Competency Questions (CQs) are not merely intended for scoping the prospective content of an ontology and as information-seeking queries posed over an ontology, but serve manifold purposes in the ontology engineering processes. This position paper argues that CQs should be viewed as complex acts with underlying motivations beyond just eliciting facts. We explore the concept of questions in general, drawing on philosophical and logical perspectives to highlight the complexity of questions and how they function beyond information seeking. This understanding is applied to CQs for ontologies, revealing how they can serve various purposes in ontology development, such as knowledge acquisition, knowledge organisation, and validation. The paper also introduces the notion of types of CQs for ontology engineering and a first taxonomy of CQ types. Having identified different types of CQs, it may assist research into devising more specific methods and tools to support the development of CQs—be it manual authoring or automating it—and their use at various stages and tasks in ontology engineering, as well as contribute to a notion of quality of a CQ. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Speech emotion recognition (SER) has become an attention-grabbing topic in recent years thanks to the development of deep learning in the field of speech processing. However, it is difficult to recognize an accurate emotional state from only speech signals. Therefore, researchers have investigated multi-modalities such as speech, visual, and text inputs to improve the emotional recognition rate of speech. In addition, to enhance the generalized deep learning models for SER, multi-task learning (MTL) strategies have also been applied in the past decade. In this paper, a brief and comprehensive review of multi-modal multi-task learning (3MTL) approaches for recognizing emotional states from speech signals is presented, including multi-modal SER, multi-task learning SER, and multi-modal multi-task learning SER. In recent years, entrepreneurship has become an important topic in all business areas, and entrepreneurial knowledge and skills have reached higher social context that has consequently become integrated into educational programmes. Many higher education institutions revise their study programmes by integrating entrepreneurship courses and topics into curricula, but mostly at the institutional level without any specific guidelines or recommendations. The curricula could be analysed according to the entrepreneurial topics and subjects integrated in the engineering study programmes, which in some study programmes are sufficient, while in others there are minimal or none. Hence, caused by the practice of non-uniformity, and sometimes even absolute absence of entrepreneurial subjects, authors were focused on the students of various engineering studies through the research framework set for testing the student self-assessment on entrepreneurial knowledge, their motivation for acquiring it, and comparation of their entrepreneurial knowledge with the initial self-assessment. The research was conducted on a sample of N: 543 students with four hypotheses, at the University of Applied sciences Zagreb (CROQF/EQF level 6 and 7) on the six engineering study programmes in the field of civil engineering, mechanical engineering - mechatronics, electrical engineering, forensics, computer science and graphic design. © 2023 IEEE.

Introducing middle school students to STEAM projects can foster an interest in computer science and engineering solutions. These projects provide hands-on experiences that may encourage students to explore careers in science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. Engaging students in real-world problems can help them develop critical thinking skills and generate innovative ideas. STEAM projects can also spark students' curiosity and creativity. This paper will explore developing and implementing a STEAM lesson to introduce students to the engineering and design process and computational thinking. Moreover, this project also addresses a major environmental concern currently in New Jersey, specifically the destruction of the environment by the spotted lanternfly. Therefore, students are also applying skills in civil duty and environmental awareness as a part of their design and plan to eradicate this invasive species. © 2024 IEEE.

STIP (science, technology, and innovation policy/es) strive to give direction and incentives to the formation and specialization of the scientific workforce. How to draw the linkage between both factors of the national STI system? Here we explore the correlation between highly strategic research areas/fields supported by STIP and the scientific workforce of Colombia from 2013 to 2021. We used a dataset of 225 research funding calls and a sample of 28,000 + scientist profiles. We found no statistically significant correlation between both variables. Our discussion orbited around government STIP transitions, STIP models, and STIP timing of implementation. Our contribution lies in proposing a standardized and replicable diagnosis to identify strategic research areas/fields supported by STIP to the absent literature on STIP-scientific workforce relationship in the contexts of middle and low-income countries. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

COVID-19 pandemic situation made educational institutions worldwide shift towards online learning formats to minimize the spread of the virus. The content of online learning includes file, text, images, audio, and video, delivered directly to learners through web browsers. Both learners and instructors can communicate, collaborate, and exchange ideas similar to traditional classrooms. Online learning networks gain significant popularity in recent times, utilizing large-scale computer network technologies. Online learning offers convenience and rapid accessibility, allowing learners to study anytime and anywhere, according to their preferences. Also, large-scale computer networks require a high reliability network with zero downtimes. Thus, this work presents an environment monitoring and controlling system via internet of things technology for SUT E-Learning system which was developed by the Suranaree University of Technology (SUT). Number of session, %CPU usage, Current, Temperature and humidity inside server room were investigated. The proposed system improves convenience for system control engineers to maintain an online learning system with low zero downtime. © 2024 IEEE.

A two-layer labeling-based dependency analysis model is proposed to introduce the location features of words for the coreference disambiguation of entities. Firstly, two layers of labels are used for labeling, the second layer labels the location information of words, the features of sentences are learned using a bidirectional long short-Term memory network, the dependency syntax analysis based on deep graph decoding obtains the dependency tree of sentences, and the two layers of labels are fused to improve the performance and accuracy of coreference disambiguation. Experiments are conducted on the text dataset of power security entity relationship extraction, and the results show that the two-layer labeled dependency analysis has an improved effect on co-finger disambiguation, which verifies the effectiveness of the model for cofinger disambiguation on the experimental dataset. © 2023 SPIE. Gastric hemorrhage in upper gastrointestinal bleeding is an obvious indicator of deteriorating gastric disease. This paper proposes a capsule robot system for detecting bleeding in the stomach. The patient ingests a capsule robot containing luminol reagent, which detects bleeding in the stomach via chemiluminescence. The MCU receives the optical sensor signal, and the data is transmitted via radio frequency. The external lower computer receives and forwards the data to the upper computer for processing and display. The data is used to determine the presence and amount of stomach bleeding. Chemiluminescence is an excellent sensor, requiring no external energy supply, and demonstrating excellent sensitivity and selectivity. Combining chemical and electronic sensors presents opportunities for further development. Capsule robot detection reduces the discomfort and risk of secondary injury associated with traditional endoscopy. This paper establishes an experimental platform using porcine blood to simulate human blood, demonstrating the feasibility of the system. © 2023 IEEE.

The increasing number of authors and consequent publications in computer science can cause some pitfalls, such as understanding the use and fairness of quality indicators for assessing research. In this preliminary work, we aim to examine whether there is a correlation between the citation count and the number of authors contributing to a paper as well as their academic ages. Additionally, we shed light on highly cited papers and compare their authors. For this purpose, we investigate authors' characteristics by conducting data analyses based on a dataset of four prestigious software-engineering-related conferences comprising 5,143 papers and their authors. Our results indicate that the number of authors does not connect to the citation count, but the current academic age of the authors does. We also found that 98% of the highly cited main-track papers had a contribution from at least one senior researcher, whereas none of these papers was written by a junior researcher alone. These first results are a step towards more in-depth research concerning the fair evaluation of computer-science researchers-specifically regarding juniors and their inclusion.

Robots are becoming more prevalent and consequently utilized in numerous fields due to the latest advancements in artificial intelligence. Recent studies have shown promise in the human-robot interaction where non-experts are capable of handling the collaboration with robots. Whereas traditional interaction approaches are compact and rigid, natural language communication offers a coherent approach that allows interaction to be more versatile. The utilization of large language models (LLMs) makes it possible for non-expert users to take place in human-robot communications and manipulate robots to perform complex tasks such as aerial navigation, obstacle avoidance, and pathfinding. In t his paper, we performed an experimental study to compare the performances of LLMs based on the generated source code from prompts to perform aerial navigation tasks in a simulated environment. The few-shot prompting technique is applied to LLMs such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Mistral, and Claude on Microsoft's AirSim drone simulation. We defined three test cases based on UAV-based aerial navigation, specified model prompts for each test, and extracted ground-truth trajectories for the test cases. Finally, we tested the models on the simulator with predefined prompts to compare the predicted trajectories with the ground truth. Our findings indicate that no single model surpasses all test cases, using LLMs for aerial navigation remains a challenging task in robotic applications.
