTCHA data sets and it demonstrates much improved computational performance and image quality compared to the conventional back-projection algorithm.

The amplitude and phase estimation (APES) algorithm is widely used in modern spectral analysis. Compared with conventional Fourier transform (FFT), APES results in lower sidelobes and narrower spectral peaks. However, in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging with large scene, without parallel computation, it is difficult to apply APES directly to super-resolution radar image processing due to its great amount of calculation. In this paper, a procedure is proposed to achieve target extraction and parallel computing of APES for super-resolution SAR imaging. Numerical experimental are carried out on Tesla K40C with 745 MHz GPU clock rate and 2880 CUDA cores. Results of SAR image with GPU parallel computing show that the parallel APES is remarkably more efficient than that of CPU-based with the same super-resolution.

Current techniques for building detection in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery can be computationally expensive and/or enforce stringent requirements for data acquisition. We present a technique that is effective and efficient at determining an approximate building location from multi-pass single-pol SAR imagery. This approximate location provides focus-of-attention to specific image regions for subsequent processing. The proposed technique assumes that for the desired image, a preprocessing algorithm has detected and labeled bright lines and shadows. Because we observe that buildings produce bright lines and shadows with predetermined relationships, our algorithm uses a graph clustering technique to find groups of bright lines and shadows that create a building. The nodes of the graph represent bright line and shadow regions, while the arcs represent the relationships between the bright lines and shadow. Constraints based on angle of depression and the relationship between connected bright lines and shadows are applied to remove unrelated arcs. Once the related bright lines and shadows are grouped, their locations are combined to provide an approximate building location. Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the outcome of this technique.

Due to its computational efficiency, the polar format algorithm (PFA) is considered by many to be the workhorse for airborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging. PFA is implemented in spatial Fourier space, also known as "K-space", which is a convenient domain for understanding SAR performance metrics, sampling requirements, etc. In this paper the mathematics behind PFA are explained and computed examples are presented, both using simulated data, and experimental airborne radar data from the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Gotcha Challenge collect. In addition, a simple graphical method is described that can be used to model and predict wavefront curvature artifacts in PFA imagery, which are due to the limited validity of the underlying far-field approximation. The appendix includes Matlab code for computing SAR images using PFA.

Simultaneously estimating position x and velocity v of moving targets using only the measured phase phi from single-channel SAR is impossible because the mapping from (x, v) to phi is many-to-one. This paper defines classes of equivalent target motion and solves the GMTI problem up to membership in an equivalence class using single-channel SAR phase data. Definitions are presented for endo-and exo-clutter that are consistent with the equivalence classes, and it is shown that most target motion can be detected, i.e. the set of endo-clutter targets is very small. We exploit the sparsity of moving targets in the scene to develop an algorithm to resolve target motion up to membership in an equivalence class, and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique using simulated data.

synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has an important contribution in monitoring ships in the littoral regions. This stems from the substantial information that SAR images have which can facilitate the ships detection operation. Coastline images produced by SAR suffer from many deficiencies which arise from the presence of speckles and strong signals returned from land and rough sea. The first step in many ship detection systems is to mark and reject the land in SAR images (land masking). This is performed to reduce the number of false alarms that might be introduced if the land is processed by ship detector. In this paper, two powerful methods for land masking are introduced. One is based on mathematical morphology while the other is based on Lee-Jurkevich coastline detection and mean estimator algorithm. From experimental results, the proposed methods give promising results for both strongly marking the land area in SAR images and efficiently preserving the details of coastlines as well.

Based on the fundamental scattering mechanisms of facetized computer-aided design (CAD) models, we are able to define expected contributions (EC) to the radar signature. The net result of this analysis is the prediction of the salient aspects and contributing vehicle morphology based on the aspect. Although this approach does not provide the fidelity of an asymptotic electromagnetic (EM) simulation, it does provide very fast estimates of the unique scattering that can be consumed by a signature exploitation algorithm. The speed of this approach is particularly relevant when considering the high dimensionality of target configuration variability due to articulating parts which are computationally burdensome to predict. The key scattering phenomena considered in this work are the specular response from a single bounce interaction with surfaces and dihedral response formed between the ground plane and vehicle. Results of this analysis are demonstrated for a set of civilian target models.
