Most existing Software-Defined Networking (SDN) architectures for ad hoc networks impose one or more of the following constraints: infrastructure support, out-of-band single-hop (direct) links, location tracking, or preexisting ip connectivity. These limitations make the existing architectures inadequate for managing infrastructure-less Mobile Ad Hoc networks (MANET) having limited bandwidth, unreliable connectivity, and susceptibility to high interference, packet collisions, and losses. In our dissertation, we design an architecture for Software-Defined Mobile Ad Hoc networks (SD-MANET) that does not have any of the above constraints. We present three centralized communication protocols catering to MANET's need for proactive, reactive, and hierarchical routing strategies. We also develop two decentralized zero-control-packet routing protocols for MANETs characterized by ultra-low data rates. We present theoretical analyses of our protocols and perform simulation experiments addressing a wide range of scenarios: network scalability, density, traffic load, node mobility, and data rate. The results indicate that our solutions provide better performance than state-of-the-art approaches in most scenarios and address the inherent MANET challenges.

With the advancement of location-acquisition and mobile computing devices in today’s life, the trajectory data obtained from Global Positioning System (GPS) is becoming large which makes route prediction a very challenging task. The route prediction can be done in two modes-offline route prediction and online route prediction in terms of acquiring performance and accuracy. There are many different techniques of route prediction which mainly consists of three consecutive tasks- i) Route abstraction ii) Frequent route pattern mining iii) Route Prediction applied in the context of different application domains. Route prediction plays an important role in many location-based applications including vehicular ad-hoc networks, route navigation, traffic control and congestion estimation, Place recommendation and many more. Trajectory data have different useful information hiding into it like background data and contextual information. So, Privacy is a big concern while sharing this personal trajectory data with the server predicting the best optimal route. Many techniques have been proposed by researchers for ensuring privacy of user data along with maintaining availability and usability of the data. Rather than doing all pre-processing computations on a single machine, many algorithms have been proposed to make system scalable. In this paper, a comparative analysis of various existing techniques of route prediction along with privacy preservation and scalability issues is discussed with pros and cons. The main aim of this paper is to give insights of the different algorithms of the route prediction with the directions of future research.

Caching in Vehicular Named Data Networking: Architecture, Schemes and Future Directions

The TCP/ip stack plays an important role in terms of data transmission, traffic control and address assignment in the Internet of Vehicles (IoV), which has seen phenomenal growth in recent years. However, with the increasing technical requirements and daily demand in IoV, the drawbacks of traditional TCP/ip protocols, e.g., weak scalability in large networks, low efficiency in the dense environment and unreliable addressing in high mobility circumstance, become non-trivial especially in vehicular environments. Fortunately, the emerging Named Data Networking (NDN) technology provides a good choice to address the above issues in vehicular environments. Specifically, the introduced content store module in NDN which caches the sent/received contents, can greatly improve the networking performance by suppressing redundancy as well as enriching diversity. With aforementioned motivations, we thoroughly studied previous works on Vehicular Named Data Networking (VNDN) with emphasis on content caching, and then demonstrate the feasibility and necessity for employing NDN in vehicular environments with the help of content caching. Subsequently, we further strengthened the importance of cache selection and replacement strategies in VNDN framework, which is positioned to meet the challenges of data transmission efficiency and resource consumption by leveraging in-network vehicular caching. After that, we engaged in an in-depth survey on the existing cache selection and replacement schemes in VNDN, with their applicability compared. Next, further challenges during caching design were elaborately analyzed considering the specific characteristics of VNDN. Finally, we highlighted the potential research directions which may shine lights on the promising efforts to improve the performance of VNDN content caching.

Creating a Secure Underlay for the Internet

Adversaries can exploit inter-domain routing vulnerabilities to intercept communication and compromise the security of critical Internet applications. Meanwhile the deployment of secure routing solutions such as Border Gateway Protocol Security (BGPsec) and scalability, control and Isolation On Next-generation networks (SCION) are still limited. How can we leverage emerging secure routing backbones and extend their security properties to the broader Internet? We design and deploy an architecture to bootstrap secure routing. Our key insight is to abstract the secure routing backbone as a virtual Autonomous System (AS), called Secure Backbone AS (SBAS). While SBAS appears as one AS to the Internet, it is a federated network where routes are exchanged between participants using a secure backbone. SBAS makes BGP announcements for its customers' ip prefixes at multiple locations (referred to as Points of Presence or PoPs) allowing traffic from non-participating hosts to be routed to a nearby SBAS PoP (where it is then routed over the secure backbone to the true prefix owner). In this manner, we are the first to integrate a federated secure non-BGP routing backbone with the BGP-speaking Internet. We present a real-world deployment of our architecture that uses SCIONLab to emulate the secure backbone and the PEERING framework to make BGP announcements to the Internet. A combination of real-world attacks and Internet-scale simulations shows that SBAS substantially reduces the threat of routing attacks. Information-Centric Network (ICN) emerged as a new Internet paradigm to address the problems arising from the mismatch between the TCP/ip host-to-host transmission pattern and content-oriented access mode. However, the current network infrastructure does not support ICN. ICN needs to be deployed incrementally on existing networks, and its coexistence with ip is inevitable. Software-Defined Network (SDN) is an effective solution for achieving flexible and controlled deployment. In this paper, we design a compatible format for ip packets and NDN (Named Data Networking, Typical representatives of ICN) packets based on MPLS. On this basis, a network architecture for ip and NDN coexistence, called SDNDN (Software-Defined Named Data Network), is designed in combination with SDN. With data plane programmable capabilities, functionally extended switches enable parsing, processing, and forwarding of NDN packets; algorithms such as route optimization and cache management are implemented based on a global view. Experimental results indicate that SDNDN can realize the coexistence of ICN and ip networks and has performance advantages such as reduced content retrieval time. Besides, ip and NDN in the coexistence network are suited to different traffic models, which facilitates flexible network slicing.

Air quality and reduction of emissions in the transport sector are determinant factors in achieving a sustainable global climate. The monitoring of emissions in traffic routes can help to improve route planning and to design strategies that may make the pollution levels to be reduced. In this work, a method which detects the pollution levels of transport vehicles from the images of ip cameras by means of computer vision techniques and neural networks is proposed. Specifically, for each sequence of images, a homography is calculated to correct the camera perspective and determine the real distance for each pixel. Subsequently, the trajectory of each vehicle is computed by applying convolutional neural networks for object detection and tracking algorithms. Finally, the speed in each frame and the pollution emitted by each vehicle are determined. Experimental results on several datasets available in the literature support the feasibility and scalability of the system as an emission control strategy. (C) 2021 The Author(s). LOADS: Load Optimization and Anomaly Detection Scheme for Software-Defined networks

The decoupling of control functionality from the forwarding devices to the control plane in Software-Defined networks (SDN) provides a unique platform to design a programmable and reconfigurable network. Asingle controller due to its limited capacity and resources may not handle heavy load traffic generated from various smart devices. In order to handle this, multiple controllers need to be deployed at the control plane so as to ensure improved efficiency and scalability of the network. The data flow by the distributed controllers fluctuates frequently which results in an uneven load distribution amongst different controllers. So, to handle the aforementioned issues, in this paper, a Load Optimization and Anomaly Detection Scheme (LOADS) is proposed. Using LOADS, the probability of switch selection is determined using the following two factors (i) distance from the switch to the controller, and (ii) resource consumption ratio of the switch to its controller. Also, an ip flow-based network anomaly detection module has been designed to classify the traffic as malicious or normal. In order to address the network anomaly, the LOADS scheme uses Access control Policies (ACPs) on the user's behavior in the network. The proposed scheme is evaluated on Mininet emulator using POX controller with datasets of Internet Topology Zoo from BTNorthAmerica zone. The performance analysis reveals that LOADS minimizes the average execution time by 6.74% and 20.64% as compared to the existing competitive schemes, Distributed Hopping Algorithm (DHA) and ElasticDistributed controller (ElastiCon). Also, it helps in improving the overall migration cost and response time of each controller. The proposed LOADS scheme has the migration cost of 55.1 milliseconds as compared to the ElastiCon and DHA schemes alongwith the migration cost of 110 milliseconds and 140 milliseconds respectively. Position weighted backpressure intersection control for urban networks

Decentralized intersection control techniques have received recent attention in the literature as means to overcome scalability issues associated with network-wide intersection control. Chief among these techniques are backpressure (BP) control algorithms, which were originally developed of for large wireless networks. In addition to being light-weight computationally, they come with guarantees of performance at the network level, specifically in terms of network-wide stability. The dynamics in backpressure control are represented using networks of point queues and this also applies to all of the applications to traffic control. As such, BP in traffic fail to capture the spatial distribution of vehicles along the intersection links and, consequently, spill-back dynamics. This paper derives a position weighted backpressure (PWBP) control policy for network traffic applying continuum modeling principles of traffic dynamics and thus capture the spatial distribution of vehicles along network roads and spill-back dynamics. PWBP inherits the computational advantages of traditional BP. To prove stability of PWBP, (i) a Lyapunov functional that captures the spatial distribution of vehicles is developed;(ii) the capacity region of the network is formally defined in the context of macroscopic network traffic;and (iii) it is proved, when exogenous arrival rates are within the capacity region, that PWBP control is network stabilizing. We conduct comparisons against a real-world adaptive control implementation for an isolated intersection. Comparisons are also performed against other BP approaches in addition to optimized fixed timing control at the network level. These experiments demonstrate the superiority of PWBP over the other control policies in terms of capacity region, network-wide delay, congestion propagation speed, recoverability from heavy congestion (outside of the capacity region), and response to incidents. Deterministic real time networking is typically provided by dedicated fieldbus networks which prevents innovation due to their proprietary nature, inflexibility and high-cost. Recently, Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) emerged as a set of Ethernet enhancements, which enables innovation in deterministic networking areas thanks to its openness and capability to serve a variety of traffic types over a converged network infrastructure. However, configuration and management of TSN is difficult due to the complexity of mechanisms that need to be deployed, configured and managed in order to provide real-time guarantees. Luckily, with recent advancements in the area of software-defined networking (SDN), control plane programmability is simplified, also enabling logically centralized view for network configuration methods. In this paper, we focus on the potential of SDN for the configuration and management of TSN elements. We aim to contribute to an (i) understanding on how SDN can help in the configuration of TSN and (ii) propose a standards compliant TSN network controller, using micro-service architecture for flexibility and scalability. We motivate the potential and discuss the main research questions related to its design.

This paper gives an overview on actual trends and deployments of carrier-grade Ethernet in metro, access, and core networks. This includes the related motivation, concepts, and technologies as well as open issues regarding research, development, and standardization. Ethernet as a packet-based, connection-oriented technology is deployed for metro networks worldwide today. This is driven by the massive increase of (ip-based) data traffic and the related applications. The Ethernet deployments aim at most cost-efficient data service provisioning and the migration of all legacy Layer-2 services towards a unified platform. The goal is a massive reduction of both, CapEx and OpEx. Network operators and service providers impose increased requirements regarding scalability, quality of service including reliability and availability, and Operations, Administration, and Maintenance (OAM) features on their metro Ethernet solutions. These requirements are usually referred to as carrier-grade or transport Ethernet. Metro Ethernet services as deployed today mainly consist of Ethernet Private Lines (EPL) or Ethernet Virtual Private LANs (EVPLAN). These can provide dedicated LAN extension or LAN-like connectivity via ip/MPLS, respectively. A different approach is Pseudowire Emulation Edge-to-Edge (PWE3) which allows MPLS transport of Ethernet and other packet services as well as synchronous TDM services. Various network architecture and protocol options exist to migrate from metro SONET/SDH and WDM networks towards even more Ethernet-centric and -optimized networks. These include Layer-2 transport like Transport MPLS (T-MPLS), Provider Backbone Transport (PBT), and Ethernet-over-SONET/SDH/WDM/OTH. These services are currently under investigation or being standardized, and they will also migrate into long-haul and backbone networks.
