Nowadays more and more measurement applications where sensor nodes cooperate to realize a data fusion process are entrusted to Wireless sensor Networks (WSN). Data fusion to be accurate requires that nodes be referred to a common clock and among themselves. In this scenario node synchronization got a crucial research topic and even sophisticated synchronization algorithms can be easily found in literature. Not a few others show to be especially designed for low cost, low memory and low power architectures. Their performance is usually evaluated either through analytical considerations or in simulation environments, but in some cases where ad hoc radio systems have been adopted. This paper makes a first step toward an experimental characterization of synchronization protocols that hold into account also influence factors which arise when commercial wireless communication busses as WiFi, BlueTooth (BT), ZigBee are adopted.

Large scale sensor networks composed of many low-cost small sensors networked together with a small number of high fidelity position sensors can provide a robust, fast and accurate air defense and warning system. The team has been developing simulations of such large networks, and is now adding terrain data in an effort to provide more realistic analysis of the approach. This work, a heterogeneous sensor network simulation system with integrated terrain data for real-time target detection in a three-dimensional environment is presented. The sensor network can be composed of large numbers of low fidelity binary and bearing-only sensors, and small numbers of high fidelity position sensors, such as radars. The binary and bearing-only sensors are randomly distributed over a large geographic region;while the position sensors are distributed evenly. The elevations of the sensors are determined through the use of DTED Level 0 dataset. The targets are located through fusing measurement information from all types of sensors modeled by the simulation. The network simulation utilizes the same search-based optimization algorithm as in our previous two-dimensional sensor network simulation with some significant modifications. The fusion algorithm is parallelized using spatial decomposition approach: the entire surveillance area is divided into small regions and each region is assigned to one compute node. Each node processes sensor measurements and terrain data only for the assigned sub region. A master process combines the information from all the compute nodes to get the overall network state. The simulation results have indicated that the distributed fusion algorithm is efficient enough so that an optimal solution can be reached before the arrival of the next sensor data with a reasonable time interval, and real-time target detection can be achieved. The Advanced Linked Extended Reconnaissance & Targeting (ALERT) Technology Demonstration (TD) project is addressing many operational needs of the future Canadian Army's Surveillance and Reconnaissance forces. Using the surveillance system of the Coyote reconnaissance vehicle as an experimental platform, the ALERT TD project aims to significantly enhance situational awareness by fusing multi-sensor and tactical data, developing automated processes, and integrating beyond line-of-sight sensing. The project is. exploiting important advances made in computer processing capability, displays technology, digital communications, and sensor technology since the design of the original surveillance system. As the major research area within the project, concepts are discussed for displaying and fusing multi-sensor and tactical data within an Enhanced Operator Control Station (EOCS). The sensor data can originate from the Coyote's own visible-band and IR cameras, laser rangefinder, and ground-surveillance radar, as well as from beyond line-of-sight systems such as mini-UAVs and unattended ground sensors. Video-rate image processing has been developed to assist the operator to detect poorly visible targets. As a second major area of research, automatic target cueing capabilities have been added to the system. These include scene change detection, automatic target detection and aided target recognition algorithms processing both IR and visible-band images to draw the operator's attention to possible targets. The merits of incorporating scene change detection algorithms are also discussed. In the area of multi-sensor data fusion, up to Joint Defence Labs level 2 has been demonstrated. The human factors engineering aspects of the user interface in this complex environment are presented, drawing upon multiple user group sessions with military surveillance system operators. Hyperspectral imagery is used for a wide variety of applications, including target detection, tacking, agricultural monitoring and natural resources exploration. The main reason for using hyperspectral imagery is that these images reveal spectral information about the scene that is not available in a single band. Unfortunately, many factors such as sensor noise and atmospheric scattering degrade the spatial quality of these images. Recently, many algorithms are introduced in the literature to improve the resolution of hyperspectral images using co-registered high special-resolution imagery such as panchromatic imagery. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm to enhance the spatial resolution of low resolution hyperspectral bands using strongly correlated and co-registered high special-resolution panchromatic imagery. The proposed algorithm constructs the superresolution bands corresponding to the low resolution bands to enhance the resolution using a global correlation enhancement technique. The global enhancement is based on the least square regression and the histogram matching to improve the estimated interpolation of the spatial resolution. The introduced algorithm is considered as an improvement for Price's algorithm which uses the global correlation only for the spatial resolution enhancement. Numerous studies are conducted to investigate the effect of the proposed algorithm for achieving the enhancement compared to the traditional algorithm for superresolution enhancement. Experiments results obtained using hyperspectral data derived from airborne imaging sensor are presented to verify the superiority of the proposed algorithm.

In this paper, a new multi-robot system framework is introduced to solve the problem of multi-robot map building. Compared with the classical architectures introduced in the literature, this kind of framework enhances overall system performance, especially in reducing calculations and communications, improving real-time performance. Meanwhile a general basic belief assignment function (gbbaf) is constructed to deal with the uncertain and imprecise information obtained by sonar sensors with the application of new information fusion method DSmT (dezert and smarandache theory) in the system and consideration of characteristics of sonar sensors. At last, Pioneer ii mobile robots are used to carry out experiments of map building for both single-robot system and multi-robot system. The comparison of created ichnography with the real map testified the validity of DSmT and efficiency of multi-robot system for fusing imprecise information and map building proposed by this research.

Low complexity track initialization from a small set of non-invertible measurements

Target tracking from non-invertible measurement sets, for example, incomplete spherical coordinates measured by asynchronous sensors in a sensor network, is a task of data fusion present in a lot of applications. Difficulties in tracking using extended Kalman filters lead to unstable behavior, mainly caused by poor initialization. Instead of using high complexity numerical batch-estimators, we offer an analytical approach to initialize the filter from a minimum number of observations. This directly pertains to multi-hypothesis tracking (MHT), where in the presence of clutter and/or multiple targets (i) low complexity algorithms are desirable and (ii) using a small set of measurements avoids the combinatorial explosion. Our approach uses no numerical optimization, simply evaluating several equations to find the state estimates. This is possible since we avoid an over-determined setup by initializing only from the minimum necessary subset of measurements. Loss in accuracy is minimized by choosing the best subset using an optimality criterion and incorporating the leftover measurements afterwards. Additionally, we provide the possibility to estimate only sub-sets of parameters, and to reliably model the resulting added uncertainties by the covariance matrix. We compare two different implementations, differing in the approximation of the posterior: linearizing the measurement equation as in the extended Kalman filter (EKF) or employing the unscented transform ( UT). A multi-sensor detection and fusion technology is described in this paper. The system consist of inputs from three sensors, Infra Red, Doppler Motion, and Stereo Video. This choice of sensors is designed to give high reliability, infra red and Doppler to provide detection ability at night, stereo video has the ability to analyze depth and range information. The combination of these sensors has the ability to provide high probability of detection and very low false alarm rate. The technique consists of three processing parts corresponding to each sensor data, and a fusion module, which makes the final decision based on the inputs from the three parts. The signal processing and detection algorithms process the inputs from each sensors and provides a specific information to the fusion module. fusion module is based on bayes belief propagation theory. It takes the processed inputs from all the sensor modules and provides a final decision on the presence and absense of objects, as well as their reliability based on the iterative belief propagation algorithm operating on decision graphs. A prototype system was built using the technique to study the feasibility of intrusion detection for NASA's launch danger zone protection. The system verified the potential of the proposed algorithms and proved the feasibility of high probability of detection and low false alarm rates compared to many existing techniques.
