Ethernet had been widely adopted as a layer 2 infrastructure in many fields due to its low cost, avaliabilty, scalability and comptabiblity with the ip protocol stack. control networks, automotive and avionics industries are some of the examples where Ethernet technology is currently used. In many of these industries, sending data in real-time is critical. However, Ethernet was not primarily designed to carry time-critical information. It used best-effort approach where no guarantees on the performance is provided. This led to the design of application-specific protocols in order to meet the timing constraints and gurantee network performance for real-time applications. In this paper a new protocol, Flexilink, is being evaluated as a proposed unified low latency infrastructure for industrial networks. A simulation model had been developed to evaluate Flexilink performance using Matlab. The paper also compares Flexilink performance to traditional Ethernet as well as priority-based Ethernet. Results show that Flexilink provides a stable performance for real-time traffic with minimum jitter even in overloaded networks which we believe makes Flexilink a promising technology to be used as an infrastructure in Ethernet industruial networks.

Router Access control Lists (ACLs) are a traditional way to filter traffic on cloud computing selectively. However, a large number of rules may be required, whereas the storage capacity of router Ternary Content Addressable Memories (TCAMs) is scarce and expensive. This paper proposes a Network Functions Virtualization (NFV)/Software-Defined Networking (SDN) security framework, named ACLFLOW. ACLFLOW (i) translates regular ACLs (source/destination ip, source/destination port, and protocol) into OpenFlow filtering rules;(ii) creates and manages large OpenFlow ACLs on distributed software switches, which act as security virtual network functions (named OpenFlow VNF-ACLs), to address the TCAM storage capacity problem;(iii) implements a proposed algorithm to dynamically prioritize the most popular rule to accelerate switching operations;and (iv) orchestrates and accelerates the deployment of NFV/SDN environments into production clouds. We have implemented a framework prototype into the Open Platform for NFV (OPNFV) and evaluated its performance using different tools and scenarios. Results show that OpenFlow VNF-ACL improves maximum throughput by up to 90%, its HTTP request rates are up to 50% better, and it reduces Round Trip Time (RTT) by 70% when its performance is compared with a stateless iptables running in virtual machines. Moreover, the proposed algorithm dynamically improves HTTP request rate of flows with the highest traffic volume by 15% and reduces RTT by 25% when compared with ACLFLOW without prioritization.

An evolvable, scalable, and resilient control channel for software defined wireless access networks

This paper presents a novel multipath communication-based OpenFlow channel for Software Defined Wireless Access networks (SDWANs), namely mOpenFlow. The advantageous features of mOpenFlow include the following: (i) resilience and scalability in wireless environments, (ii) evolvability of the existing access networks and the OpenFlow standard, (iii) a novel network calculus-based model for performance analysis of mOpenFlow. By lever-aging the multipath communication for conveying OpenFlow traffic, mOpenFlow enhances both robustness (i.e., resilience) and throughput (i.e., scalability) of the control channel. To achieve the evolvability, mOpenFlow adopts the multipath transport control protocol, which conforms to SDWANs and the OpenFlow standard. We evaluate mOpenFlow in an emulated SDWAN in relation to the standard channel. The results show that mOpenFlow outperforms the standard channel, both in terms of robustness and scalability. Additionally, the numerical results indicate that the model provides a fast and reliable way for analyzing the end-to-end delay on mOpenFlow. (C) 2016 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

One of the major challenges in the evolution of the Internet architecture is the defini- tion of a protocol architecture that allows to solve the following major issues in Internet routing and traffic forwarding capabilities: (i) keeping a routing state that is manageable with current and forthcoming computing infrastructure – i. e., with few millions of states; (ii) offering a scalable pull architecture in support of data-plane programmability; (iii) offering a scalable forwarding plane able to be regularly optimized with only active flows information; (iv) offering locator/identifier separation for advanced ip mobility; (v) is incrementally deployable; (vi) can enhance the support of over-the-top services. The Locator/Identifier Separation Protocol (LISP) has been identified as one of the rising protocols in this respect. In its current status, it supports the above mentioned requirements at a level that is acceptable for basic networking environments. However, it shows too limited capacities when it comes to take into consideration fault resiliency and capability to react fast to network state updates. These shortcomings can be compensated by enhancing the control-plane architecture, and the routing algorithms therein. In this dissertation, we propose new protocol features and experiment novel control-plane primi- tives, as well as hybrid distributed-centralized routing state dissemination algorithms, to scale with different network conditions. We first design and build own open source LISP data-plane and control plane node, comparing it with other implementations, showing how our implementation can scale for large networks and reach performances suitable for real deployments. We present how our implementation served to operate all network nodes (data-plane and control-plane nodes) of a large scale experimentation testbed, the LISP-Lab testbed. Open Network Database for Application-Based control in Multilayer networks

traffic engineering (TE) solutions are enabled by the adoption of the path computation element (PCE) architecture. Cooperative inter-PCE communications, in combination with TE information export mechanisms, such as the link state extensions to BGP protocol (BGP-LS) enable TE in heterogeneous networks scenarios with different layers, domains, and technologies. Multilayer networks, such as ip/MPLS over elastic optical networks are a typical example of such scenarios. However, these currently adopted export mechanisms are conceived for limited amount of exchanged information in order to preserve scalability, especially if centralized entities are considered, such as PCEs and controllers. Moreover, some information (e.g., router interfaces and transceiver card association) are not always available at the control plane level. Thus, so far limited deployment of interlayer TE procedures has been experienced. In this paper, we propose a novel network element called open network database. Exploiting the state-of-the-art of database platforms while assuring high scalability and reliability performance, dedicated control and management applications run complex reoptimization procedures with a set of ad hoc queries without relying on complex control infrastructure or without overloading the orchestrators, thus simplifying the implementation of network applications and achieving advanced TE. A YANG-based database for interconnected TE networks is proposed and implemented to enable dedicated applications to perform complex multidomain/layer operations. The database is successfully utilized for effective and extremely scalable maintenance applications in multilayer networks.

Performance Evaluation of IEEE 802.11ah networks With High-Throughput Bidirectional traffic

So far, existing sub-GHz wireless communication technologies focused on low-bandwidth, long-range communication with large numbers of constrained devices. Although these characteristics are fine for many Internet of Things (IoT) applications, more demanding application requirements could not be met and legacy Internet technologies such as Transmission control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/ip) could not be used. This has changed with the advent of the new IEEE 802.11ah Wi-Fi standard, which is much more suitable for reliable bidirectional communication and high-throughput applications over a wide area (up to 1 km). The standard offers great possibilities for network performance optimization through a number of physical-and link-layer configurable features. However, given that the optimal configuration parameters depend on traffic patterns, the standard does not dictate how to determine them. Such a large number of configuration options can lead to sub-optimal or even incorrect configurations. Therefore, we investigated how two key mechanisms, Restricted Access Window (RAW) grouping and traffic Indication Map (TIM) segmentation, influence scalability, throughput, latency and energy efficiency in the presence of bidirectional TCP/ip traffic. We considered both high-throughput video streaming traffic and large-scale reliable sensing traffic and investigated TCP behavior in both scenarios when the link layer introduces long delays. This article presents the relations between attainable throughput per station and attainable number of stations, as well as the influence of RAW, TIM and TCP parameters on both. We found that up to 20 continuously streaming ip-cameras can be reliably connected via IEEE 802.11ah with a maximum average data rate of 160 kbps, whereas 10 ip-cameras can achieve average data rates of up to 255 kbps over 200 m. Network slicing is an architectural solution that enables the future 5G network to offer a high data traffic capacity and efficient network connectivity. Moreover, software defined network (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV) empower this architecture to visualize the physical network resources. The network slicing identified as a multiple logical network, where each network slice dedicates as an end-to-end network and works independently with other slices on a common physical network resources. Most user devices have more than one smart wireless interfaces to connect to different radio access technologies (RATs) such as WiFi and LTE, thereby network operators utilize this facility to offload mobile data traffic. Therefore, it is important to enable a network slicing to manage different RATs on the same logical network as a way to mitigate the spectrum scarcity problem and enables a slice to control its users mobility across different access networks. In this paper, we propose a mobility management architecture based network slicing where each slice manages its users across heterogeneous radio access technologies such as WiFi, LTE and 5G networks. In this architecture, each slice has a different mobility demands and these demands are governed by a network slice configuration and service characteristics. Therefore, our mobility management architecture follows a modular approach where each slice has individual module to handle the mobility demands and enforce the slice policy for mobility management. The advantages of applying our proposed architecture include: i) Sharing network resources between different network slices;ii) creating logical platform to unify different RATs resources and allowing all slices to share them;iii) satisfying slice mobility demands.

Emerging network architectures in 60GHz millimeter wave bands will likely use dense deployment of access points (APs) given the high attenuation and frequent line-of-sight related outages. We show in this paper that naively connecting to any available AP, or even multiple APs, may not fully realize the promise of efficiently utilizing the extremely large bandwidths available in this band. This paper holistically addresses these problems through the Multi-AP Association Protocol (MAP) that: (i) indicates ideal durations for beam-searching at the physical/link layers of the protocol stack that will result in minimal interruptions to user-traffic, (ii) devises a Multi-AP association framework based on multipath TCP, which increases the network robustness by allowing immediate redirection of traffic to alternative APs whenever an existing connection is interrupted, and (iii) designs an exploration-exploitation aware flow scheduling algorithm that dynamically activates the sub flows to optimize transport layer performance. MAP is a lightweight, client side system that needs zero modifications to existing protocol stack, though it interacts with the latter to opportunistically trigger standards-defined functions. The paper also presents convergence analysis of throughput, experimental validation on a 60GHz network testbed, and trace-driven simulation studies that shows MAP achieving 5-7x reduction in re-buffering rate in HI) video streaming, rapid convergence to the best possible AP, and fair allocation of resources among clients.

Position weighted backpressure intersection control for urban networks

Decentralized intersection control techniques have received recent attention in the literature as means to overcome scalability issues associated with networkwide intersection control. Chief among these techniques are backpressure (BP) control algorithms, which were originally developed of for large wireless networks. In addition to being light-weight computationally, they come with guarantees of performance at the network level, specifically in terms of network-wide stability. The dynamics in backpressure control are represented using networks of point queues and this also applies to all of the applications to traffic control. As such, BP in traffic fail to capture the spatial distribution of vehicles along the intersection links and, consequently, spill-back dynamics. This paper derives a position weighted backpressure (PWBP) control policy for network traffic applying continuum modeling principles of traffic dynamics and thus capture the spatial distribution of vehicles along network roads and spill-back dynamics. PWBP inherits the computational advantages of traditional BP. To prove stability of PWBP, (i) a Lyapunov functional that captures the spatial distribution of vehicles is developed;(ii) the capacity region of the network is formally defined in the context of macroscopic network traffic;and (iii) it is proved, when exogenous arrival rates are within the capacity region, that PWBP control is network stabilizing. We conduct comparisons against a real-world adaptive control implementation for an isolated intersection. Comparisons are also performed against other BP approaches in addition to optimized fixed timing control at the network level. These experiments demonstrate the superiority of PWBP over the other control policies in terms of capacity region, networkwide delay, congestion propagation speed, recoverability from heavy congestion (outside of the capacity region), and response to incidents. Push applications and dynamic content generation over content-centric networking

Content-Centric Networking (CCN) represents an established candidate for the future Internet, proposing a routing architecture designed to elevate content to first class entity. Starting from the fact that the network usage has dramatically evolved towards content retrieval, CCN relies on an on-demand pull based mechanism to transfer data from the different sources to the heterogeneous consumers. This paradigm enhances the network in a number of ways, ranging from the newly introduced in-network caching capabilities to the benefits provided by the symmetric data routing adopted by CCN. In this renewed network scenario, we place our attention to those applications that do not perfectly fit the pull paradigm, stating that they need to be supported as well and proposing an effective way to achieve scalability on large scale push applications. We provide the following contributions: (i) we identify the functions that a data-centric architecture should support;(ii) propose and compare our solution with the state of the art framework designed for the specific problem of pushing data to content requesters;and (iii) evaluate their performance in terms of traffic generated and scalability achieved by simulating a real Internet Service Provider (ISP) topology and the realistic workload of a generic social network application.
