Joint radar communication system design based on filter bank multicarrier modulation scheme

Since orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals are sensitive to Doppler shift, OFDM signals with cyclic prefix (CP) not only reduce the communication rate but also result in symmetric pseudo peaks in the ambiguity function of the radar, which eventually lead to the degradation of the performance of the joint radar communication system (JRCS). In this study, a novel JRCS is proposed based on the filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) waveform for the inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging and communication system. On the one hand, FBMC waveforms are capable of low orthogonality between subcarriers, which can counter Doppler and multipath effects. On the other hand, FBMC waveforms do not require CP, so the false targets can be avoided and spectral efficiency can be improved. The influence of multipath effect and Doppler shift on FBMC waveform in an integrated system is analysed in detail, and a Doppler compensation algorithm suitable for FBMC-integrated waveform is proposed. The phase error caused by target motion can be iteratively compensated to obtain a well-focussed ISAR image. Finally, considering the ISAR image entropy after motion compensation as the evaluation metric, extensive simulation experiments verify the noise robustness and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Compared with the conventional OFDM and CP-OFDM schemes, the simulation verifies that the proposed waveform design and processing method has better performance in the ISAR imaging and communication integrated system.

Beamforming techniques have been widely used in the millimeter-wave (mm-wave) bands to mitigate the path loss of mm-wave radio links as narrow straight beams by directionally concentrating the signal energy. However, traditional mm-wave beam management algorithms usually require excessive channel state information (CSI) overhead, leading to extremely high computational and communication costs. This hinders the widespread deployment of mm-wave communications. By contrast, the revolutionary vision-assisted beam management system concept employed at base stations (BSs) can select the optimal beam for the target user equipment (UE), based on location information determined by machine learning (ML) algorithms applied to visual data, without requiring channel information. In this article, we present a comprehensive framework for a vision-assisted mm-wave beam management system, its typical deployment scenarios, and the specifics of the framework. Then, some of the challenges faced by this system and their efficient solutions are discussed from the perspective of ML. Next, a new simulation platform is conceived to provide both visual and wireless data for model validation and performance evaluation. Our simulation results indicate that vision-assisted beam management is indeed attractive for next-generation wireless systems.

Corner Detection via Scale-Space Behavior-Guided Trajectory Tracing

Existing curvature scale-space (CSS) methods detect corners by tracing the CSS trajectories from a determined high scale toward the lowest one. For those images with sophisticated details, such approach could often yield unsatisfactory corner detection results;i.e., miss-detected true corners (false negatives) and round corners (false positives). In this letter, these two fundamental problems are investigated. To tackle them, a novel CSS-based corner detector is proposed by incorporating our mathematically derived scale-space properties of the planar curves and corner points into the developed trajectory tracing algorithm, called the scale-space behavior-guided trajectory tracing (SBTT). In view of lacking a benchmark dataset with the ground truth, another contribution from our work is on the establishment of an augmented test image dataset, containing 147 test images with manually-labelled ground truth and their augmented images up to 62,328 images in total. Based on the ground truth, four commonly-used metrics are exploited to conduct corner detection performance evaluation. The obtained simulation results show that our proposed corner detector yields the highest F-score, when compared with that of nine state-of-the-art methods.

Residual stresses, mainly generated by mechanical processing and strengthening approaches, are known to impose significant influence on the performance of industrial structures. They usually exist as an undesirable source of fractures and failures. Furthermore, the nondestructive evaluation and calibration of residual stresses in the depth direction always stays a significant issue, especially for multilayer viscoelastic composites. Thus, this paper proposes the advancement of residual stress evaluation technology by detecting the variation of guided wave signal and impedance features under different stress conditions. The target structure for nondestructive evaluation task is a typical multilayer, viscoelastic composite shell of a solid rocket motor. By carrying out an in-depth theoretical analysis with Finite Element modeling (FEM), the sensing sensitivity of the probing ultrasonic wave characteristics are studied systematically. To monitor the residual stress state, a theoretical model is established by considering the stress gradient in each layer, indicating the current stress condition inside the testing object. Consequently, via the comprehensive consideration of transducer dimensions, center frequency, the most effective residual stress monitoring setup is established and the sensing signals are recorded by piezoelectric wafer active sensors (PWAS) placing on the object. Finally, different values of prestress are applied to the object, while the nonlinear constitutive law of the layered materials is implemented. The pattern between the sensing signal and the residual stress state is identified. simulation results show that significant nonlinear features such as higher harmonic generation are fully captured, which are related to the prestress conditions. The amplitude of sensing signals could provide indicative information for evaluating the residual stress state based on the acoustoelastic effects. Magnetic particle imaging (MPI) has emerged as a promising medical imaging technique known for its high sensitivity and high imaging speed, making real-time, in vivo imaging feasible. However, existing MPI systems often require multiple repetition measurements for signal denoising. Few repetitions may result in low-quality images with increased noise, whereas many repetitions compromise temporal resolution and may introduce significant motion artifacts in dynamic imaging. Therefore, to fully exploit the advantages of MPI in real-time imaging, it is crucial to reduce the repetition number while maintaining high-quality images. In this study, we introduced a novel deep-learning (DL)-based approach, the content-aware distillation network (CAD-Net), for accelerated MPI. The method reconstructs high-quality images by denoising noisy images, typically acquired with a limited number of repetitions (tens of milliseconds). CAD-Net incorporates a proposed multiscale content-aware (MCA) block to accurately model noise distribution and enhance denoising performance. In addition, we proposed an activation-mask-based distillation strategy to reduce model processing time, particularly important for real-time imaging. evaluation on a public real-world dataset, OpenMPI, and a simulation dataset, proved that CAD-Net outperformed existing methods in denoising performance and model efficiency. Compared to traditional methods based on multiple measurements, CAD-Net increased the frames per second (FPS) metric by approximately 70 times. Experiments on in-house data demonstrated the applicability of CAD-Net in MPI denoising in in vitro and in vivo imaging. CAD-Net improved image quality in real-time denoising with only a marginal increase in time cost. The code and data will be available at: https://***/shigen-StoneRoot/***.

The combination of digital twins and simulation, alongside with a control, command, and information system, provides a powerful hybrid environment for operational testing and performance assessment of security systems under realistic conditions without interrupting the operation of the test environment. This paper summarizes the use of OCUSIM, a hybrid Control, Command & Information (C2I) and simulation environment, and the associated requirements for 3D modeling, simulation and data exchange in cyber-physical threat assessment, multi-biometrics performance evaluation, and risk-based access control in different security environments. OCUSIM is based on the integration of the OCULUS C2I system with the iCrowd simulation environment along the lines of the digital twin concept. Other use cases and different application domains for OCUSIM are also discussed.

Visual impairments are a global health issue with profound socioeconomic ramifications in both the developing and the developed world. There exist ongoing research projects, that aim to investigate the influence of light in the perception of low vision individuals. But as of today, there is neither clear knowledge nor extensive data regarding the influence of light in low vision situations. This research will address these issues by introducing a methodology and a system to simulate visual impairments. A pipeline based on eye anatomy coupled with real-time image processing algorithms allows to dynamically simulate low vision specific characteristics of selected impairments in mixed reality. An original new approach based on massively parallelized processing combined with an efficient modeling of eye refractive errors aims to improve the accuracy of the low vision simulation.

As one of the main statistical characteristics of clutter, the clutter amplitude distribution plays an important role in the accurate modeling of spaceborne multi-channel radar signal as well as the subsequent, maritime radar target detection. In this paper, considering that the space-time adaptive processing (STAP) technology is usually applied to accomplish the main-lobe clutter rejection in a space-borne surveillance radar, the influence of different clutter amplitude distributions on STAP in a spaceborne multichannel radar system are analyzed. Firstly, a spaceborne multi-channel clutter model is established based on radar equation and clutter space-time steering vector. Then, Rayleigh distribution, Weibull distribution, lognormal distribution, K distribution, generalized Pareto distribution, and IG-CG distribution are used to fit the clutter amplitude. Finally, the effects of these clutter amplitude distributions on STAP performance are analyzed, respectively. The simulation results show that in the case of the same clutter power, the influence of different clutter amplitude distributions on STAP performance is approximately the same.

This paper presents a real-time implementation workflow of neural networks for autonomous driving tasks. The UNet structure is chosen for a road segmentation task, providing good performance for low complexity. The model is trained and validated using two datasets, KITTI (validation of the model with respect to state of art) and a local highway dataset (UHA dataset), collected by the laboratory research team. The performance of the model for road detection is evaluated using the F1 score metric. After a simulation validation on both sets, the model is integrated into a real vehicle through the RTMaps platform. The application is tested in real-time conditions, around the city, under various weather and light. Finally, the proposed model proves low complexity and good performance for real-time road detection tasks.
