We consider the problem of distributed sensor information fusion by multiple autonomous robots within the context of landmine detection. We assume that different landmines can be composed of different types of material and robots are equipped with different types of sensors, while each robot has only one type of landmine detection sensor on it. We introduce a novel technique that uses a market-based information aggregation mechanism called a prediction market. Each robot is provided with a software agent that uses sensory input of the robot and performs calculations of the prediction market technique. The result of the agent's calculations is a 'belief' representing the confidence of the agent in identifying the object as a landmine. The beliefs from different robots are aggregated by the market mechanism and passed on to a decision maker agent. The decision maker agent uses this aggregate belief information about a potential landmine and makes decisions about which other robots should be deployed to its location, so that the landmine can be confirmed rapidly and accurately. Our experimental results show that, for identical data distributions and settings, using our prediction market-based information aggregation technique increases the accuracy of object classification favorably as compared to two other commonly used techniques.

Decision fusion benefits in a three-sensor suite environment, wherein the sensor suite had only a single observation opportunity was assessed in a recent study. This study is extended here to the more general case wherein the sensors have multiple observation opportunities permitting in essence temporal fusion. In the earlier study, two different fusion system architectures were conceived. These architectures are a) single stage - wherein the outputs from all the three sensors are fused simultaneously, and b) dual-stage - wherein fusion occurs in two stages, first between two sensors, and next between this fused output and the third sensor. This study addresses the problem of temporal fusion, i.e., fusion across multiple observations, under the single-stage fusion system architecture, examining all the four fusion strategies identified in the previous study. The special case of matched sensors with identical performance characteristics is used to parametrically compare and contrast the asymptotic performances under the different strategies.

Analysts responsible for supporting time dominated threat decisions are faced with a growing volume of sensor data. Most efforts to increase discrimination among targets using multiple types of sensors encounter the same problems: sensor data are received in large volumes. sensor data are highly variable. Signature features are represented by many dimensions. Feature values are intercorrelated, random or not related to target differences. Decision rules for classifying new target data are difficult to define. This paper describes a new methodology for solving several problems: selecting signature features, reducing variability, increasing discrimination accuracy, and developing decision rules for classifying new target signatures. The results from using a combination of exploratory and multivariate statistical techniques show potential improvements over the traditional Dempster-Shafer approach. This project uses data from operational prototype sensors and vehicles of interest for threat analysis. Acoustic and seismic sensor data came from an unattended ground sensor and three military vehicles. Although the resulting algorithms are specific to the data set, the data screening and fusion methods tested in this project may be useful with other types of sensor and target data.

The capability to track individuals in CCTV cameras is important for e.g. surveillance applications at large areas such as train stations, airports and shopping centers. However, it is laborious to track and trace people over multiple cameras. In this paper, we present a system for real-time tracking and fast interactive retrieval of persons in video streams from multiple static surveillance cameras. This system is demonstrated in a shopping mall, where the cameras are positioned without overlapping fields-of-view and have different lighting conditions. The results show that the system allows an operator to find the origin or destination of a person more efficiently. The misses are reduced with 37%, which is a significant improvement.

Several surveillance applications are characterized by the ability to gather information about the scene from more than one sensor modality, and heterogeneous sensor data must then be fused by the decision-maker. hi this paper, we discuss the issues relevant to developing a model for fusion of information from audio and visual sensors, and present a framework to enhance decision-making capabilities. In particular, our methodology focuses on the issues of temporal reasoning, uncertainty representations, and coupling between features inferred from data streams coming from different sensors. We propose a conditional probability-based representation for uncertainty, along with fuzzy rules to assist decision-making, and a matrix representation of the coupling between sensor data streams. We also develop a fusion algorithm that utilizes these representations.

An array of thick film pH sensor electrodes has been fused using two separate fuser designs: the feedforward neural network and Nadaraya-Watson kernel estimator. In both cases the fuser is based on empirical data rather than analytical sensor models. Complementary sensor responses have been obtained by fabricating sensors using different metal oxides. This approach provides some immunity to interference caused by the ionic composition of the solution being sensed. The Nadaraya-Watson estimator is shown to provide a useful alternative to the feedforward neural network for multisensor fusion where sensor distributions are unknown. Indicative test results are provided for the measurement of pH in printing ink. The results confirm that the fused results are more accurate than those obtained using the single best sensor, or simple fusion schemes such as averaging or majority voting.

sensor fusion is an important technology, which is growing exponentially due to its tremendous application potential. Appropriate fusion technology is needed to be developed specially when a system requires redundant sensors to be used. More the redundancy in sensors, more is the computational complexity for controlling the system and more is its intelligence level. This research presents a strategy developed for multiple sensor fusion, based on geometric optimization. Each sensor's uncertainty model has been developed. Using Lagrangian optimization techniques the individual sensor's uncertainty has been fused to reduce the overall uncertainty to generate a consensus among the sensors regarding their acceptable values. Using fission-fusion architecture, the precision level has further been improved. Subsequently, using feed back from the fused sensory information, the net error has further been minimized to any pre assigned value by developing a fusion technique in the differential domain (FDD). The techniques have been illustrated using synthesized data from two types of sensors (optical encoder and a single camera vision sensor). The application experience of the same fusion strategy in improving the precision of correctness of stereo matching using multiple baselines has also been discussed.

The revised JDL fusion model Level 4 "process refinement" covers a broad spectrum of actions such as sensor management and control. A limitation of Level 4 is the purpose of control - whether it be for user needs or system operation. Level 5, User Refinement, is a modification to the Revised JDL model that distinguishes between machine process refinement and user refinement. User refinement can either be human control actions or refinement of the user's cognitive model. In many cases, fusion research concentrates on the machine and does not take full advantage of the human as not only a qualified expert to refine the fusion process, but also as customer for whom the fusion system is designed. Without user refinement, sensor fusion is incomplete, inadequate, and the user neglects its worthiness. To capture user capabilities, we. explore the concept of user refinement through decision and action based on situational leadership models. We develop a Fuse-Act Situational User Refinement (FASUR) model that details four refinement behaviors: Neglect, Consult, Rely, and Interact and five refinement functions: Planning, Organizing, Coordinating, Directing, and Controlling. Process refinement varies for different systems and different user information needs. By designing a fusion system with a specific user in mind, vis 'Level 5', a fusion architecture can meet user's information needs for varying situations, extend user sensing capabilities for action, and increase the human-machine interaction.

This paper describes the feasibility and implementation of an In-drilling alignment method for an inertia navigation system based measurement while drilling system as applied to the vertical drilling process, where there is seldom direct access to a reference measurement due the communication network architecture and telemetry framework constraints. It involves the sequential measurement update of multiple nodes by the propagation of the reference measurement sequentially over nodes, each of which has an integrated inertia measurement unit sensor and runs the extended Kalman filter based signal processing unit, until the final measurement update of the main sensor node embedded in the borehole assembly is done. This is done particularly to keep track of the yaw angle position during the drilling process.

This paper examines the requirement for accurate estimates of the statistical correlations between measurements in a distributed air-to-ground targeting system. The study uses results from a distributed multi-platform targeting simulation based on a level-1 data fusion system to assess the extent to which correlated measurements can degrade system performance, and the degree to which these effects need to be included to obtain a required level of accuracy. The data fusion environment described in the paper incorporates a range of target tracking and data association algorithms, including several variants of the standard Kalman filter, probabilistic association techniques and Reid's multiple hypothesis tracker. A variety of decentralized architectures are supported, allowing comparison with the performance of equivalent centralized systems. In the analysis, consideration is given to constraints on the computational complexities of the fusion system, and the availability of estimates of the measurement correlations and platform-dependent biases. Particular emphasis is placed on the localisation accuracy achieved by different algorithmic approaches and the robustness of the system to errors in the estimated covariance matrices.
