The aim of this paper is to investigate and explore the viability of Embedded Zerotree (EZW) wavelet coder for therapeutic and medical image compression and high lights its performance based on quality evaluation measurements comparing to Mean square Error (MSE), Bit per pixel (BPP), Peak signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) and Compression Ratio (CR) for a particular set of medical images of different modalities. Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) has turned into a front line innovation in the spheres of picture processing in general and image compression in particular due to impressive and noteworthy change in picture quality at high compression quotient and better compaction of coefficients. The algorithm what is discussed in this paper has been implemented using the wavelet tool box of MATLAB. The simulation results exposition that the proposed algorithm is not only an option for the image storage and retrieval on the cloud based medical image computing expeditiously, effectively and economically but it also supports to enhance the utility services in telediagnosis and teleconsultation.

During recent years, the use of analysis and dynamical system modeling methods to solve biological and medical problems has considerably increased. The application of these techniques to physiological systems can generate a deep and diversified understanding of the general nature of these systems and of the complex processes that govern them. Medical Engineering studies the application of engineering and technology concepts to the development of instrumentation, materials, diagnostic and therapeutic devices, artificial organs, and other medical equipment. A content based approach is followed for medical images of CBIR. The purpose of this study is to access the stability of these methods for medical image retrieval. The methods used texture based retrieval GLCM (gray level co-occurrence matrix) and local binary pattern (LBP). The work developed in this paper establishes a contribution to modeling and simulation efforts in soft sciences, such as biomedical engineering. Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) constitute yet another qualitative reasoning paradigm. Fuzzy controllers have successfully been applied to various medical systems, and they therefore deserve to be mentioned in this context. Some of the more important contributions to the field of fuzzy systems as related to medical systems have been obtained and reported. To this end, a qualitative methodology based on inference and fuzziness is proposed that addresses some of the methodology inherent in dealing with these types of systems. To illustrate the results obtained in this research effort, two kinds of feature extraction technique of biomedical image retrieval are being used and better performance is observed using Fuzzy Inference system with 83.33 value of sensitivity as compared to ANN. © 2016 IEEE.

A Theoretical Model for Fast evaluation of Position Linearity and Spatial Resolution in Gamma Cameras Based on Monolithic Scintillators

In this work, we developed a model able to predict in a few seconds the response of a gamma camera based on continuous scintillator in terms of linearity and spatial resolution in the whole field of view (FoV). This model will be useful during the design phase of a SPECT or PET detector in order to predict and optimize gamma camera performance by varying the parameter values of its components (scintillator, light guides, and photodetector). Starting from a model of the scintillation light distribution on the photodetector sensitive surface, a theoretical analysis based on the estimation theory is carried out in order to find the analytical expressions of bias and FWHM related to four interaction position estimation methods: the classical Center of Gravity method (Anger Logic), an enhanced Center of Gravity method, a Mean Square Error fitting method, and the Maximum Likelihood Estimation method. Afterwards, spatial resolution as well as depth of interaction (DOI) distribution effects are evaluated by processing biases and FWHMs at different DOIs. The comparison between the model and GEANT4 Monte Carlo simulations of four different detection systems has been carried out. Our model prediction errors of spatial resolution, in terms of percentage RMSDs with respect to the simulated spatial resolution, are lower than 13.2% in the whole FoV for three estimation methods. The computational time to calculate spatial resolutions with the model in the whole FoV is five order of magnitudes faster than an equivalent standard Monte Carlo simulation.

Field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) are fundamentally different to fixed processors architectures because their memory hierarchies can be tailored to the needs of an algorithm. FPGA compilers for high level languages are not hindered by fixed memory hierarchies. The constraint when compiling to FPGAs is the availability of resources. In this paper we describe how the dataflow intermediary of our declarative FPGA image processing DSL called RIPL (Rathlin image processing Language) enables us to constrain memory. We use five benchmarks to demonstrate that memory use with RIPL is comparable to the Vivado HLS OpenCV library without the need for language pragmas to guide hardware synthesis. The benchmarks also show that RIPL is more expressive than the Darkroom FPGA image processing language. © Springer International Publishing AG 2016.

The top-down approach to system design allows obtaining separate specifications for each subsystem. In the case of vision systems, this means propagating system-level specifications down to particular specifications for e. g. the image sensor, the image processor, etc. This permits to adopt different design strategies for each one of them, as long as they meet their own specifications. This approach can lead to over-design, which is not always affordable. Conversely, if higher-level specifications are too tight, they can lead to impossible specifications at the lower levels. This is certainly the case for embedded vision systems in which high-performance needs to be paired with a very restricted power budget. In order to explore alternative architectures, we need tools that allow for simultaneous optimization of different blocks. However, the link between low-level non-idealities and high-level performance is missing. CAD tools for the design and verification of analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits are not well suited for the simulation of higher-level functionalities. Our approach is to extract relevant data from circuit-level simulation and to build an OpenCV model to be employed in the design of the algorithm. The utility of this approach is illustrated by the evaluation of the effect of column-wise and pixel-wise FPN at the sensor on the performance of Viola-Jones face detection.

Complex, high-integrated and high-performance microelectronic systems that include an interposer-solution become more and more dominant in the field of advanced 2.5/3D system integration. In such systems, for example required in network and image processing applications, the different ICs (e.g. processors and memories) are placed on a silicon interposer, which allow shorter interconnect lines between the elements, improving the signal transmission. The example system used throughout this paper combines an ASIC for signal processing with a high-performance memory. These two chips are placed as bare dies side-by-side on a silicon interposer using copper pillars. The interposer itself is located on a PCB. The good thermal conductivity of the copper structures within the interposer (i.e., top and bottom metal layers and the through-silicon-vias), in combination with the copper pillars underneath the dies, enable a high-performance and effective thermal behavior of the system; the heat produced by the processor and memory dies is dissipated through these elements to the PCB substrate that supports the system. However, in complex microelectronic systems that include arrays of different metal layers, TSVs, copper pillars, solder balls etc., their modeling and simulation can be an expensive procedure. This is especially a problem in early design phases where many different technologies options (e.g., packaging variants) have to be evaluated. Moreover, a real design exploration can be time consuming in many cases. In order to simplify the modeling procedure and speed up simulation, we present an alternative approach to derive simulation models from system descriptions, reduce the simulation time, and ensure the reliability of the obtained results. The array of copper pillars of the system is substituted with simplified blocks with the same volume and material properties. Big Data is now a widely studied concept in the field of massive processing of information, but testing systems and applications in this field is a difficult task, because the real environments to be used are of a large scale and many times impossible to reproduce. Usually, for this task executions in virtual settings, called simulations, are used. The present article presents a simulator for applications developed to be executed on the Apache S4 distributed computing platform for multiple hardware and software scenarios. A version in which mobile devices as well as processing units are used is proposed. The results show that the simulator without mobile devices gets good prediction performance results considering the processing and communication times between the elements of the S4 applications, and the other version with mobile systems shows a decrease in performance in different simulation configurations. However, adding replication in the elements that are communicated with the cellphones has shown substantial improvements in the application's performance.

With the rapidly evolving computer technologies, the multimedia and vision applications, such as visual recognition, scene modeling, image retrieval, and image categorization attract significant attention. The visual words, a collection of local features of images, can be used to represent image information. Because images contain very diverse contents, training limited visual words for representing various contents with high reliability is difficult. In this work, we will introduce a new scheme that divides the visual words into two types based on the analysis of visual word contents. By considering the content homogeneity of visual words, we design a visual vocabulary which contains macro-based and micro-based corresponding to feature points and key blocks visual words, respectively. The two types of visual words are appropriately further combined to describe an image effectively. We also apply the new approach to construct an image retrieving system. The performance evaluation of the systems indicates that the proposed visual vocabulary achieves promising results. © 2016.

In this paper, we have proposed and validated through computer simulation and experiment, an acoustic lens based focusing idea for ultrasound (US) imaging that eliminates synthetic aperture focusing typically used in conventional US imaging systems. The goal of the project is to incorporate US imaging functionality into our existing photoacoustic (PA) imaging probe in order to produce a dual-mode imaging camera. A Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) film located on and perpendicular to the lens axis is used as an US plane wave generator. The propagating ultrasound plane wave is backscattered by the target first and gets focused by the acoustic lens afterwards onto a 16-channel linear transducer array. A linear frequency modulated (chirp) signal is used for signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) enhancement. We simulate our acoustic lens based imaging system using our custom-designed lens evaluation package and test the preliminary system performance through a prototype imaging camera. Clear lens-focused images are observed in both simulation and experiments with a dramatic SNR improvement.
