This paper describes a proposed software design process with model-based evaluation approach to high performance image processing algorithms for Embedded Vision systems (EVS). The resulted library (so called PfeLib) encloses software primitives which are optimized target specific to reach a high execution performance. However, due to the high computational complexity of most computer vision algorithms, realization of such applications on embedded systems is not a straight forward task. Therefore, the functional behavior of each algorithm was evaluated by the use of MATLAB Simulink. The main goal was to accelerate development and to improve the quality of the resulting algorithms and applications by systematic design, development and test. Target specific code generation was performed after modeling and simulation, where the generated code was evaluated and compared to the hand optimized code of the PfeLib. This resulted in Software In the Loop (SIL) simulation of the hand coded algorithms using MATLAB Simulink. Two Texas Instruments DSP Starter Kit (DSK) boards were used for evaluation and In-the-Loop testing. For instrumentation of the generated code, the used CPU cycles of the core part of the algorithm are counted as a measure for the mean execution time.

Multimedia content modeling, i.e., identification of semantically meaningful entities, is an arduous task mainly due to the fact that (a) humans perceive the content using high-level concepts and (b) the subjectivity of human perception, which often interprets the same content in a different way at different times. For this reason, an efficient content management system has to be adapted to current user's information needs and preferences through an on-line learning strategy based on users' interaction. One adaptive learning strategy is relevance feedback, originally developed in traditional text-based information retrieval systems. In this way, the user interacts with the system to provide information about the relevance of the content, which is then fed back to the system to update its performance. In this paper, we evaluate and investigate three main types of relevance feedback algorithms;the Euclidean, the query point movements and the correlation-based approaches. In the first case, we examine heuristic and optimal techniques which are based either on the weighted or the generalized Euclidean distance. In the second case, we survey single and multipoint query movement schemes. As far as the third type is concerned, two different ways for parametrizing the normalized cross-correlation similarity metric are proposed. The first scales only the elements of the query feature vector and called query-scaling strategy, while the second scales both the query and the selected samples (query-sample scaling strategy). All the examined algorithms are evaluated using both subjective and objective criteria. Subjective evaluation is performed by depicting the best retrieved images as response of the system to a user's query. Instead, objective evaluation is obtained using standard criteria, such as the precision-recall curve and the average normalized modified retrieval rank (ANMRR). Three-dimensional positron emission tomography is capable of yielding high system sensitivity and good reconstruction results due to incorporating the cross-plane coincidence events, however at the cost of excessive data volume and clinically impractical reconstruction time. The direct Fourier method (DIM) with its potential for fast reconstruction may be a promising solution. In this paper an easy to understand approach is presented, which provides a straightforward way to determine the highly non-uniformly distributed frequency samples in the recovered 3D object spectrum. In order to evaluate the performance of variously implemented DIM reasonably, an analytically accurate modeling method for the system probability matrix of PET is introduced, by means of which accurate projection data could be obtained. Thus the errors originating from the implemented DIM could be separated from the errors originating from contained noise within inaccurate projection data. simulation studies with a self-developed simulator are performed and presented to confirm the imposed assertions.

As the gate density on a single chip increases and the design complexity grows, the simulation and verification of complex hardware causes many problems and challenges at all levels of the design process for engineers. This growing system complexity also requires a quick simulation time to accelerate the design process. In that point, system design and validation tool based on C/C++ language delivers adequate levels of abstraction, hardware/software integration, and performance. This new tool named SystemC solves a growing incompatibility problem caused by the fact that hardware engineers use hardware description languages system engineers use their own programming tools. Considering the above-mentioned matters, a mounting drive has been built behind the SystemC language and modeling platform, based on C++, as the solution for representing functionality, communication, software, and hardware at various system levels of abstraction. In other words, SystemC library has been developed in order to enable system level design and Intelligent Property (IP) exchange at multiple abstraction levels, for systems containing both hardware and software components. This document demonstrates and evaluates the above-mentioned capabilities by applying the SystemC library in a conventional C++ development environment to build the system for a video streaming hardware device. Therefore, the main goal of the project is to show the adoption of SystemC library for the implementation and design verification of image processing hardware. The proposed design is a special device, which accepts real time streaming video inputs at the rate of 30 frames-per-second. The device is expected to convert the 8-bit gray-scale digital image into binary image using a pre-set threshold value. This document includes the simulation results and performance evaluation with the SystemC implementation of the proposed design.

As future manned and robotic space explorations missions involve more complex systems, it is essential to verify, validate, and optimize such systems through simulation and emulation in a low cost testbed environment. The goal of such a testbed is to perform detailed testing of advanced space and ground communications networks, technologies, and client applications that are essential for future space exploration missions. We describe the development of new technologies enhancing our Multi-mission Advanced Communications Hybrid Environment for Test and evaluation (MACHETE) that enables its integration in a distributed space communications testbed. MACHETE combines orbital modeling, link analysis, and protocol and service modeling to quantify system performance based on comprehensive considerations of different aspects of space missions. It can simulate entire networks and can interface with external (testbed) systems. The key technology developments enabling the integration of MACHETE into a distributed testbed are the Monitor and Control module and the QualNet IP Network Emulator module. Specifically, the Monitor and Control module uses web services interface mechanism to centralize the management of testbed components. The QualNet IP Network Emulator module allows externally generated network traffic to be passed through MACHETE to experience simulated network behaviors such as propagation delay, data loss, orbital effects and other communications characteristics, including entire network behaviors. We report a successful integration of MACHETE with a space communication testbed modeling a lunar exploration scenario. © 2006 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.

image Enhancement is a wide area with its applications in different domains. image Enhancement is a computational intensive task; in which processing involves applying a specific function repetitively. One solution to carry out these computational intense tasks is to use a general purpose microprocessor or Digital signal processor. But these implementations are sequential, with less on-chip memory for buffering, so we require external memory for buffering. Fetching data from this external memory require certain clock cycles which effects system performance. Also these systems require glue logic for their operations. We can reduce this glue logic and speed up our operations using Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs). But main problem with ASICs are they require large ' time to market and initial investments are high. Before developing an ASIC we require to prototype our design. Field programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) prove to be a better solution for rapid prototyping. FPGAs are reprogrammable, have large number of logic cells suitable for implementing image enhancement applications. We can explore the parallelism and pipelining feature of FPGA. The objective of this dissertation is design, modeling, simulation and synthesis of various image Enhancement techniques. The dissertation aims in developing a prototype of image enhancement processor. Initially, different Algorithms are studied and their hardware circuits are realized. Then these hardware blocks are coded using a suitable Hardware Descriptive language and simulated in a simulator to verify their functionality. Then this hardware logic is modeled in Matlab Simulink using Xilinx System generator Blockset and synthesized on Spartan3E xc3s500e-4fg320 FPGA chip. Then using hardware co-simulation feature of Spartan-3E starter kit, the results obtained in software and hardware simulations (i. e. on FPGA kit), are validated.

Recent advancements in mixed hardware-software modeling platforms have simplified the process of concurrently modeling complex algorithms in hardware while considering the software generation in an integrated environment. To efficiently facilitate design space exploration for RISC extensible processors, it is imperative to use a tightly coupled hardware-software co-design and modeling effort that also maintains the flexibility for exploring other types of microarchitectures. We have introduced a simulation framework using a software-oriented design methodology that can be adopted to model the software and hardware components in a reconfigurable co-processor. Experiments on some commonly used DSP and image processing tasks show that hardware-software trade-offs in the various models can be efficiently analyzed during the initial design phase.

Some of authors proposed the blind equalization algorithm for communication systems. The algorithm has higher reliability of the recovered signals and faster convergence rate of the algorithm. In this method, we control a parameter included Sato cost function using both outputs of equalizer and decision device. However, this method can apply only binary code system. A channel simulator is essential in the development and accurate performance evaluation of wireless systems. This paper presents an improved hardware implementation of a Rayleigh fading channel simulator that uses only 13% of the Xilinx Virtex2P XC2VP100-6 field-programmable gate array (FPGA) and operates at up to 210 MHz, generating 210 million accurately distributed and correlated complex fading coefficients per second. Our fading channel simulator is 506 times faster than a software-based simulator written in C running on a 3.4-GHz Pentium 4 processor. The fading channel simulator layout in 90-nm CMOS technology occupies 967 mum 2 of silicon area when the operating rate target is 500 MHz

In this paper, we investigate and compare the performances of minutia based system which relies on the orientation field and ridge frequency estimation, and correlation filter based fingerprint verification systems. simulation results show that equal error rate (EER) of the minutia based system is around 1.7% which is much smaller than the EER obtained for correlation filters. This suggests that minutia based system is more robust to plastic distortion inherent in the fingerprint images
