A Wireless Sensor Networks' Analytics System for Predicting performance in On-Demand Deployments

The need for advanced tools that provide efficient design of on-demand deployment of wireless sensor networks (WSN) is critical for meeting our nation's demand for increased intelligence, reconnaissance, and surveillance. For practical applications, WSN deployments can be time consuming and error prone since they have the utmost challenge of guaranteeing connectivity and proper area coverage upon deployment. This creates an unmet demand for decision-support systems that help manage this complex process. This paper presents research to develop a system for predicting optimal deployments of WSN. Specifically, it presents results of image processing algorithms for terrain classification, results of modeling WSN signal propagation under different terrain conditions, results of optimization and visualization techniques for high-dimensional deployments, and system architecture for efficient integration and future deployment. Results show a feasible approach that can be used to automatically determine areas of high signal obstruction-which is essential to estimate obstruction parameters in simulations-and mapping of accurate WSN path-loss models to enhance the overall decision-making process during predeployment of large-scale WSN.

This paper presents a novel methodology of objective image quality assessment (IQA) based on Fuzzy Logic (FL) method. The main purpose is to automatically assess the quality of image in agreement with human visual perception. The used attributes (quality metrics) and evaluation criteria (human rating mean opinion score MOS) are extracted from image quality database TID2013. The fuzzy model design starts by selecting the most independent attributes, by applying Pearson's correlation approach and seeking the most correlated metrics with the corresponding MOS. Then, Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) is applied in order to construct an objective fuzzy model able to efficiently predict the image quality correlated with the subjective MOS. In this paper, different fuzzy models are produced by modifying certain ANFIS configurations. After that, we select the appropriate ANFIS model that provides high prediction accuracy and stability with taking into account its implementation complexity. The overall architecture of the selected FL model consists of four input metrics, two bell-shaped membership functions associated to each input metric, two fuzzy if-then rules, two linear combination equations and one output which gives the image adequate quality score. Finally the performance of the proposed fuzzy model is compared with other IQA models produced by different machine learning methods, the simulation results demonstrate that the fuzzy logic model has a high stable behavior with the best agreement with human visual perception.

Noise reduction is one of the most fundamental digital image processing challenges. On mobile devices, proper solutions for this task can significantly increase the output image quality making the use of a camera even more attractive for customers. The main challenge is that the processing time and energy efficiency must be optimized, since the response time and the battery life are critical factors for all mobile applications. To identify the solutions that maximizes the real-time performance, we compare several different implementations in terms of computational performance and energy efficiency. Specifically, we compare the OpenCL based design with multithreaded and NEON accelerated implementations and analyze them on the mobile platform. Based on the results of this study, the OpenCL framework provides a viable energy efficient alternative for implementing computer vision algorithms.

An improved beamforming schemes in coordinated multi-point systems

The capacity of modern cellular wireless networks is mainly limited by inter-cell interference (ICI). Coordinated multi-point (CoMP) transmission and reception were adopted as key techniques for Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) as they are capable of mitigating ICI through cooperation between several cell sites. Therefore, CoMP techniques provide a significant improvement in cell-edge and average throughput. For downlink CoMP, most research work mainly focuses on joint processing/transmission (CoMP-JP) mode. However this mode needs the access points (AP) to share the UEs' data and channel state information (CSI) simultaneously, resulting in a high overhead on the network. Coordinated beamforming (CoMP-CBF), which can avoid the data information exchange is a better solution to reduce the overhead. In this paper, an improved cooperative beamforming schemes for downlink Coordinated Multi-point System is described. The proposed improved beamforming schemes rely on the principal eigen-vector feedback schemes (e.g. codebook based). Although the description of the beamforming schemes is not a part of specification, the detailed information on the used coordinated beamforming approaches is important for performance evaluation and calibration of the results during CoMP phase. System-level simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can significantly reduce the ICI, and it performs well even with imperfect channel-state information (CSI) at the transmitter. © 2016 SERSC.

Optimal tracking performance for non-square plant models with input disturbance and feedback channel noise

In this paper, the optimal tracking performance for linear time invariant (LTI) and non-square plants was investigated. An H-2 norm of error signal between the reference input and the output of system is used as the tracking performance index. Due to the limitations of non-square plants in tracking reference input signals, two-degrees-of-freedom controller was adopted to control the system. The reference input under consideration is a step signal and there exists input stochastic disturbance and feedback channel noise. Explicit expression is given to show that the tracking performance in these kinds of systems is critically dependent on the intrinsic characteristics of the given plant, including the locations not the directions of the nonminimum phase zeros and unstable poles, which is different from the plants that have the same input and output dimensions. It is also shown that the input disturbance and feedback channel noise may degenerate the tracking performance. Finally, computer simulation is provided to illustrate the analytical results. Quantitative evaluation of mineral density of carious dental lesion is one of the major aims in cariology investigations particularly in the study of caries remineralization. Nowadays X-ray micro computed tomography (Micro-CT) is used as a well-known modality for this purpose. However, the produced Micro-CT images are affected by substantial noise. To address this issue, we propose a new approach for de-noising dental Micro-CT images based on total variation (TV) modeling. The idea of applying this method traces back to the structural features of a tooth, and almost nontextural nature of noise-free images. So, using TV we intend to separate texture from cartoon which results in major reduction of the noise in Micro-CT dental images. Our simulation results on a dataset of 51 teeth of size 1000x1000 showed that our method outperforms BM3D method, currently one of the state-of-the-art de-noising methods, in terms of Contrast-to-Noise Ratio (123.02 +/- 11.29 vs. 96.79 +/- 6.87) while Edge Preservation Indexes are the same.

Striping noise is a phenomenon intrinsic to the process of image acquisition by means of scanning or pushbroom systems, caused by a poor radiometric calibration of the sensor. Although in-flight calibration has been performed, residual spatially and spectrally coherent noise may perturb the quantitative analysis of images and the extraction of physical parameters. Destriping methods can be classified in three main groups: statistical-based methods, digital-filtering methods and radiometric-equalisation methods. Their performances depend both on the scene under investigation and on the type and intensity of noise to be treated. Availability of simulated data at each step of the digital image formation process, including that one before the introduction of the striping effect, is particularly useful since it offers the opportunity to test and adjust a variety of image processing and calibration algorithms. This paper presents the performance of a statistical-based destriping method applied to a set of simulated and to images acquired by the EO-1 Hyperion hyperspectral sensor. The set of simulated data with different intensities of coherent and random noise was generated using an image simulator implemented for the PRISMA mission. Algorithm's performance was tested by evaluating most commonly used quality indexes. For the same purpose, a statistical evaluation based on image correlation and image differences between the corrected and ideal images was carried out. Results of the statistical analysis were compared with the outcome of the quality indexes-based analysis.

PPDM: A Privacy-Preserving Protocol for Cloud-Assisted e-Healthcare systems

E-healthcare systems have been increasingly facilitating health condition monitoring, disease modeling and early intervention, and evidence-based medical treatment by medical text mining and image feature extraction. Owing to the resource constraint of wearable mobile devices, it is required to outsource the frequently collected personal health information (PHI) into the cloud. Unfortunately, delegating both storage and computation to the untrusted entity would bring a series of security and privacy issues. The existing work mainly focused on fine-grained privacy-preserving static medical text access and analysis, which can hardly afford the dynamic health condition fluctuation and medical image analysis. In this paper, a secure and efficient privacy-preserving dynamic medical text mining and image feature extraction scheme PPDM in cloud-assisted e-healthcare systems is proposed. Firstly, an efficient privacy-preserving fully homomorphic data aggregation is proposed, which serves the basis for our proposed PPDM. Then, an outsourced disease modeling and early intervention is achieved, respectively by devising an efficient privacy-preserving function correlation matching PPDM1 from dynamic medical text mining and designing a privacy-preserving medical image feature extraction PPDM2. Finally, the formal security proof and extensive performance evaluation demonstrate our proposed PPDM achieves a higher security level (i.e., information-theoretic security for input privacy and adaptive chosen ciphertext attack (CCA2) security for output privacy) in the honest but curious model with optimized efficiency advantage over the state-of-the-art in terms of both computational and communication overhead.

Sequential Subspace Estimator for biometric authentication

The principal challenge in biometric authentication is to mitigate the effects of any interference while extracting the biometric features for biometric template generation. Most biometric systems are developed under the assumption that extracted biometrics and the nature of their associated interferences are linear, stationary, and homogeneous. The performance of biometric authentication deteriorates when the underlying assumptions are violated due to nonlinear, nonstationary, and heterogeneous noise. Therefore, a more sophisticated filtering method needs to be developed to deal with these challenges. In this paper, a new Sequential Subspace Estimator (SSE) algorithm for biometric authentication is proposed. In the proposed method, a sequential estimator is being designed in the image subspace which addresses the challenges due to nonlinear, nonstationary, and heterogeneous noise. Furthermore, the proposed method includes a subspace technique that overcomes the computational complexity associated with the sequential estimator. The theoretical foundation of the proposed method along with the experimental results is also presented in this paper. For the experimental evaluation of the proposed method, we use facial images from two public databases: the "Put Face Database" and the "Indian Face Database". The experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method in comparison with its counterparts. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Underwater acoustic (UWA) communication is used for remote control and wireless image transmission in remotely operated vehicle (ROV). Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been studied to deal with multipath interference caused by long delay channels. However, standard OFDM requires a very long guard interval (GI) for achieving inter-symbol interference (ISI)-free transmission in shallow water UWA channels. The very long GI decreases an effective transmission rate and makes a received response very slow. We report experimental evaluation of diversity techniques combining with data selective Rake reception (DSRake) to keep high communication quality even for a short GI. The improvement of BER performance using the DSRake have been observed in the distances of 1 to 20 meters between transmitter and receiver units in a swimming pool. The simulation has also presented the improvement of BER performance by DSRake, which is based on multipath delay models according to our measured delay profiles.
