Embedded real-time algorithms are often realized with dedicated hardware, exhibiting high production costs and low programming flexibility thereafter. For instance, semi-global matching for stereo image processing, including complex data flows, traditionally runs on customized hardware modules. Combining the processing and memory capabilities of multiple individual cores, emerging embedded multi-core technologies address these problems. However, considering concurrency issues (e. g., data races and lock contentions), parallel programming requires experienced programmers and technology-specific techniques (e. g., synchronization libraries) and tools (e. g., parallel profilers), which are often not available on embedded platforms. In this work, we introduce a parallel version of a semi-global matching algorithm and demonstrate within this case study runtime optimizations necessary to meet real-time requirements. We also show structured steps of the applied parallelization workflow, illustrating an efficient migration strategy to multi-core platforms using runtime information (e. g., profiles and hardware counters). Finally, to evaluate the resulting performance characteristics, we compare the runtime behavior of the parallel version running on a Freescale P4080 processor with reference values taken on an Intel i7, a field-programmable logic device, an extended general purpose processor and a GPU.

The purpose of this paper is to study a method of denoising images corrupted with additive white Gaussian noise. In this paper, the application of the time invariant discrete curvelet transform for noise reduction is considered. In curvelet transform, the frame elements are indexed by scale, orientation and location parameters. It is designed to represent edges and the singularities along curved paths more efficiently than the wavelet transform. Therefore, curvelet transform can get better results than wavelet method in image denoising. In general, image denoising imposes a compromise between noise reduction and preserving significant image details. To achieve a good performance in this respect, an efficient and adaptive image denoising method based on curvelet transform is presented in this paper. Firstly, the noisy image is decomposed into many levels to obtain different frequency sub-bands by curvelet transform. Secondly, efficient and adaptive threshold estimation based on generalized Gaussian distribution modeling of sub-band coefficients is used to remove the noisy coefficients. The choice of the threshold estimation is carried out by analyzing the standard deviation and threshold. Ultimately, invert the multi-scale decomposition to reconstruct the denoised image. Here, to prove the performance of the proposed method, the results are compared with other existent algorithms such as hard and soft threshold based on wavelet. The simulation results on several testing images indicate that the proposed method outperforms the other methods in peak signal to noise ratio and keeps better visual in edges information reservation as well. The results also suggest that curvelet transform can achieve a better performance than the wavelet transform in image denoising.

The full spatial covariance matrix of the multiple input multiple-output (MIMO) channel is an important quantity in channel modeling, communication system signal processing, and performance analysis, and therefore this matrix forms the heart of the research outlined in this dissertation. The work begins with an investigation of a generalized framework for computing the full MIMO spatial covariance based on the power angular spectrum (PAS) of the multipath field and the transmit and receive antenna element radiation patterns. For the case of uniform linear arrays and when the PAS clusters satisfy uniform, truncated Gaussian, or truncated Laplacian distributions, a series expansion is used to allow analytic evaluation of the required integrals in the formulation. The study also demonstrates the validity of some simplifying assumptions used to reduce the complexity of the covariance computation by applying the technique to ray tracing data as well as considers an analysis of the convergence properties of the series when computed using a finite number of terms. The insights and tools obtained from this covariance analysis are then used to develop a general approach for constructing MIMO transmit and receive beamforming vectors based on the full spatial covariance. While transmit and receive beamforming for the MIMO channel is a well-studied topic, when the transmit precoding is based on channel covariance information, developing near-optimal transmit and receive beamformers when the receiver is constrained to use linear processing remains an unsolved problem. This iterative beamforming algorithm presented here can accommodate different types of available channel information and receiver capabilities as well as either a sum power constraint or a per-antenna power constraint. This paper presents modelling and simulation of an underwater vehicle equipped with a collective and cyclic propeller (CCPP). A CCPP has been applied in helicopters and it generates both axial and side thrusts that move a helicopter in all directions. If axial and side thrusts of the CCPP are controlled as desired it is possible to apply the CCPP to an underwater vehicle. A new CCPP has been designed and fabricated for a torpedo shaped underwater vehicle. Captive experiments were conducted to quantify the performance of the CCPP. The paper reports recent development of an underwater vehicle equipped with the CCPP including design and fabrication of the experimental facility, conduct of experiments, modeling, performance of the CCPP and simulation of the vehicle propelled by the CCPP. © IFAC.

This paper presents opto-physiological (OP) modeling and its application in cardiovascular assessment techniques based on photoplethysmography (PPG). Existing contact point measurement techniques, i.e., pulse oximetry probes, are compared with the next generation non-contact and imaging implementations, i.e., non-contact reflection and camera-based PPG. The further development of effective physiological monitoring techniques relies on novel approaches to OP modeling that can better inform the design and development of sensing hardware and applicable signal processing procedures. With the help of finite-element optical simulation, fundamental research into OP modeling of photoplethysmography is being exploited towards the development of engineering solutions for practical biomedical systems. This paper reviews a body of research comprising two OP models that have led to significant progress in the design of transmission mode pulse oximetry probes, and approaches to 3D blood perfusion mapping for the interpretation of cardiovascular performance.

Terrain characteristics can significantly alter the quality of the results provided by the deployment methodology of large-scale wireless sensor networks. For example, transmissions between nodes that are heavily obstructed will require additional transmission power to establish connection between nodes. In some cases, heavily obstructed areas may prevent nodes from establishing a connection at all. Therefore, terrain analysis and classification of specific deployment areas should be incorporated in the methodology process for evaluation and optimization of the performance of wireless sensor networks upon deployment. Although there exists radio frequency (RF) models capable of modeling obstructions, such as vegetation, foliage, etc., automatic assignment of parameter values for these models may be troublesome, specifically in highly irregular deployments terrains, where proximity of poor and optimal conditions for signal propagation may be adjacent to each other. In these situations, parameter estimation for modeling terrain obstruction may result in overly optimistic or pessimistic results, causing characterizations or predictions that deviate from the true performance of the WSN once deployed. This paper presents the results of employing a support vector machine for automatic terrain classification. The approach can be used to automatically determine areas of high obstruction, which is essential to estimate obstruction parameters in simulations and enhancing the overall decision-making process during pre-deployment of large-scale and irregular deployment terrains.

High Level Synthesis for systems on Chip is a challenging way to cut off development time, while assuming a good level of performance. But the HLS tools are limited by the abstraction level of the description to perform some high level transforms. This paper evaluates the impact of such high level transforms for ASICs. We have evaluated recursive and non recursive filters for signal processing an morphological filters for image processing. We show that the impact of HLTs to reduce energy consumption is high : from ×3.4 for one 1D filter up to ×5.6 for cascaded 1D filters and about ×3.5 for morphological 2D filters.

This paper presents a simulation environment for driver assistant systems-on-Chip (SoC). We implemented a cruise control and an adaptive cruise control using SystemC. The correct functionality of these driver assistant SoCs are evaluated using a Cadence virtual platform connected to a car simulator. Additionally, we show how easily the developed driver assistant systems can be transferred from the virtual to the real FPGA platform. We demonstrate the correct functionality by connecting the real FPGA platform to the car simulator. performance results for both approaches are presented.
