Adaptive optimization of join trees for multi-join queries over sensor streams

Data processing applications for sensor streams have to deal with multiple continuous data streams with inputs arriving at highly variable and unpredictable rates from various sources. These applications perform various operations (e.g. filter, aggregate, join, etc.) on incoming data streams in real-time according to predefined queries or rules. Since the data rate and data distribution fluctuate over time, an appropriate join tree for processing join queries must be adaptively maintained in response to dynamic changes to prevent rapid degradation of the system performance. In this paper, we address the problem of finding an optimal join tree that maximizes throughput for sliding window based multi-join queries over continuous data streams and prove its NP-Hardness. We present a dynamic programming algorithm, OptDP, which produces the optimal tree but runs in an exponential time in the number of input streams. We then present a polynomial time greedy algorithm, XGreedyJoin. We tested these algorithms in ARES, an adaptively re-optimizing engine for stream queries, which we developed by extending Jess (Jess is a popular RETE-based, forward chaining rule engine written in java). For almost all instances, trees from XGreedyJoin perform close to the optimal trees from OptDP, and significantly better than common heuristics-based XJoin algorithms. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.v. The ability of a tracker to isolate the foreground target from the background of an image is crucially dependent on the set of features selected for tracking. Collins & Liu [2] propose an on-line, adaptive approach to selecting the set of features based on the insight that the set of features that best discriminate between target and background classes is the best set to use for tracking. In previous work [10], we have proposed an approach based on Combinatorial fusion Analysis for selecting features for Real-Time tracking. We discuss the relative merits of the two methods and motivate their combination to produce an improved tracking system. We show several results from a difficult tracking sequence with human targets to demonstrate the effectiveness of the combined system.

Recently, multi-sensor image fusion systems and related applications have been widely investigated. In an image fusion system, robust and accurate multi-modal image registration is essential. In the conventional method, the image registration process starts with manually-pointed corresponding pairs in both sensored images. Using these corresponding pairs, a transform matrix is initialized and refined through an optimization process. In this paper, we propose a new automatic extraction method for such corresponding pairs. The Harris comer detector is employed to extract feature points in both EO/IR images individually. Patches around the detected feature points are matched with a probabilistic criterion, mutual information (MI), which is a preferred measure for image registration due to its robust and accurate performance. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme has a low time complexity and extracts corresponding pairs well.

Large scale sensor networks composed of many low-cost small sensors networked together with a small number of high fidelity position sensors can provide a robust, fast and accurate air defense and warning system. The team has been developing simulations of such large networks, and is now adding terrain data in an effort to provide more realistic analysis of the approach. This work, a heterogeneous sensor network simulation system with integrated terrain data for real-time target detection in a three-dimensional environment is presented. The sensor network can be composed of large numbers of low fidelity binary and bearing-only sensors, and small numbers of high fidelity position sensors, such as radars. The binary and bearing-only sensors are randomly distributed over a large geographic region;while the position sensors are distributed evenly. The elevations of the sensors are determined through the use of DTED Level 0 dataset. The targets are located through fusing measurement information from all types of sensors modeled by the simulation. The network simulation utilizes the same search-based optimization algorithm as in our previous two-dimensional sensor network simulation with some significant modifications. The fusion algorithm is parallelized using spatial decomposition approach: the entire surveillance area is divided into small regions and each region is assigned to one compute node. Each node processes sensor measurements and terrain data only for the assigned sub region. A master process combines the information from all the compute nodes to get the overall network state. The simulation results have indicated that the distributed fusion algorithm is efficient enough so that an optimal solution can be reached before the arrival of the next sensor data with a reasonable time interval, and real-time target detection can be achieved. Data fusion has been applied to a large number of fields and the corresponding applications utilize numerousmathematical tools. This survey focuses on some aspects of estimation and decision fusion. In estimation fusion, we discuss the development of fusion architectures and algorithms with emphasis on the cross-correlation between local estimates from different sources. On the other hand, the techniques for decision fusion are discussed with emphasis on the classifier combining techniques. In this paper, the development of a prototypal wireless sensor platform is described, aimed at assisting elderly people and people with disabilities in their daily living activities at home. The wireless sensor network is embedded into a more general home control and monitoring network, from which it can borrow remote communication and supervision facilities, enhancing versatility and reliability. A wearable sensor has been developed, capable of smart recognition of abnormal gait and falls. Effective algorithms have been devised, to make the device suitable for low-power hardware implementation. After initial prototyping phases (based on microcontrollers and FPGA) vLSI synthesis has been carried out, to estimate actual silicon area and power consumption. Then, extensions of the approach have been foreseen, accounting for multiple sensor management. An example of a low cost embedded heartbeat monitor is discussed.

Mission success is highly dependent on the ability to accomplish Surveillance, Situation Awareness, Target Detection and Classification, but is challenging under adverse weather conditions. This paper introduces an engineering prototype to address the image collection challenges using a Common Optical Path, Multiple sensors and an Intelligent Image fusion System, and provides illustrations and sample fusion images. Panavision's advanced wide spectrum optical design has permitted a suite of imagers to perform observations through a common optical path with a common field of view, thereby aligning images and facilitating optimized downstream image processing. The adaptable design also supports continuous zoom or Galilean lenses for multiple field of views. The Multiple sensors include: (1) High-definition imaging sensors that are small, have low power consumption and a wide dynamic range;(2) EMCCD sensors that transition from daylight to starlight, even under poor weather conditions, with sensitivity down to 0.00025 Lux;and (3) SWIR sensors that, with the advancement in InGaAs, are able to generate ultra-high sensitivity images from 1-1.7 mu m reflective light and can achieve imaging through haze and some types of camouflage. The intelligent fusion of multiple sensors provides high-resolution color information with previously impossible sensitivity and contrast. With the integration of Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) and Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs), real-time Image Processing and fusion algorithms can facilitate mission success in a small, low power package.

In the paper the actuality of neurophysiologically motivated neuron arrays with flexibly programmable functions and operations with possibility to select required accuracy and type of nonlinear transformation and learning are shown. We consider neurons design and simulation results of multichannel spatio-time algebraic accumulation - integration of optical signals. Advantages for nonlinear transformation and summation-integration are shown. The offered circuits are simple and can have intellectual properties such as learning and adaptation. The integrator-neuron is based on CMOS current mirrors and comparators. The performance: consumable power 100...500 mu W, signal period- 0.1...1ms, input optical signals power -0.2...20 mu W;time delays - less 1 mu s, the number of optical signals -2...10, integration time -10...100 of signal periods, accuracy or integration error - about 1%. various modifications of the neuron-integrators with improved performance and for different applications are considered in the paper.
