In this paper we attempt demonstrate how we can use smartphone sensor data effectively for predicting gender. We specifically focus on sensor data that is assumed to inflict minimal risk to other applications, the system, or the user: Installed Applications, Network Traffic Amount, and Accelerometer readings. We propose several simple heuristics for pre-processing the data and for noise reduction which eventually results in improved accuracy in predicting gender.

software is increasingly deployed in vehicles as demand for new functionality increases and cheaper and more powerful hardware becomes available. Likewise, emerging wireless communication protocols allow the integration of new software into vehicles, thereby enabling time-bounded adaptive response to changes that occur in mobile environments. Examples of time-bounded adaptation include adaptive cruise control and the dynamic integration of location-aware services within fixed time bounds. This paper provides three contributions to the study of time-bounded adaptation for automotive system software. First, we categorise automotive systems with respect to requirements for dynamic software adaptation. second, we define a taxonomy that captures various dimensions of dynamic adaptation in emerging automotive system software. Third, we use this taxonomy to analyse existing research projects in the automotive domain. Our analysis shows that although time-bounded synchronisation of applications and data is a key requirement for next-generation automotive systems, it is not adequately covered by existing work.

Device shipment trends indicate that the number of web-enabled devices will grow very rapidly. The rapid growth of different types of devices in our daily lives will fundamentally change the expectations on device synchronization. In this paper, we introduce EDB - a database architecture that has been built specifically to support automatic multi-master synchronization between multiple mobile devices with potentially intermittent network connectivity. EDB supports the broader vision of multiple device ownership and liquid software in which applications and services are expected to seamlessly roam from one device or computer to another.

Infoblu Traffic for Expo is a mobile app for Android and iOS developed by Infoblu. It integrates real-time traffic information directly managed by Infoblu with third-party data: train and airline timetables, car parking etc. Such integration is enabled by the E015 digital ecosystem operating in Italy. This paper presents the innovative characteristics of this mobile app and provides a brief overview of E015.

Human Sensor data, Internet of Things and Social media are producing massive amount of data unfeasible to be processed by traditional algorithms, due to the fact that their understanding require high level perceptual and abstraction capabilities. In this paper we provide insights about our experience in developing and applying Serious Games to solve data collection, refinement and processing problems, four case studies are then analyzed, describing the elements that have led to effective solutions.

For notification distribution, we have designed and implemented a mobile device management system called Meta XA. Meta XA is based on an event-driven architecture combined with the complex event processing technology. In this paper, we propose an approach to bringing Meta XA into the cloud computing domain, without having to change its architecture.

Selecting and prioritizing major device models are critical for mobile app developers to select testbeds and optimize resources such as marketing and quality-assurance resources. The heavily fragmented distribution of Android devices makes it challenging to select a few major device models out of thousands of models available on the market. Currently app developers usually rely on some reported or estimated general market share of device models. However, these estimates can be quite inaccurate, and more problematically, can be irrelevant to the particular app under consideration. To address this issue, we propose PRADA, the first approach to prioritizing Android device models for individual apps, based on mining large-scale usage data. PRADA adapts the concept of operational profiling (popularly used in software reliability engineering) for mobile apps - the usage of an app on a specific device model reflects the importance of that device model for the app. PRADA includes a collaborative filtering technique to predict the usage of an app on different device models, even if the app is entirely new (without its actual usage in the market yet), based on the usage data of a large collection of apps. We empirically demonstrate the effectiveness of PRADA over two popular app categories, i.e., Game and Media, covering over 3.86 million users and 14,000 device models collected through a leading Android management app in China.

Web APIs provide a systematic and extensible approach for application-to-application interaction. A large number of mobile applications makes use of Web APIs to integrate services into apps. Each Web API's evolution pace is determined by their respective developer and mobile application developers are forced to accompany the API providers in their software evolution tasks. In this paper we investigate whether and how mobile application developers deal with the added distress of Web APIs evolving. In particular, we studied how robust 43 high profile mobile applications are when dealing with mutated Web API responses. Additionally, we interviewed three mobile application developers to better understand their choices and trade-offs regarding Web API integration.

Currently, there is a lack of tools or techniques which can clearly handle the complexity related to inter-component communication while developing Android applications. We propose a conceptual model which represents the inter-component communication at a higher abstraction level. We also propose a technique to derive test case from the model. The model can be useful in handling complexity at various stages of software engineering process. Mainly, it can be used for testing and analysis of inter-component communication in Android applications which we have demonstrated through experiment.

Following the ever-growing demand for mobile applications, researchers are constantly developing new test automation solutions for mobile developers. However, researchers have yet to produce an automated functional testing approach, resulting in many developers relying on a resource consuming manual testing. In this paper, we present a novel approach for the automation of functional testing in mobile software by leveraging machine learning techniques and reusing generic test scenarios. Our approach aims at relieving some of the manual functional testing burden by automatically classifying each of the application's screens to a set of common screen behaviors for which generic test scripts can be instantiated and reused. We empirically demonstrate the potential benefits of our approach in two experiments: First, using 26 randomly selected Android applications, we show that our approach can successfully instantiate and reuse generic functional tests and discover functional bugs. second, in a human study with two experienced human mobile testers, we show that our approach can automatically cover a large portion of the human testers' work suggesting a significant potential relief in the manual testing efforts.
