In this textbook, fundamental methods for model-based design of mechatronic systems are presented in a systematic, comprehensive form. The method framework presented here comprises domain-neutral methods for modeling and performance analysis: multi-domain modeling (energy/port/signal-based), simulation (ODE/DAE/hybrid systems), robust control methods, stochasticdynamic analysis, and quantitative evaluation of designs using system budgets. The model framework is composed of analytical dynamic models for important physical and technical domains of realization of mechatronic functions, such as multibody dynamics, digital information processing and electromechanical transducers. Building on the modeling concept of a technology-independent generic mechatronic transducer, concrete formulations for electrostatic, piezoelectric, electromagnetic, and electrodynamic transducers are presented. More than 50 fully worked out design examples clearly illustrate these methods and concepts and enable independent study of the material.

This thesis aims at improving the spectral efficiency of fiber-based optical transmissions in the context of access networks where an Intensity Modulated/Direct Detected (IMDD) technique is used. In such a context, an increase of fiber length or data rate might lead to significant inter symbol interference problem. For the reason of cost, instead of investing in expensive technologies, a telecom operator might prefer compensating transmission detriments by means of signal processing techniques. In this thesis, the compensation of transmission detriments using signal processing techniques is addressed. In addition, the potential of advanced modulation techniques such as the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is also studied. The studies described in this thesis are extensively based on numerical simulation results. Therefore, the first part of this thesis is dedicated to the modeling of an optical transmission link. Both model parameter extraction and model validation are carried out by means of experimental measures. Based on the channel model, the first study concerns channel equalization techniques for a conventional on-off-keying non return-to-zero transmission. It is found that linear equalization techniques may extend transmission reach by tens of kilometers. When nonlinear equalizers are used, reach is further extended by tens of kilometers and chromatic dispersion-induced power penalty is improved by up to 2 dB. Moreover, when the Nyquist pulse-shaping technique is used, the power penalty is further improved by 2 dB. The second study in this thesis is dedicated to the performance evaluation of OFDM modulation. Particularly, conventional Levin-Campello bit/power loading OFDM systems are subjected to the study. Based on the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) precoding technique, a precoded OFDM system is also proposed. Visual vocabulary representation approach has been successfully applied to many multimedia and vision applications, including visual recognition, image retrieval, and scene modeling/categorization. The idea behind the visual vocabulary representation is that an image can be represented by visual words, a collection of local features of images. In this work, we will develop a new scheme for the construction of visual vocabulary based on the analysis of visual word contents. By considering the content homogeneity of visual words, we design a visual vocabulary which contains macro-sense and micro-sense visual words. The two types of visual words are appropriately further combined to describe an image effectively. We also apply the visual vocabulary to construct image categorization system. The performance evaluation for the system indicates that the proposed visual vocabulary achieves promising results. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

Application of Software Defined Radio (SDR) principles to mobile devices faces numerous opposing constraints including low power, low cost, and high performance. This situation motivates the definition of advanced methods, models, and tools in order to maintain the design complexity of terminal architectures. In this context, architects of next generation radio communication systems aim at designing SDR baseband architectures able to support a wide variety of communication interfaces with a wide range of processing resources and that fully meet expected requirements. As a result, it is mandatory to efficiently assist system architects in the process of evaluating performances of potential architectures and in exploration of the design space. In this paper, we present a case study representative of next generation radio communication systems and we describe its modeling and evaluation of performances of the related architecture. The case study corresponds to an adaptive multi-standard and multi-application radio communication system. performance evaluation is performed following a simulation-based approach. modeling techniques are proposed to facilitate estimation of expected resources according to complex use case scenarios and to allow achieving a good compromise between simulation speed of architecture models and accuracy of provided estimations. The presented results concern the evolution over time of the architecture and the observation of resource usage taking into account dynamic changes of the system environment.

Although the research on the design of heterogeneous concurrent systems has a long and rich history, a unified design methodology and tool support have not emerged so far. Therefore, the creation of such systems remains a difficult, time-consuming and error-prone process. The absence of principled support for system evaluation and optimization at high level of abstraction makes the quality of the resulting implementation strongly dependent on the experience or individual preferences of the designer. In this work we are presenting TURNUS, a unified dataflow design space exploration framework for heterogeneous parallel systems. This open source framework represents a decade of research on high-level modelling and simulation methods and tools for system level performance estimation and optimization. Last year we presented heuristic algorithms that were focused on the results of exploration in terms of algorithmic optimization, rapid performance estimation, application throughput, buffer size dimensioning and power optimization. This year we are presenting the novelties that have been introduced in TURNUS such as clock gating, pipelining optimization, kernel splitting algorithms, advanced partitioning algorithms and scheduling optimization based on model predictive control techniques.

This paper explores a relatively new methodological approach for the field integrating learning and education, with other research areas, such as neurobiological, cognitive, and computational sciences. Specifically, presented work is an interdisciplinary piece of research aiming to simulate appropriately a challenging and critical issue concerned with academic performance in e-learning systems. Namely, considering face to face tutoring phenomenon observed while an interactive e-learning process is performed. Referring to strong interest announced by educationalists to know how neurons' synapses inside the brain are interconnected. Together to perform communication processing among brain regions. Herein, a special attention has been developed towards dynamical academic evaluation of timely based brain learning via face to face (FTF) interactive tutoring. In other words, this piece of research presents an interdisciplinary realistic dynamic investigation. For academic performance phenomenon associated with e-learners' contribution as time response performed human's brain neuronal function. Accordingly, Artificial Neural Networks (ANN~s) have been adopted for realistic modeling of academic performance evaluation based on timely dependant student's response till attaining learning convergence (desired output). After running of designed realistic simulation program, some interesting results have been presented. Interestingly, individual differences' phenomenon observed via after statistical analysis of obtained simulation results.

The images of outdoor scenes obtained in haze, fog and other weather days are usually have poor contrast and color fidelity. In this paper, in order to effectively improve the degraded image in haze quality, reduce the effect of the haze to outdoor traffic video monitoring systems, we analyzed the image degradation reason and fuzzy mechanism of image in haze. From the viewpoints of image restoration and image enhancement, an efficient and real-time image haze removal approach in view of the global dark-channel prior theory and image contract extending was proposed. Firstly, we used the global dark-channel prior method to remove the haze and fog, and then adopted the histogram equalization to enhance the contract and the brightness of images. The experimental results showed that the approach directly recovered a clear and quality haze-free image, obtained satisfactory visual effect. For the practical engineering applications, a high performance image acquisition, enhancement, haze removal and transmission platform was designed. It used the FPGA (field programmable gate array) as the core processer, and the algorithm proposed in this paper was implemented on the platform. The simulation result of timing sequence and the actual testing result were verified the reliability and validity of the method. Finally, through the actual test results indicated that the system can real-time, effectively enhance the image contrast and color definition of traffic video monitoring systems, thus it can improve its reliability, stability and the ability to cope with the bad weather such as the fog, haze and so on.

Potential for imaging in passive multistatic radar systems is investigated primarily in terms of illuminator type and coherency. A typical set of transmitters in the UHF and VHF bands based upon the local illuminators in the Columbus, Ohio region is presented to constitute a realistic passive imaging environment. A passive radar signal model is then developed and demonstrates one possible processing implementation for imaging across multiple distributed illuminators. From this, the spatial frequency representation of an airborne target traversing a common flight path is presented. This k-space formulation is assessed as a tool for predicting imaging performance, along with potential limitations of the approach for accurately modeling realistic imaging scenarios of multistatic passive radar systems. The vulnerability of multi-core processors is increasing due to tighter design margins and greater susceptibility to interference. Moreover, concurrent programming environments are the norm in the exploitation of multi-core systems. In this paper, we present an on-demand thread-level fault detection mechanism for multi-cores. The main contribution is on-demand redundancy, which allows users to set the redundancy scope in the concurrent code. To achieve this we introduce intelligent redundant thread creation and synchronization, which manages concurrency and synchronization between the redundant threads via the master. This framework was implemented in an emulation of a multi-threaded, many-core processor with single, in-order issue cores. It was evaluated by a range of programs in image and signal processing, and encryption. The performance overhead of redundancy is less than 11% for single core execution and is always less than 100% for all scenarios. This efficiency derives from the platform's hardware concurrency management and latency tolerance.
