Various fusion system architectures postulated and studied previously for environments with two and three data sources are further explored in this study to bring out the expanding scope for delineating the architecture options for multiple data source environments. A spectrum of single and multi-stage fusion architecture options are defined. The potential for such expansion of choices is illustrated using the scenario with four data sources as an example. Potential problem environments corresponding to this range of two to four data sources are identified. Various fusion logic strategies that can be brought to bear for the analysis of these fusion architecture options, when these fusionarchitectures are employed for Decisions In - Decision Out (DEI-DEO) fusion, are also discussed.

In both military and civilian applications, increasing interest is being shown in fusing infrared and vision images for improved situational awareness. In previous work, the authors have developed a fusion method for combining the thermal and vision images into a single image emphasizing the most salient features of the surrounding environment. This approach is based on the assumption that although the thermal and vision data are uncorrelated, they are complementary and can be fused using a suitable disjunctive function. This paper, as a continuation of that work, will describe the development of an information based real-time data level fusion method. In addition, applicability of the algorithms thar we developed for data level fusion to feature level techniques (e.g., shapes, lines, and edges) will be investigated.

This paper provides a description and detailed review of a multiple hypothesis tracking system, which handles data from two radars, and a number of other sources. An efficient method for processing detections from two (time-offset) radars, and integrating them in the multiple hypothesis framework will be described. The implications of such a methodology on the tracking filter will also be discussed. Humans exhibit remarkable abilities to estimate, filter, predict, and fuse information in target tracking tasks. To improve track quality, we extend previous tracking approaches by investigating human cognitive-level fusion for constraining the set of plausible targets where the number of targets is not known a priori. The target track algorithm predicts a belief in the position and pose for a set of targets and an automatic target recognition algorithm uses the pose estimate to calculate an accumulated target-belief classification confidence measure. The human integrates the target track information and classification confidence measures to determine the number and identification of targets. This paper implements the cognitive belief filtering approach for sensorfusion and resolves target identity through a set-theory approach by determining a plausible set of targets being tracked.

In this paper we describe a simple physical test-bed, developed to allow practical experimentation in the use of Decentralised Data fusion (DDF) in sensor-to-shooter applications. Running DDF over an ad hoc network of distributed sensors produces target location information. This is used to guide a Leica laser-tracker system to designate currently tracked targets. We outline how the system is robust to network and/or node failure. Moreover, we discuss the system properties that lead to it being completely "plug-and-play", as, like the distributed sensor nodes, the "shooter" does not require knowledge of the overall network topology and can connect at any point.

We consider the problem of identify fusion for a multi-sensor target tracking system whereby sensors generate reports on the target identities. Since the sensor reports are typically fuzzy, 'incomplete' and inconsistent, the fusion of such sensor reports becomes a major challenge. In this paper, we introduce a new identify fusion approach based on the minimization of inconsistencies between the sensor reports by using a convex Quadratic Programming (QP) and linear programming (LP) formulation. In contrast to the Dempster-Shafer's evidential reasoning approach which suffers from exponentially growing complexity, our approach is highly efficient (polynomial time solvable). Moreover, our approach is capable of fusing 'Ratio type' sensor reports, thus it is more general than the evidential reasoning theory. When the sensor reports are consistent, the solution generated by the new fusion method can be shown to converge to the true probability distribution. Simulation work shows that our method generates reasonable fusion results, and when only 'Subset type' sensor reports are present, it produces fusion results similar to that obtained via the evidential reasoning theory.
