Time series prediction is a fundamental problem in scientific exploration and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies have substantially bolstered its efficiency and accuracy. A well-established paradigm in AI-driven time series prediction is injecting physical knowledge into neural networks through signal decomposition methods, and sustaining progress in numerous scenarios has been reported. However, we uncover non-negligible evidence that challenges the effectiveness of signal decomposition in AI-based time series prediction. We confirm that improper dataset processing with subtle future label leakage is unfortunately widely adopted, possibly yielding abnormally superior but misleading results. By processing data in a strictly causal way without any future information, the effectiveness of additional decomposed signals diminishes. Our work probably identifies an ingrained and universal error in time series modeling, and the de facto progress in relevant areas is expected to be revisited and calibrated to prevent future scientific detours and minimize practical losses. © 2025 SPIE.

Aiming at the problem of model misdetection and missed detection caused by the small defect and unclear features of industrial metal surfaces, this paper studies a large number of metal surface defects, and proposes a metal surface micro defect detection algorithm based on improved YOLOv5. First, this paper uses the FenceMask data enhancement method for regularization to solve the problem of few sample images. Then an enhanced multi-scale feature fusion pyramid network DS-FPN is proposed by introducing depthwise separable convolution, dilated convolution and spatial attention mechanism, so that the model can improve the ability to extract key information of images without adding additional parameters and calculations. An adaptive channel spatial attention mechanism SCBAM is also proposed, which adds non-local information to the original interaction with only local information, improving the feature expression ability of the model. Finally, through experimental verification, the detection accuracy of the model in this paper on the public data set GC10-DET has reached 74.9%, which is 4.7% higher than the original YOLOv5 model. © 2023 IEEE.

Recently., through the messy events that happen in the world, many people have been threatened by various terrorist assaults. Therefore, there is a need to provide various intelligent techniques for recognizing and diminishing these attacks reasonably. Biometric traits are considered one of the essential resources for these techniques. Among all the biometric traits, iris recognition has emerged as the most stable, reliable, low-cost, and distinct scheme for identifying or verifying people. Although many techniques in this field have been proposed, several issues still require solving, such as time-consuming and accuracy. In this paper, in order to handle these issues, an efficient iris recognition scheme depending on one of the common modern swarm intelligence algorithms has been proposed. Modified Glowworm Swarm Optimization (GSO) is employed for extracting optimal features from the iris with high efficiency in the optimization function. This employed optimization algorithm reduces the feature space dimensionality and the actual time needed for recognizing the human iris. The results show that the proposed recognition scheme has achieved higher accuracy using the IIT -Delhi dataset. © 2023 IEEE.

Facial expression recognition (FER) is a challenging task. The following two significant problems often exist in real-life FER tasks: first, facial expression images in the wild are uncertain, i.e., occlusion or blurred images;and second, there is little intra-class similarity and high inter-class similarity. In this paper, we propose a Self-Curing network based on Coordinate attention and Island loss(CoIsland-SCN) to address the above two problems. Firstly, the coordinate attention module aggregates the input features in vertical and horizontal directions into two independent direction-aware feature mappings, and the encoded attention contains channel, directional and positional information at the same time, which well solves the facial expression uncertainty problem;secondly, the Self-Cure module performs ranking regularization and relabeling according to the image importance and calculates the cross-entropy loss and the ranking regularization loss;and finally, combines the island loss to adjust the model to solve the problem of poor intra-class tightness and poor inter-class separability. The method proposed in this paper achieves an accuracy of 86.41% on the public dataset RAF-DB, which is very superior compared with recent experiments and proves the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2023 IEEE.

A rural traffic counting system was implemented using single-board computer paired with laser photodiodes. The system locally records the timestamp, length, and velocity of passing vehicles on a two-lane road. The system robustly worked with approximately 92% accuracy based on a one-day field test conducted in Nijo District, Masuda Municipality, Shimane Prefecture, Japan. The system offers several advantages over conventional road surface-bound vehicle detectors and traffic video surveillance pipelines, including mobile setup, absence of road obstruction, and higher possible data throughput. Furthermore, the system could be improved using data fusion with additional sensors and network connectivity between sensor nodes. The system provides an alternative for rural traffic counting, which could otherwise be unreliable, expensive, and difficult to update. © 2023 IEEE.

The paper investigates wave interference (between pressure waves) occurring in simple hydraulic systems. Water hammer was induced by simultaneous closure of three valves located at the reservoirs of a "Y" type hydraulic system. Numerical simulations were carried out with the help of the freeware computer package Allievi enabling the reader to replicate results in a direct manner. The influence of the following quantities has been tested: Reynolds number Re (laminar and turbulent flow), the length of the pipe arms (L1, L2, L3), the constant pipe internal diameter (Di = const.) and variable internal pipe diameters Di (D1 ≠ D2 ≠ D3). The results of the research showed how unwanted interferences between pressure waves may occur and thus increase the possibility of piping system damage. Further numerical investigations are sought in consideration of unsteady skin friction losses and viscoelastic pipe wall effects. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The importance of transversal skills for employees who work in the field of computer science is undeniable as transversal skills complement technical computer science skills and play a key role in their professional development and success. It means that while studying at higher educational institutions computer engineering and Information Technology undergraduates should have all the opportunities to develop these skills. And the English language classroom is not an exception since English teachers can use a wide range of strategies for developing transversal skills among computer engineering and Information Technology undergraduates. The research is aimed at finding out computer engineering and Information Technology undergraduates’ points of view on the importance of transversal skills for their future work and identifying effective strategies for their development in the English language classroom. 217 computer engineering and Information Technology undergraduates were participants in the research conducted by the team of researchers. To find out computer engineering and Information Technology undergraduates’ points of view of the importance of transversal skills for their future work and to identify effective strategies for their developing in the English language classroom, the researchers developed a questionnaire which consisted of close-ended and open-ended questions and items on a 5-Likert scale. The increasing demand for effective methods to recognize digital handwritten Arabic text has led to the creation of numerous online Arabic manuscript datasets to validate handwriting recognition systems. This tendency has been intensified, especially after the increasing use of devices dependent on digital pen writing, which requires continuous development to achieve an advanced stage of discrimination. This research aims to resolve the confusion problem in choosing a convenient open-source dataset that researchers can use to develop and examine handwriting recognition methods. This paper provides inclusive benchmarking of available and state-of-the-art online Arabic manuscript datasets and their unique features. It also provides a brief overview of the preprocessing and feature extraction methods used in the most important research. Research findings include identifying the most efficient databases and providing recommendations for future use. © 2025 SPIE.

The rapid growth of urbanization has led to an increasing need for efficient energy management systems to optimize energy consumption and reduce environmental impacts. Wireless sensor technology emerges as a pivotal solution, providing advanced capabilities in real-time monitoring, control, and management of urban energy systems. This paper explores the practical applications of wireless sensor networks (WSN) in urban energy management, highlighting their role in smart grids, intelligent building systems, smart street lighting, public transportation, water management, and renewable energy integration. Additionally, it addresses the prominent challenges such as data security, sensor durability, network scalability, data management, energy consumption, and infrastructure integration. The measurement of electric fields is widely used in various fields such as geophysical exploration, electrical engineering, meteorology, aerospace, and mechanical systems. Currently, mainstream electric field meters primarily use rotating shield electrodes as electric field detection probes. These probes detect charges in a spatial electric field through an induction plate. A rotating motor connects the grounded electrode on the induction plate, and the process of exposing, blocking, and shielding the induction electrode changes the induced charge, generating an induced current. However, such electric field meters are bulky and expensive. The aim of this study is to design a miniature membrane-type atmospheric electric field meter with electromagnetic drive using electrostatic induction from conductors. The device consists of a sensing module, a detection module, a wireless transmission module, and a protective casing. Compared to costly MEMS-based models, this technology offers lower costs, better environmental adaptability, and potential for widespread deployment. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).
