Neuromorphic Computing is part of a broader subfield called in-memory computing, targeting to achieve post-von Neumann architectures, under which computing is done in situ, with the strengths of the synaptic weights stored and adjusted directly in memory analogous to a biological Synapse. Because of their reversible and rapid phase transitions across different conductance levels in a tunable way, Phase change materials have exhibited this kind of plasticity, proving their potential to mimic biological synaptic weight update. In this work, we perform an extensive finite-element simulation on a typical Ge 2 Sb 2 Te 5 (GST), a chalcogenide phase change material, mushroom cell memory device to imitate the plasticity of biological synapses. The model presented here provides significant insights to a better understanding of how these devices behave and the simulation results are benchmarked against empirical measurements.

The coordination of pedestrian facilities is the basis of design and operation for a Metro station, as it directly determines the final capacity of the whole station. All types of pedestrian facilities used in a Metro station, which can be categorized into three types (servicing facilities, passing facilities, and distributing facilities), are considered in this paper. Models based on queuing theory are established according to facility type. Fixed-and dynamic-service time models are proposed to simulate the servicing facilities; two-stage G/G(n)/C/C models are built for passing facilities; G/G(n)/C/C and G/G/C/C models are designed for distributing facilities. Next, a simulation model based on queuing network theory is designed to estimate the coordination among different pedestrian facilities in the metro station. The Simulink platform was used to run the simulation. Lastly, the data of Hujialou station in Beijing was collected to validate the models. The results demonstrate that the newly developed model is efficiently able to estimate bottlenecks and the coordination of facilities, which has great significance in pre-and post-evaluation for metro station facilities design and performance.

Parking monitoring systems provide the availability and statistics of parking space in an indoor or outdoor parking lot. image recognition-based parking monitoring systems are popular since their strong link to billing systems. With privacy concern, those camera-based systems are not suitable for parking spaces monitoring. Hence, the radar-based parking monitoring system is built in this study. By combining the TI 77GHz FMCW radar, Raspberry PI (RPI) single board computer, and image-based auto-labeling service, an automatic radar heatmap collector is constructed in the data collection phase. Those long term collected data is then employed to train and a CNN-based model is developed. Due to the coupling effects of radar signals on two adjacent parking space, the availability of six adjacent parking spaces is defined to be the parking status and denoted by a 6-digit binary code. The trained mode is then ported to several GPU-based edge computing platforms to infer the parking status. The main advantages of radar-based parking monitoring system are excellent inference results in dimmed environment, privacy-protected and lightweight computing load. Even the on-device inference using RPI platform gives a prompt response with very satisfied results.

Integrated deep learning and image processing method for modeling energy loss due to shadows in solar arrays

Shading poses a serious challenge to photovoltaic (PV) systems power generation, causing energy losses of up to 40 %, leading to power mismatches, hotspot formation, and accelerated module degradation. Accurate modelling and simulation of shading are critical for improving photovoltaic (PV) performance. This study develops two shadow‑detection pipelines: (i) the Classic Hough Transform (CHT) combined with K‑means segmentation and (ii) a new Deep Hough Transform (DHT) that learns semantic line features without the need for PV‑specific training data. A 1-kilowatt capacity solar array with planned shading devices was developed and used to perform the experimental analysis. The proposed methodology achieved an accuracy of 0.85, indicating a 32.81 % improvement in solar array detection compared to CHT methods. Computed energy losses due to shading were within 0.5 % to 1.9 % of System Advisor Model (SAM’s) simulated losses. evaluation with transient shadows from a pedestrian, vehicle, and cloud showed an average mIoU of 81.8 % highlighting the methods advantage over existing 3D modeling-based simulation software. Statistical analysis confirmed the method’s consistency, yielding Dice = 0.857 (95 % CI 0.728–0.943) and mIoU = 0.771 (CI 0.595–0.893). The parametric analysis highlighted the time of day and number of obstructions as key factors influencing shading on solar arrays, with mornings and evenings experiencing over 6 % shading loss variations. Overall, this integrated approach develops robust, real-time modelling and simulation for optimizing large solar energy systems.

Task-based assessment of binned and list-mode SPECT systems

In SPECT, list-mode (LM) format allows storing data at higher precision compared to binned data. There is significant interest in investigating whether this higher precision translates to improved performance on clinical tasks. Towards this goal, in this study, we quantitatively investigated whether processing data in LM format, and in particular, the energy attribute of the detected photon, provides improved performance on the task of absolute quantification of region-of-interest (ROI) uptake in comparison to processing the data in binned format. We conducted this evaluation study using a DaTscan brain SPECT acquisition protocol, conducted in the context of imaging patients with Parkinson's disease. This study was conducted with a synthetic phantom. A signal-known exactly/background-known-statistically (SKE/BKS) setup was considered. An ordered-subset expectation-maximization algorithm was used to reconstruct images from data acquired in LM format, including the scatter-window data, and including the energy attribute of each LM event. Using a realistic 2-D SPECT system simulation, quantification tasks were performed on the reconstructed images. The results demonstrated improved quantification performance when LM data was used compared to binning the attributes in all the conducted evaluation studies. Overall, we observed that LM data, including the energy attribute, yielded improved performance on absolute quantification tasks compared to binned data. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. Unrolling Post-Mortem 3D Fingerprints Using Mosaicking Pressure simulation Technique

Post-mortem fingerprints are a valuable biometric used to aid in the identification of a deceased individual. However, fingerprints from the deceased undergo decomposition leading to indefinite structure when compared to ante-mortem fingerprints. Moreover, the performance of the existing two-dimensional (2D) fingerprint recognition systems is still below the expected potential. These problems arise because fingerprints are generally captured by manipulating a finger against a plane. In post-mortem fingerprint recovery, the decedent's finger must go through several reconditioning processes to prevent the rapid onslaught of decomposition. To address these deficiencies associated with the 2D systems, three-dimensional (3D) scanning systems have been employed to capture fingerprints. The 3D technology is still in its transient phase and is limited primarily by 1) the lack of existing 3D databases;2) the deficiency of 3D-to-2D fingerprint image mapping algorithms, 3) the incapacity to model and recreate the 2D fingerprint capturing procedure to improve 3D-2D fingerprint verification;and 4) the inability to apply traditional fingerprint unrolling techniques on post-mortem 3D fingerprints. This paper presents a novel method to perform postmortem 3D fingerprint unrolling and pressure simulation to produce fingerprint images that are compatible with 2D fingerprint recognition systems. The thrust of this paper strives to: 1) develop a correspondence between 3D touchless and contact-based 2D fingerprint images;2) model fingerprints with deformities to provide a viable fingerprint image for matching and;3) develop a mosaic pressure simulation (MPS) algorithm to recreate the effects of 2D fingerprint capturing procedure.

Modern mobile processors run under the operating system (OS), which means that the workloads of processors also contain a lot of OS behaviors, like serializing instructions (SIs). Usually, a comprehensive performance evaluation can only be achieved through time-consuming full system simulation. This paper proposes a novel evaluation framework for the SI performance by isolating and modeling the SI behavior of the real-world applications into microbenchmarks in a microarchitecture-independent approach. Experimental results show that our method obtains the SI performance close to the ones obtained from full system simulation. Besides, the total evaluation time is reduced by about three thousand times.

To satisfy the input bandwidth and sampling rate requirements of data acquisition systems, digital bandwidth-interleaved analog-to-digital converters (DBI-ADCs) offer a practical parallel structure. However, the existing DBI-ADC correction methods are broadly inadequate in terms of design, testing, and implementation. Moreover, the evaluation and correction of the most significant feature of the DBI-ADC structure-wideband acquisition performance-is also imperfect. This paper proposes an itemized correction method for DBI-ADC structures. The proposed method simplifies the complex correction filter bank design algorithm into multiple simple correction filters and then separates and corrects the various errors of the DBI-ADC system. This dramatically simplifies the design, testing, and implementation process of the system, resulting in a highly convenient method for practical engineering. In addition, this method achieves a good correction effect, with an appropriate balance between the correction effect and the project implementation. simulation results and experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. Surveillance sensors aboard UAV are affected by environmental influences, e.g. atmospheric or topographic factors. This paper proposes a method for the automatic adaption of airborne sensor applications such as street surveillance to changing environmental conditions, preventing overall performance degradation with minimum human intervention. The basic principle of the concept relies on the selection of the most appropriate data processing algorithm available on board. To facilitate the determination of the most effective algorithm, performance models are used to predict the expected suitability of each algorithm for the given environmental conditions. modeling the relation between the environmental state and the performance of the algorithms is achieved by two approaches leveraging expert knowledge and machine learning methods. An evaluation was carried out in simulation as well as in real flight experiments showing that the proposed method is able to improve overall vehicle perception performance.
