Technology innovation and sustainable resource use are closely related to a country's socioeconomic development. This paper explores the necessity of ongoing research and development initiatives to improve individuals' quality of life and promote sustainable development. Drawing from the Outcome Based Education (OBE) framework and ABET criteria, this research evaluates the growth and impact of research initiatives within a selected university. It examines the evolution of research departments/schools/centers in sciences, their contributions to scientific knowledge, and their relevance in addressing societal challenges. A few of the main goals are to chart the expansion of research units inside the institution, evaluate the relevance and applicability of their contributions to science, and measure their influence using indicators like publications, patents, and faculty awards. The purpose of this study is to provide information to funding agencies, educational institutions, and policymakers regarding the effectiveness of research investments in promoting socioeconomic advancement. Universities may play a critical role in tackling the complex issues facing society while promoting scientific knowledge and innovation by coordinating research goals with national development agendas and encouraging multidisciplinary cooperation. © 2024 IEEE.

The growing necessity for enhanced processing capabilities in edge devices with limited resources has led us to develop effective methods for improving high-performance computing (HPC) applications. In this paper, we introduce LASP (Lightweight Autotuning of scientific Application Parameters), a novel strategy designed to address the parameter search space challenge in edge devices. Our strategy employs a multi-armed bandit (MAB) technique focused on online exploration and exploitation. Notably, LASP takes a dynamic approach, adapting seamlessly to changing environments. We tested LASP with four HPC applications: Lulesh, Kripke, Clomp, and Hypre. Its lightweight nature makes it particularly well-suited for resource-constrained edge devices. By employing the MAB framework to efficiently navigate the search space, we achieved significant performance improvements while adhering to the stringent computational limits of edge devices. Our experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of LASP in optimizing parameter search on edge devices. © 2024 IEEE.

This research comprehensively explores the integrated application of multimodal learning and ChatGPT in the field of education. By reinterpreting the concept of multimodal learning, this paper emphasizes the central role of ChatGPT in expanding the definitions and boundaries of multimodal learning. It elaborates on the integration of ChatGPT with advanced technologies such as virtual reality and augmented reality, and how such integration fosters innovation in teaching methods and strategies. A networked system requires various jobs to be performed and servers in which to perform the jobs. Our work simulates a distributed system of servers and calculates scores that rank the servers (nodes) on how well suited they are for various specified jobs. The WebID protocol allows for the implementation of a Friend-of-a-friend (foaf) schema so that nodes within their networked group can decide whether to accept some new node as a member. The advantage of our work is the ability to rank servers related in a web structure (by some property, such as foaf:knows), as appropriate for a specific job, considering not only the inherent properties of the server but also its position in the network and how its properties relate to those of its neighbors. Using a network science approach, we have created a general model for scoring how well nodes in a system with privileged "friend"or "knows"edges are suited for given jobs, and this is the main contribution of this research. We define measures for a node n (often focusing on the ego-centered network EG of n)) of centrality, embeddedness, attribute and assortativity of EG, node degree in EG, and properties of randomly generated values of nodes in EG on performance properties. The overall score for a node is a weighted sum of these measure with the weights determined by the Analytic Hierarchical Process (AHP). Our experiments on randomly generate Erdos-Renyi graphs showed what was expected: as p (the probability of there being an edge between any pair of nodes) increases, the maximum, average, and minimum scores increase (as there is access to more resources via neighbors and others), and nodes fail (they and their neighbors cannot handle all tasks needed for a job) only for small p. © 2023 IEEE.

The function of STEM can help with the learning process, including practicums, one of which is used in the remote laboratory. Practicum is a vital part of the learning process, particularly in the sciences and technology. A successful practicum demands a balance of equipment between the number of tools and participants, but in practice, the number of participants frequently considerably outnumbers the number of tools. One approach is to provide a remote laboratory that can be accessible from anywhere as long as it is connected to the internet and has a flexible schedule. The remote laboratory is made up of four major components: a server (which includes a computer or laptop), a processor, an actuator, and a camera. The second component is the internet device, the third is the user, and the fourth component is the software, which in this case includes ThinVNC, ngrok, and the given GUI. The remote laboratory requires assistance from all STEM elements in terms of compiling materials with a science approach, utilizing modern technology tools and requiring engineering to integrate them, as well as the role of mathematics in terms of using experimental data for statistical analysis. According to the findings of the STEM-based remote laboratory experiment, it provides the following benefits: It can bridge the gap between the number of tools and the number of users, give ease of scheduling, user access, and delivering materials, assignments.

In order to improve the temperature measurement accuracy of mining infrared temperature measurement systems, this paper proposes an improved compensation method to reduce the influence of air transmittance on mining infrared temperature measurement systems. Firstly, based on the infrared temperature measurement formula, the impact of air transmittance on temperature measurement accuracy was analyzed. Secondly, based on the composition of the air in the mine environment, the main factors affecting air permeability were determined. By analyzing the absorption attenuation effect and scattering attenuation effect of these main factors, an improved temperature measurement compensation model for reducing the influence of air transmittance on the infrared temperature measurement system for mining is established. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, we test it in a simulated mine environment and compare and analyze the temperature measurement data before and after compensation with the algorithm that comes with the infrared temperature measurement system. The results show that the proposed compensation algorithm can effectively reduce temperature measurement errors, improve the accuracy of mining infrared temperature measurement systems, and is of great significance for improving the performance of mining infrared temperature measurement systems. © 2024 IEEE.

Thermal deformation of the motorized spindle significantly impacts the machining accuracy of CNC machine tools. The thermal expansion coefficient, a critical parameter affecting thermal deformation, is highly nonlinear, making it challenging to determine an accurate coefficient that enhances machining precision. This study proposes a thermal deformation model for the motorized spindle based on an improved Grasshopper Optimization Algorithm, aimed at optimizing the thermal expansion coefficient. Experimental studies were conducted on the motorized spindle at various rotational speeds. The results demonstrate that the thermal expansion coefficient obtained using the improved Grasshopper Optimization Algorithm yields more accurate predictions of thermal deformation, with smaller errors compared to actual measurements, than those obtained using an empirical thermal expansion coefficient. ©2024 IEEE.

The Lassa virus is responsible for the severe disease called Lassa fever which predominantly affects people in West African nations and notably in Nigeria. It is transmitted through soft-furred multimammate rats. Challenges in Lassa fever diagnosis, includes high equipment costs, the need for specialized experts, long testing times, and the issue of false alarms in existing AI methods prompted the development of a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model. This CNN model, using a 2 x 2 convolution filter, efficiently analysed microscopic blood smear images to predict Lassa fever. The study encompassed 15,679 such records, with a 70-30% training-testing dataset split to circumvent overfitting. Experimental results demonstrated the CNN model's exceptional performance, with a 96% recall rate, 93% precision, 95% F1-score, and 94% accuracy. Importantly, this outperformed other AI-based methods that didn't utilize patients' blood smear images, reducing the likelihood of false alarms. This research provides a promising advancement in Lassa fever detection, contributing to improved accuracy and timely interventions in West Africa, particularly Nigeria. © 2024 IEEE.

To address the problem that the traditional k-means randomly generates initialized centroids leading to the instability of the algorithm, Rdk-means (Range and density k-means) is proposed to improve the clustering algorithm. The algorithm introduces the concept of global density to select sample points. The centroids are initialized by selecting the sample points with the maximum density and distributed by a certain distance. At the same time, the concept of spatial location is introduced in the process of sample partitioning to filter out the centroids that are closer to each sample point, thus avoiding unnecessary centroid distance calculation and optimizing the shortage of longer clustering time caused by the initialization centroid process. Through experimental validation and analysis, the algorithm has been improved in clustering effect and stability. © 2022 IEEE.
