Large Language Models for Wearable sensor-Based Human Activity Recognition, Health Monitoring, and Behavioral Modeling: A Survey of Early Trends, Datasets, and Challenges

The proliferation of wearable technology enables the generation of vast amounts of sensor data, offering significant opportunities for advancements in health monitoring, activity recognition, and personalized medicine. However, the complexity and volume of these data present substantial challenges in data modeling and analysis, which have been addressed with approaches spanning time series modeling to deep learning techniques. The latest frontier in this domain is the adoption of large language models (LLMs), such as GPT-4 and Llama, for data analysis, modeling, understanding, and human behavior monitoring through the lens of wearable sensor data. This survey explores the current trends and challenges in applying LLMs for sensor-based human activity recognition and behavior modeling. We discuss the nature of wearable sensor data, the capabilities and limitations of LLMs in modeling them, and their integration with traditional machine learning techniques. We also identify key challenges, including data quality, computational requirements, interpretability, and privacy concerns. By examining case studies and successful applications, we highlight the potential of LLMs in enhancing the analysis and interpretation of wearable sensor data. Finally, we propose future directions for research, emphasizing the need for improved preprocessing techniques, more efficient and scalable models, and interdisciplinary collaboration. This survey aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the intersection between wearable sensor data and LLMs, offering insights into the current state and future prospects of this emerging field.

RFID sensor development for corrosion monitoring in bridges cables

This article investigates the RFID technology for corrosion monitoring of prestressed concrete structures. Common corrosion detection methods are time-consuming and expensive, leading to challenges in early detection, especially in inaccessible areas. RFID technology offers advantages such as wireless operation, small size, and easy integration. The present paper aims at applying RFID corrosion sensors to the monitoring of steel strands used in prestressed bridges. As it will be shown, corrosion of both steel strands and sensitive parts of sensors is governed by localized corrosion. When the depth of pits become higher than 150 m on the steel strands, an alert is triggered by sensors. With this alert, maintenance actions can be planned. The paper also validates the radio-frequency communication with sensors embedded within a High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) sheath through in-situ testing. It is proved that embedded sensors in HDPE sheath can be manually interrogated by operators during inspections with a reading distance of 25 cm or more, depending on the location of the sensors with respect to strands. These findings highlight the interest of the method and contributes to the advancement of corrosion monitoring strategies for prestressed bridges, enabling improved maintenance practices and extended durability.

A Two-Step Method for Synchronization of Low-Cost GNSS and Visual-Inertial sensor Timestamps

The integration of global navigation satellite system (GNSS) and visual-inertial navigation system (VINS) has received considerable attention recently. GNSS sensors and visual-inertial measurement units exhibit complementary characteristics. By leveraging the strengths of GNSS in global positioning and VINS in providing smooth and continuous trajectories, the combination of GNSS and VINS can mutually enhance each other. To effectively fuse data from these different sensors, strict synchronization of the sampling times is crucial. However, in low-cost GNSS and VINS sensors, the measured timestamps are sourced from separate systems, resulting in unstable time delays (time offset) between the timestamps. In the absence of hardware synchronization, these delays become completely unknown, leading to unpredictable impacts on positioning accuracy. Therefore, this study proposed a two-step method to calibrate the time offset between GNSS and VINS sensor. In our approach, the temporal offset was calibrated by estimating the delay in a cascading manner. First, time-differenced carrier phase (TDCP) and VINS velocity data were loosely combined, effectively constraining the time delay within the sampling period of the camera. Subsequently, an optimization process in the second step further reduced the error in the time delay. Experimental results demonstrated that the extracted time offsets achieve an accuracy of 1 ms. With our method, comparable positioning accuracy was achieved without hardware synchronization. Furthermore, our approach provided a universal and cost-effective solution for the online calibration of time delays between GNSS and high-precision odometry.

A Proposal for a Solar Position sensor System with Multifiber Optical Cable

A solar position sensor is an essential optoelectronic device used to monitor the sun's position in solar tracking systems. In closed-loop systems, this sensor is responsible for providing feedback signals to the control system, allowing motor adjustments to optimize the angle of incidence and minimize positioning errors. The accuracy required for solar tracking systems varies depending on the specific photovoltaic concentration. In the case of the concentrator photovoltaic (CPV), it is normally essential to track the sun with a position error of less than +/- 0.6 degrees. To achieve such precision, a proposed sensor configuration composed of low-cost embedded electronics and multifiber optical cable is subjected to characterization through a series of measurements covering range, sensitivity, and resolution. These measurements are performed in controlled indoor environments as well as outdoor conditions. The results obtained exhibit a resolution of 2.6x10-3 degrees when the sensor is illuminated within its designated field of view of +/- 0.1 degrees, particularly in external conditions. Considering the performance demonstrated by the proposed solar position sensor, coupled with its straightforward modeling and assembly compared to position sensors documented in the literature, it emerges as a promising candidate for integration into solar tracking systems.

Meteorological observations are the basis of the development of atmospheric science and meteorological research. Due to the complexity of the different scales and regional environments of cities, researchers have deployed intensive and sustainable low-cost environmental sensors throughout a large area. In this study, we developed a low-cost sensor integration device and data monitoring Internet of Things (IoT) platform that can automatically collect data on meteorological factors and transmit nearly real-time data. We deployed 252 units in Wuhan, some of which were compared with standard meteorological stations in the field. The correlation coefficient for the comparison of multiple devices with reference stations was greater than 0.9. The relative deviation and mean absolute error (MAE) were small. This study demonstrates the feasibility of this low-cost integrated sensor and its great potential in regional meteorological observations.

Tactile information, serving as the most intricate form of data humans gather from the external environment, has long been a significant area of focus for wearable flexible sensors. The advancement of wearable technology and robotics in healthcare has spurred research into integrating thin, compact flexible sensors into robotic systems for mimicking human tactile tissue manipulation during surgery and data collection. Here, a continuous injection method is used to fabricate a multi-layer liquid metal sensor. By laminating multiple PDMS microfluidic layers, the two parameters of pressure and deformation are simultaneously measured in a decoupled manner. The compact and thin design of the sensor facilitates its integration into fingers or robotic digits, enabling assistance by deforming upon contact with materials and identifying their hardness through applied pressure. Separate performance tests of the two sensors show that the strain and pressure functions are decoupled from each other, and their ratios can identify and classify the hardness of different contact materials (glass, PDMS, and silicone). The hardness sensor can assist robots in operating human tissues during medical surgeries. The demonstrated fabrication and integration approaches provide a path toward tactile sensor applications in medical treatment, rehabilitation, services, and other processes.

Iontronic pressure sensors hold significant potential to emerge as vital components in the field of flexible and wearable electronics, addressing a variety of applications spanning wearable technology, health monitoring systems, and human-machine interactions. This study introduces a novel iontronic pressure sensor structure based on a seamlessly deposited Ti3C2Tx MXene layer onto highly porous melamine foam as parallel plate electrodes and an ionically conductive electrolyte of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide/thermoplastic polyurethane coupled with carbon cloth as current collecting layers for improved sensitivity and high mechanical stability of more than 7000 cycles. MXene-deposited melamine foam-based iontronic pressure sensors (MIPS) showed a high sensitivity of 5.067 kPa(-1) in the range of 45-60 kPa and a fast response/recovery time of 28/18 ms, respectively. The high sensitivity, high mechanical stability, and fast response/recovery time of the designed sensor make them highly promising candidates for real-time body motion monitoring. Moreover, sensors are employed as a smart numpad for integration into advanced ATM security systems utilizing machine learning algorithms. This research marks a significant advance in iontronic pressure sensor technology, offering promising avenues for application in wearable electronics and security systems.

In recent years, wearable sensors have made significant advancements in monitoring a wide range of body motions, from linear to angular motions. Yet, there has been limited exploration into twisting body motion detection, such as wrist twisting detection. Because most of these sensors measure resistance as their primary parameter, but twisting has little effect on the measurement of resistance. Nevertheless, the accurate detection of twisting body movements is crucial for applications in rehabilitation and athletic training, where precise motion tracking can provide invaluable data for performance optimization and injury prevention. Therefore, the development of wearable sensors as an effective method of detecting twisting motion is of importance. One promising approach is to consider alternative metrics, such as capacitance or inductance. Here, we present a method for detecting twisting body motions using capacitance-based sensors. The sensors are manufactured using screen printing technology with silver conductive ink on a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) substrate. As the sensor twists, the relative positions of different components of the capacitor change, causing variations in the measured capacitance. By establishing a direct relationship between twist angle and capacitance, a precise twist angle detection can be achieved. In total, three capacitor designs will be explored in order to identify the most effective configuration of the sensor. The effectiveness of each pattern will be assessed based on its sensitivity to twisting angles. A specific twist test platform will be designed to conduct twist tests for the printed flexible capacitor sensor. Both monotonic and cyclic tests will be conducted to evaluate the sensor's performance and reliability. The monotonic test will determine the relationship between twist angle and the capacitance, while the cyclic test will assess the sensor's reliability over repeated twist and how its performance changes over the loa

Sweat, a noninvasive and readily accessible biofluid, offers significant potential in health monitoring through its diverse biomarker profile, including electrolytes, metabolites, and hormones, which reflect physiological states in real time. Multimodal wearable sensors, integrating chemical, physical, and thermal sensing capabilities, have emerged as transformative tools for capturing these biomarkers alongside additional physiological signals. By combining advanced materials such as hydrogels, MXenes, and graphene with innovative structural designs, these sensors enable simultaneous monitoring of biomarkers (e.g., glucose, sodium, and cortisol) alongside parameters like movement and temperature. This Review systematically explores the classification and design of multimodal sensors, emphasizing their ability to address health monitoring challenges across applications including metabolic health management, stress detection, and hydration assessment. Key innovations in functional materials, such as conductive hydrogels and biomimetic structures, are discussed alongside challenges in signal integration, data processing, and power management. Additionally, advancements in self-powered systems and energy harvesting technologies have been highlighted as critical enablers for continuous, real-time monitoring. The Review concludes with a perspective on future directions, emphasizing the need for scalable manufacturing techniques, artificial intelligence integration, and standardized frameworks to enhance sensor functionality and adoption. Multimodal wearable sensors, by seamlessly integrating health data into daily life, hold the promise of transforming personalized healthcare, enabling proactive management of health and wellness through noninvasive, comprehensive, and real-time monitoring.

Reputation-Based Self-Differential Sequential Mechanism for Collaborative Spectrum Sensing Against Byzantine Attack in Cognitive Wireless sensor Networks

In order to meet the increasing frequency demand for sensors and their related applications, cognitive radio (CR) technology has been integrated into wireless sensor networks, detecting available spectrum resources through collaborative spectrum sensing (CSS) among multiple sensors and avoiding harmful interference to the primary user. However, some malicious sensor nodes (MSNs) may also take advantage of collaborative opportunities to launch Byzantine attack, reducing the performance and efficiency of CSS. In order to suppress the negative impact of MSNs, this letter proposes a reputation-based self-differential sequential mechanism (R-SDSM) to defend against Byzantine attack. First, sensor nodes with high reputation value are prioritized to participate in CSS and complete the data fusion with more appropriate weight allocation. Furthermore, a self-differential sequential mechanism is proposed to reduce the reporting decisions required for the fusion center. Finally, numerical simulation results demonstrate that in contrast to other data fusion rules, the proposed R-SDSM provides higher detection accuracy and fewer reporting decisions.
