modeling realistic driving behavior at signalized intersections is crucial for many applications, for instance to determine the traffic signal performance, to assess the effect of different control strategies, or to estimate traffic emissions. In these applications, often microscopic models are used to simulate the trajectory of each vehicle. Despite the possibility to model vehicles with great detail and at fractions of a second, speed, acceleration and deceleration characteristics are determined by parameters that are rarely calibrated using real data, and default parameters are often chosen. This is because collecting real vehicle trajectories near traffic signals is a challenging task. This paper presents a method to collect such dataset using image processing techniques. This methodology allows one to obtain vehicle trajectories near a signal control, and to measure individual vehicles speeds and accelerations at a microscopic level. We focus on the analysis the empirical distributions of speeds and accelerations observed with this unique dataset near and up to a few meters upstream of the stop-sign. We compared these distributions with the results of repeated simulations of two microscopic software programs, using default parameters. Some inconsistencies were found with this comparison, which suggests that the two analyzed microscopic simulation programs run with default parameters do not provide realistic results for this type of road sections. © 2008 IEEE.

This paper considers an alternative strategy to speed up the circuit simulation. This strategy considers characteristics of simulator users' behaviors and involves two techniques, the incremental simulation and simulation-on-demand (SOD). These techniques are implemented in an "Interactive simulation Environment" to dramatically accelerate the simulation speed in most practical cases. Also, a new model for incremental circuit simulation, the Incremental-Pseudo Circuit Method, and the method for SOD in relaxation-based algorithms are proposed. All presented methods have been implemented and really tested. Experimental results justify their excellent performance.

This paper presents a new deconvolution-based energy formulation for segmenting the image of stripe-based patterns projected by structured light systems. Our framework features an explicit modeling of the blurring introduced by the lens of a structured light system. This allows a significant improvement when working out of focus, a situation which occurs when performing depth measurement. The proposed iterative algorithm includes two steps: a deconvolution and a segmentation. For both steps, a geometrically plausible regularization term is used. It considers the projected displacement induced by the camera, projector and scene configuration. We validate our method using real imagery acquired using off-the-shelf equipment.

In the paper, we describe an agent-based system for simulation of electrical power network processes called Rice. The system consists of individual agents that communicate by means of a heterogeneous dynamic network. The prototype implementation of the system is based on open standards CORBA and KQML. The central topic of this paper is the description of the KQML layer of inter-agent communication in Rice and the designed optimizations needed for a scalable implementation of real-world power networks. We summarize the specification of KQML in general as well as the particular requirements of the power network simulation environment and offer justification of the proposed optimizations to the message content language.

This paper presents a performance evaluation of enhanced link adaptation techniques for MIMO-OFDM systems with imperfect feedback and channel estimation. In the link-level simulations, the channel modeling is based on MIMO channel measurements in line-of-sight and non line-of-sight scenarios. An adaptation process that switches between beamforming, diversity and multiplexing modes in combination with various modulation schemes is based on the effective SINR. Mutual information effective SINR mapping method is used as a part of the spatial and modulation scheme selection process due to its capability for estimating the error rate performance of large variety of MIMO channels accurately. simulation results show that a simple adaptive system which applies diversity and multiplexing modes attains good performance in realistic 2 times 2 MIMO channels. It is also shown that the imperfect feedback and channel estimation can have a significant impact on the system performance.

Generative models hold the promise of reducing the computational load and cost caused by directly simulating a real system. They are vital to the design and performance evaluation of error control schemes and high layer wireless communication protocols. Therefore, designing an efficient and accurate generative model is highly desirable. Moreover, the errors encountered in digital wireless channels exhibit correlation among them. This stimulates us to construct a Markovian based generative model with two embedded processes. The first process is dedicated to assembling error bursts with error-free bursts, whereas the second one is devoted to creating individual error bursts employing the maximum gap norm within error bursts. This premise is utilized in this paper to show that the resulting generative model can generate error sequences with desired bit correlations and is capable of statistically matching a descriptive model, derived from an enhanced general packet radio service (EGPRS) transmission system, regardless of the configuration of its error sequences.

Significant improvement to visual quality for real-time 3D graphics requires modeling of complex illumination effects diffuse lighting interactions. like soft-shadows, reflections, and The conventional Z-buffer algorithm driven GPU model does not provide sufficient support for this improvement. This paper targets the entire graphics system stack and demonstrates algorithms, a software architecture, and a hardware architecture for real-time rendering with a paradigm shift to ray-tracing. The three unique features of our system called Copernicus are support for dynamic scenes, high image quality, and execution on programmable multicore architectures. The focus of this paper is the synergy and interaction between applications, architecture, and evaluation. First, we describe the ray-tracing algorithms which are, designed to use redundancy and partitioning to achieve locality. Second, we describe the architecture which uses ISA specialization, multi-threading to hide memory delays and supports only local coherence. Finally, we develop an analytical performance model for our 128-core system, using measurements from simulation and a scaled-down prototype system. More generally, this paper addresses an important issue of mechanisms and evaluation for challenging workloads for future processors. Our results show that a single 8-core tile (each core 4-way multithreaded) can be almost 100% utilized and sustain 10 million rays/second. Sixteen such tiles, which can fit on a 240mm(2) chip in 22nm technology, make up the system and with our anticipated improvements in algorithms, can sustain real-time rendering. The mechanisms and the architecture can potentially support other domains like irregular scientific computations and physics computations.

In this paper we propose a new scheme for multi-hop forwarding in wireless networks. This new scheme is based on detection and forwarding of the received messages at the physical layer, without further processing at the higher layers. We derive a new expression for the symbol error rate in this proposed multi-hop detect-and-forward network by modeling the transmission line as a Markov Chain. The derived expression is quite general with respect to the (de) modulation scheme and the channel model. We compare the error rate performance of the proposed multi-hop detect-and-forward scheme with the earlier in the literature proposed multi-hop amplify and forward scheme. For the case of slow-varying flat-fading Rayleigh channels, our analytical and simulation results show that these two systems have surprisingly close performance at a wide range of signal to noise ratios.

In current wireless system performance evaluation, separate link and system level simulators are needed due to less computation complexity. The link-to-system (L2S) interface method to interconnect two simulators is essential and need careful definition. Exponential effective signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio mapping (EESM) is a typical L2S interface method suitable for evaluation of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing systems. When itpsilas used in simulation, all the sub-carriers for one user have to use the same modulation and coding scheme. In this paper, two modified L2S interface EESM methods are presented based on the idea that a high-level modulation symbol could be equivalently converted to several low-level modulation symbols with different reliability. As a result, usage of EESM can be extended to the situation that sub-carriers for one user use different modulation schemes.
