High Level Synthesis for systems on Chip is a challenging way to cut off development time, while assuming a good level of performance. But the HLS tools are limited by the abstraction level of the description to perform some high level transforms. This paper evaluates the impact of such high level transforms for ASICs. We have evaluated recursive and non recursive filters for signal processing an morphological filters for image processing. We show that the impact of HLTs to reduce energy consumption is high : from x3.4 for one 1D filter up to x5.6 for cascaded 1D filters and about x3.5 for morphological 2D filters.

This paper presents a denoising method to preserve the image fine details and edges while effectively reducing the additive noise. The denoising mothod is performed in a two-phase process. The first process reduces noise in the corrupted image to a certain level by using a small filtering window to ensure that the image fine details and edges are still preserved. Then, further denoising is performed only in the smooth regions by using a bigger filtering window to remove the remaining noise more effectively. The use of two different filtering window sizes in the processes is important to achieve an optimum preservation of the image fine details and edges. The utilization of the mean deviation in the determination of the threshold value contributes to a more accurate division of smooth and nonsmooth regions. The performance of the proposed denoising method is investigated by the visual effects, method noise and objective image quality evaluation. simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method is effective for preserving the image fine details and edges while eliminating the noise. This method provides high performance for all evaluation criteria in comparison to the conventional approaches.

The purpose of this paper is to study a new method of de-noising images corrupted with additive white Gaussian noise. Based on the Chen-Mobius transform, the idea of modulation and demodulation in Chen-Mobius communication system is applied in the image de-noising. The evaluation results of the Chen-Mobius transform of some often-used waveforms are applied in the anti-noise of image. For image de-noising, the data is modulated on a modulation wave for some period and recorded by a certain means, then the data can be carried everywhere. To make such a processing, the Chen-Mobius inverse transformed functions act as the "modulation" waveforms and the receiving end is coherently "demodulated" by the often-used digital waveforms. simulation results are discussed in some detail. It shows that the new application has excellent performances that the digital image signals can be restored from intense Gaussian noise. Here, to prove the performance of the proposed method, the results are compared with other existent methods or algorithms such as hard and soft threshold based on wavelet. The simulation results on several testing images indicate that the proposed method outperforms the other methods in peak signal to noise ratio and keeps better visual in edges information reservation as well. The results also suggest that Chen-Mobius transform can achieve a better performance than the wavelet transform in image de-noising.

On the defective NR-PC flat lens for lightwave target detection and imaging

Influence of the defective cylinder air holes of negative-refraction photonic crystal (NR-PC) lens on the performance of lightwave target detection and imaging are studied with finite-difference time-domain method in the paper. Numerical simulations indicate that significant enhancement of the scattering signal can be obtained using the NR-PC flat lens;consequently, great improvement of the refocusing gain as well as the imaging resolution will be provided. We further study the effect on target detection and imaging using the defective NR-PC flat lens. Using dynamic scanning scheme, it is found that its focusing resolution is better than the non-defective lens. We can also get better resolution by appropriately decreasing the radius of the defective cylinder (R = 0.3a). In conclusion, appropriate radius of the defective cylinder (R = 0.3a) will provide better image resolution.

Mobile devices such as smart-phones and tablets are increasingly becoming the most important channel for delivering end-user Internet traffic especially multimedia content. One of the most popular use of these terminals is video streaming. In this type of application, video decoding is considered as the most compute and energy intensive part. Some specific processing units, such as dedicated Digital signal Processors (DSPs), are added to those devices in order to optimize the performance and energy consumption. In this context, the objective of this paper is to give a comprehensive and comparative study of the performance and energy consumption of video decoding application on embedded heterogeneous platforms containing a GPP and a DSP. To achieve this goal, a performance and energy characterization methodology for H. 264/AVC video decoding is proposed. This methodology considers a large set of video coding parameters and operating clock frequencies to reflect different execution scenarios ranging from low-quality video decoding on low-end mobile phones to high-quality video decoding on tablets. The obtained results revealed that the best performance-energy trade-off highly depends on the required video bit-rate and resolution. For instance, the GPP can be the best choice in many cases due to a significant overhead in DSP decoding which may represent 30% of the total decoding energy in some cases. Some explanations about the obtained performance and overheads are given. Finally, guidelines on which processing element to choose according to video properties are also proposed.

This paper presents a simulation environment for driver assistant systems-on-Chip (SoC). We implemented a cruise control and an adaptive cruise control using SystemC. The correct functionality of these driver assistant SoCs are evaluated using a Cadence virtual platform connected to a car simulator. Additionally, we show how easily the developed driver assistant systems can be transferred from the virtual to the real FPGA platform. We demonstrate the correct functionality by connecting the real FPGA platform to the car simulator. performance results for both approaches are presented.

Removal of noise is an important step in the image restoration process, but denoising of image remains a challenging problem in recent research associate with image processing. Denoising is used to remove the noise from corrupted image, while retaining the edges and other detailed features as much as possible. This noise gets introduced during acquisition, transmission & reception and storage & retrieval processes. In this paper, to find out denoised image the modified denoising method and the local adaptive wavelet image denoising method can be used. The noisy image is denoised by modified denoising method which is based on wavelet domain and spatial domain and the local adaptive wavelet image denoising method which is based on wavelet domain. In this paper, we have evaluated and compared performances of modified denoising method and the local adaptive wavelet image denoising method. These methods are compared with other based on PSNR (Peak signal to noise ratio) between original image and noisy image and PSNR between original image and denoised image. simulation and experiment results for an image demonstrate that RMSE of the local adaptive wavelet image denoising method is least as compare to modified denoising method and the PSNR of the local adaptive wavelet image denoising method is high than other method. Therefore, the image after denoising has a better visual effect. In this paper, these two methods are implemented by using MATLAB for denoising of image.

The Environmental Awareness for Sensor and Emitter Employment (EASEE) software models the impacts of terrain and weather on a diverse range of battlefield sensing systems. The goal is to provide mission planning tools that realistically capture complex environmental factors impacting sensor performance, yet are simple enough for users with little specialized training. This paper describes incorporation of infrared (IR) modeling into EASEE, and the subsequent challenges of supporting imaging sensors within a framework that had previously evolved primarily for non-imaging sensors, such as acoustic and seismic. The design requires independently interchangeable modules for signature generation, propagation, and signal processing. Sensor performance metrics, such as probability of detection, are characterized statistically rather than through simulation of actual images. Some key enhancements needed to support imaging sensors were: (1) geometric models for targets, (2) packaging of multiple attributes representing target image properties (radiance, projected area, and spatial spectrum), (3) explicitly distinguishing between signals for the background, target of interest, and nuisance targets, and (4) calculation of apparent temperature differences (as opposed to incoherent energy summation). Target signatures are generated using MuSES (Multi-Service Electro-optic Signature), whereas the IR background properties are generated using FASST (Fast All-Season Soil STrength) and numerical weather prediction models. Propagation is handled primarily with MODTRAN (MODerate resolution atmospheric TRANsmission), although simpler models such as a line-of-sight calculation can also be employed. The Johnson criteria were added to the available library of detection algorithms.

Terrain characteristics can significantly alter the quality of the results provided by the deployment methodology of large-scale wireless sensor networks. For example, transmissions between nodes that are heavily obstructed will require additional transmission power to establish connection between nodes. In some cases, heavily obstructed areas may prevent nodes from establishing a connection at all. Therefore, terrain analysis and classification of specific deployment areas should be incorporated in the methodology process for evaluation and optimization of the performance of wireless sensor networks upon deployment. Although there exists radio frequency (RF) models capable of modeling obstructions, such as vegetation, foliage, etc., automatic assignment of parameter values for these models may be troublesome, specifically in highly irregular deployments terrains, where proximity of poor and optimal conditions for signal propagation may be adjacent to each other. In these situations, parameter estimation for modeling terrain obstruction may result in overly optimistic or pessimistic results, causing characterizations or predictions that deviate from the true performance of the WSN once deployed. This paper presents the results of employing a support vector machine for automatic terrain classification. The approach can be used to automatically determine areas of high obstruction, which is essential to estimate obstruction parameters in simulations and enhancing the overall decision-making process during pre-deployment of large-scale and irregular deployment terrains.

Task-based assessments of image quality constitute a rigorous, principled approach to the evaluation of imaging system performance. To conduct such assessments, it has been recognized that mathematical model observers are very useful, particularly for purposes of imaging system development and optimization. One type of model observer that has been widely applied in the medical imaging community is the channelized Hotelling observer (CHO). In the present work, we address the need for reliable confidence interval estimators of CHO performance. Specifically, we observe that a procedure proposed by Reiser for interval estimation of the Mahalanobis distance can beapplied to obtain confidence intervals for CHO performance. In addition, we find that these intervals are well-defined with theoretically-exact coverage probabilities, which is a new result not proved by Reiser. The confidence intervals are tested with Monte Carlo simulation and demonstrated with an example comparing x-ray CT reconstruction strategies.
