Digital predistortion (DPD) is an effective way of mitigating spurious emission violations without the need of a significant backoff in the transmitter, thus providing better power efficiency and network coverage. In this paper an iterative version of the IM3 sub-band DPD, proposed earlier by the authors, is presented. The DPD learning is iterated between the higher and lower IM3 sub-bands until a satisfactory performance is achieved for both of them. A sequential DPD learning procedure is also presented in order to reduce the hardware complexity when higher order nonlinearities are incorporated in the DPD learning. Improvements on the convergence speed of the adaptive DPD learning are also achieved via incorporating a variable learning rate and training from previous values. A WARPLab implementation of the proposed DPD is also shown with excellent suppression of the targeted spurious emissions.

This paper presents a new approach to the design of integer wavelet filters and an efficient VLSI architecture for low power implementation. Instead of using the lifting scheme, power-of-two wavelet coefficients are derived directly from the roots of the half-band filter. Based on the integer wavelets, we introduce a fast integer Discrete Wavelet Transformation (IntDWT). The proposed integer transform for (9,7) filters requires only 17 integer additions and 15 shift operations. It, however, achieves the same coding efficiency as the floating-point approach. In the proposed VLSI architecture, several optimization techniques are used to remove the redundancy of computational units along the data path. The hardware and software simulation results show that both high performance and low power consumption for DWT chipset can be accomplished at the algorithm architecture level.

This paper describes the development of a sport watch, as well as the software and hardware required to design an integrated solution for getting feedback during and after walking and running activities. The developed system is autonomous, so that neither a smartphone nor a computer are necessary for configuration. The user controls the watch via a touch-screen based interface and all the relevant information is displayed on an LCD. Moreover, the watch contains all the required inertial sensors to allow giving different feedbacks to the user, such as the type of activity, the number of steps taken, the covered distance, the instantaneous speed and the average speed. Although this work is multidisciplinary, in this paper the emphasis is put on the description of the device and on the electronics and the algorithms implementation. Particular focus is on the efficiency in terms of computational time, and in achieving high autonomy on a primary cell battery.

With the rapidly increasing applications of deep learning, LSTM-RNNs are widely used. Meanwhile, the complex data dependence and intensive computation limit the performance of the accelerators. In this paper, we first proposed a hybrid network expansion model to exploit the fine-grained data parallelism. Based on the model, we implemented a Reconfigurable processing Unit(RPU) using processing In Memory(PIM) units. Our work shows that the gates and cells in LSTM can be partitioned to fundamental operations and then recombined and mapped into heterogeneous computing components. The experimental results show that, implemented on 45nm CMOS process, the proposed RPU with size of 1.51 mm(2) and power of 413 mw achieves 309 GOPS/W in power efficiency, and is 1.7x better than state-of-the-art reconfigurable architecture.

Sensors are used to monitor various parameters in many real-world applications. Sudden changes in the underlying patterns of the sensors readings may represent events of interest. Therefore, event detection, an important temporal version of outlier detection, is one of the primary motivating applications in sensor networks. This work describes the implementation of a real-time outlier detection that uses an Autoencoder-LSTM neural-network accelerator implemented on the Xilinx PYNQ-Z1 development board. The implemented accelerator consists of a fine-tuned Autoencoder to extract the latent features in sensor data followed by a Long short-term memory (LSTM) network to predict the next step and detect outliers in real-time. The implemented design achieves 2.06 ms minimum latency and 85.9 GOp/s maximum throughput. The low latency and 0.25 W power consumption of the Autoencoder-LSTM outlier detector makes it suitable for resource-constrained computing platforms.

Hardware implementation of lattice decoding algorithms becomes a challenging task as the complexity of the MIMO systems increases. This paper presents the design and implementation of a Schnorr-Euchner strategy based lattice decoder using FPGA. This lattice decoding algorithm has high data dependency during the iterative closest lattice point search procedures. The parallelism of the algorithm is explored and efficient hardware architectures are developed with the decoding function on FPGA and the data preprocessing on DSP. The system prototype of the decoder shows that it supports 2.7Mbits/s data rate on a Virtex2-1000 FPGA, and is about 4 times faster than a DSP-based lattice decoder. The bit error rate (BER) performance is also tested and verified with software simulation.

Ultra wideband radio (UWB) is a new wireless technology that uses narrow pulses to transmit information. Implementing an "all-digital" UWB receiver has numerous potential benefits ranging from low-cost and ease-of-design to flexibility. Digitizing an RF signal near the antenna, however, introduces its own set of challenges and has traditionally been considered infeasible. A high-speed, high-resolution analog-digital converter (ADC) is difficult to design, and is extremely power-hungry. The viability of an "all-digital" architecture, therefore, hinges upon the specifications of this block. In this paper, we demonstrate that 4 bits of resolution are sufficient for reliable detection of a typical UWB signal that is swamped in noise and interference.

In this paper we propose a general and precise Rate-Distortion (RD) model for standard video codecs, including MPEG4, H.263 and AVC H.264. The model can be used in almost all video rate control algorithms for different applications, from one-pass to multi-pass, and from constant rate to constant quality. It is designed taking into account previous theoretical results, and based on new assumptions which are confirmed by comprehensive practical experiments. We conceptually divide the RD model into two separate parts. The first part is codec specific and reflects the codec's properties. The second part is video content specific and describes the interaction between the video content and the encoder. This division provides several advantages. The model performs more precisely but needs less updating efforts. Furthermore, in this paper we introduce a simple complexity measure for the video content. As an example, we parameterized the RD model by the complexity measure for the estimation of Intra frame bits. This example can be used for complexity estimation in a start frame and in the scene cuts. The experimental results show that both the RD model and complexity measure perform well, with high precision as estimation tools.
