Of particular interest are efficient algorithms of detection and acquisition of smalltargets with low signal-to-clutter ratio (SCR) for reality applications. Some algorithms like matched filtering (MF), dynamic programming (DPA) and multistage hypothesis test (MSHT) have been proposed. Although some experiments proved that these algorithms have good target detection performance, it is difficult to implement by hardware because of more computational requirement. In this paper one simple and useful algorithm of the detection and acquisition for smalltargets with low SCR is presented. input image is preprocessed with using background normalization and background removal, and SCR of targets of difference value image outputted is improved. After image segmentation with an adaptive threshold is finished, the target detection is performed by continuous multi-frame detection method using spatial-temporal continuous motion features of targets. The targets are identified with multistage continuous filtering and a main target selected is acquired and tracked with the window. Experiments proved that the algorithm could detect smalltargets with SCR equal to 3 in cloud background. The method has been used for infrared tracking system in field and good tracking performance is acquired.

This paper examines a special class of signalprocessing technique called Minimum Variance Deconvolution (MVD) method and compares it with the commonly used Matched filtering and Wiener filtering based deconvolution processing in point source acquisition signalprocessing applications for Electro-Optical sensors. A step by step development of the batch and recursive MVD algorithm including comparison with the competing methods are presented in this paper.

Adaptive techniques for detecting small or difficult targets in the midst of high noise and/or clutter have a rich history in the radar array processing community. However, the utility of these schemes is only beginning to be realized for multichannel electro-optical techniques, specifically hyperspectral imaging (HSI). The data products generated by hyperspectral sensors differ greatly from those of radar and sonar arrays, yet recent studies using HSI data have offered promising results for modified versions of common adaptive detectors. In this paper, we compare a series popular adaptive detection schemes applied to HSI data for the task of land mine detection. Experiments using real hyperspectral image cubes, not Simulations, are performed with data from both the visible-SWIR and LWIR regions. Results are presented for different mine types in a variety of scenes.

This paper describes an overall methodology for the application of a multiple hypothesis tracking (MHT) algorithm to the IR surveillance system problem of tracking dim targets in a heavy clutter or false alarm background. First, It discusses the manner in which the detection and tracking systems are jointly designed to optimize performance. Next, it presents approximate methods that can conveniently be used for preliminary system design and performance prediction. Finally, it discusses the use of a detailed Monte Carlo simulation for final system evaluation and presents results illustrating the proposed methods and comparing predicted and simulation performance.
This paper deals with the detection of dim point targets in infrared images. Dim point targets detection is always a difficulty in information processing. Researchers have proposed many effective methods in this aspec...

data fusion concepts have been applied in many disciplines, but a general systematic formulation has not been well developed. This paper is intended to provide a guideline in applying data fusion techniques to a practical problem, the fusion of target identification (ID) attributes measurements. Formation of a consensus function is first presented, and is followed by construction of a hierarchical probabilistic network for computing a joint probability density. An ID fusion processing approach is described and integrated into a generalized track/data association algorithm.

We conduct a comparative study of the performance of a variety of spatial filtering techniques for detecting smalltargets against infrared terrain backgrounds. We consider parametric and nonparametric filters as well as an example of a robust estimation technique as applied to a parametric filter. In addition, we consider the effects of a clustering algorithm on filtering performance. Some of the filtering algorithms that we consider are matched filters, Laplacian filters, quadratic filters and the Robinson filter. Several filter dimensions are considered as well as the effects of a guard band. These algorithms are tested against the Lincoln Laboratory Infrared Measurement Sensor database which is comprised of high resolution dual band (3.5 to 5.2 (mu) , and 8 to 12 (mu) ) data taken at a variety of sites under a broad spectrum of atmospheric conditions and times of day. Target insertion effects are modeled carefully, incorporating the straddling of targets across adjacent pixels as well as the effects of diffractive blurring. We find that many of the filters that we have tested show similar performance and all are clutter limited.

This paper concerns itself with the target-fi ee behavior of data association in clutter. There are a pair of main results. In the first, a new technique is developed for the detection of track loss. The basis is Page's (cusum) test, but a modification is given for the situation that the track-absent parameter (e.g. of mean of squared innovations) is not known. The result is a Page-style test with variable bias and threshold. The second matter of interest is the target-free distribution of the maximum-likelihood probabilistic data association (MLPDA) statistic. It is confirmed via importance sampling that a Gaussian distribution is not inappropriate;but the mean and variance of this distribution are different from those of the un-maximized log-likelihood surface. Guidance is given on the calculation of these.

The technique of detecting and tracking of a moving point target is space-based background with low SNR is analyzed in this paper. An efficient method for detecting low speed targets is presented. The method simply uses multi-frame accumulating as the main operation in improving the output SNR. And it introduces candidate target records for target matching and recognition. The method is easy for hardware implementation that meets the demands of real time processing and low power consumption.
