A probabilistic framework based on a universal source coding for content-based image retrieval is proposed. By a multidimensional incremental parsing technique, which is an extension of the Lempel-Ziv incremental parsing algorithm, a given image is parsed into a number of variable-size rectangular blocks, called parsed representations. To achieve a semantically relevant pattern matching, we introduce a new similarity measure from the first- and second-order statistics of given image patches. Once the occurrence patterns of images in the corpus are analyzed, the term-document joint distribution is estimated by an aspect modeling technique under the assumption of latent aspects. To compare the performance of the proposed image retrieval framework based on the parsed representations, we implement a benchmark system based on the fixed-shape block representations trained by vector quantization. In addition to these two systems, we bring two content-based image retrieval systems into the performance evaluation. The experimental results on a database of 20,000 natural scene images demonstrate that the proposed image retrieval system significantly outperforms other existing and the benchmark systems.

As telecommunication systems grow in their complexity, research tasks demand quick , yet formal, ways to verify and benchmark. Among the steps to verify and analyze systems prior to the hardware in the loop step, remain the essential part of the research process. The paper presents the issues, results and the experience of using the HPC resources prior to the hardware in the loop verification on the reference designs for FSK and OFDM telecommunication systems, elaborated from the basic models, partitions, ending with the conclusions and implications on the final run time hardware implementation as HIL (hardware in the loop) concept.

In the virtual reality system, the major problem is the contradiction between the complexity and the immediacy toward scene models. This is the bottleneck to constrain the development of virtual reality application. This article introduces a new scene model based on adaptive update and the block scheduling strategy. The model applies the information of feature-points to classify the pixels in the complex scene, and then computes the update rate directed towards different pixels. Thereby, it can dynamically update according to the different scene.

The programming complexity of increasingly parallel processors calls for new tools to assist programmers in utilising the parallel hardware resources. In this paper we present a set of models that we have developed to form part of a tool which is intended for iteratively tuning the mapping of dataflow graphs onto manycores. One of the models is used for capturing the essentials of manycores that are identified as suitable for signal processing and which we use as target architectures. Another model is the intermediate representation in the form of a timed configuration graph, describing the mapping of a dataflow graph onto a machine model. Moreover, this IR can be used for performance evaluation using abstract interpretation. We demonstrate how the models can be configured and applied in order to map applications on the Raw processor. Furthermore, we report promising results on the accuracy of performance predictions produced by our tool. It is also demonstrated that the tool can be used to rank different mappings with respect to optimisation on throughput and end-to-end latency.

Recent data collections in video and signals collection such as Electro-optical/Infrared video, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), and Hyperspectral (HSI) data afford persistent surveillance. As the rate of the imagery (or other products such as 3D terrain modeling) becomes available, there is a greater need for data exploitation to support and augment user needs for situational awareness. The presentation will focus on (a) emerging technologies, (b) tools and processing needs for the user, and (c) developments for persistent surveillance performance analysis. Standard methods of image processing and imagery collection have been accelerated based on the availability of emerging products such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) technology, traffic monitoring systems, and security products. Each of these systems require coordination over varying resolutions, distributed networks, and graphical interfaces. The sensor coordination in the system network enables surveillance over persistent coverage. Persistent surveillance implies that the information processed is to report the results to a user. Surveillance systems can report situational awareness results of target tracks and identifications, anomalies, and target behaviors. Focus should be placed not only on the processing, but include an interactive user to control the collections, determine priorities for the video processing, and support exploration analysis. image processing, especially video, requires novel techniques to direct collections, process varying targets in complicated terrains, and efforts to evaluate the success. evaluation includes assessing the performance over varying operation conditions (i.e. sensors, targets, and environments) to include obscurations, compression, and non-continuous data streams. Ionosphere exploration is very important to improve the performance of space information systems, e.g. satellite navigation. A novel of spaceborne nadir-looking single input and multiple output (SIMO) HF-SAR is investigated, which has the capability to generate three-dimensional radar image for the topside ionospheric irregularities. The three-dimensional radar echo signal modeling is developed. The image formation algorithm for the antenna array typed SIMO HF-SAR system is proposed, based on modification of extend chirp scaling (ECS) algorithm. Computer simulation results illustrate the feasibility of new radar system and the validation of the signal processing algorithm. It has very good potential to be applied to the new generation ionospheric explorer developed in the future.

Obstacle recognition and location is one of the key techniques for the autonomous transmission line inspection robot. Considering the structure of 220kV double split transmission line, a method of obstacle recognition and location based on the monocular vision is proposed. First of all, capture the image located ahead of the inspection robot with camera, and recognize such obstacles as spacer, counterweight, etc in the image. Then build the geometric model of ranging using the position relation of obstacle's location center and camera, and calibrate the camera's intrinsic parameters. At last, put the parameters obtained by calibration into ranging formula to perform the ranging tests. The tests indicate that the method can recognize and locate the obstacles effectively.

The use of finite state Markov chains (FSMC) for the simulation of the Rayleigh channel has been generalized in the last years. Several parameters influence the construction of the chain. The chain can be defined in terms of the complex channel response, the envelope of the received signal or the signal to Noise Ratio. Moreover the partition method has to be selected among various options. This paper presents an evaluation of the FSMC, including a novel partition method that makes a uniform division of the density function of the desired signal and a comparison with other methods of generation of the fading channel. First and second order statistics and other performance parameters are examined in order to shed more light on the advantages and limitations of the Markov modeling.

One of the important tasks in sensor networks is classifying moving vehicles. Fusion of large amount of sensor measurements can improve network performance and reduce the consumption of sensor network resource. We study using continuous measurements of multiple sensor nodes to improve the classification performance by spatio-temporal fusion and fault detection. Time series decisions of single sensor node are aggregated to make a reliable classification estimation. A fusion center combines local classification decisions and evaluates the correctness of these decisions. A correctness status is sent back to each sensor node. Based on the status, sensor nodes can adjust their temporal fusion result. simulation results demonstrate the validity of our method.

performance of a newly proposed Concatenated Complete Complementary code (CCC) in CDMA systems is studied in this work. This code has good autocorrelation and cross correlation properties when compared with the existing unitary codes such as Gold codes, Walsh codes, Kasami codes etc. performance evaluation of the proposed CCC in DS-CDMA, MC-CDMA and STBC-CDMA systems in an AWGN channel is studied. The proposed CCC achieves a significant increase in the processing gain resulting in better Bit Error Rate performance. The proposed CCC is generated using the traditional Walsh Hadamard transform (WHT). The suitability and application of Haar transforms which are frequently applied in image processing domain are explored in the generation of CCC as a novelty in this work. The simulation results obtained shows a better performance for CCC generated using Haar transform. The proposed system can be applied in cognitive radio terminals to improve its performance.
