In this paper, several state-of-the-art noise reduction algorithms are ranked using both subjective evaluation and 20 objective measures proposed in the literature. The goal of the study was to find the objective quality measure that best relates to the subjective assessment for noise reduction. A measurement set-up comprising a simulation of a TV-transmission channel has been used to provide a realistic assessment of the performance in TV-applications of algorithms reducing Gaussian white noise. Ranking results are given for the subjective evaluation and all objective measures. The correlation between the subjective evaluation results and the objective measures is found to be very low. Results show that even a combination of objective measures only approximates the subjective assessment of the quality of noise reduction algorithms to a limited extent. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. Modern day DVD processors are classic examples of system-on-chip (SoC) designs that grew in ail incremental fashion over a long period of development. performance evaluation of such systems consisting of multiple heterogeneous processors at the architectural level is a fairly complex and time-consuming effort. The traditional approach of using cycle accurate simulators is, slow in simulation speed and is difficult in terms of integrating the SoC model. Also, in many instances, such models are, not necessary since certain architectural features such as the processor interconnection and routing networks or memory system interfaces are the ones to be determined in early design stages. In this paper, we look at performance evaluation of such an SoC for DVD processing by means of transaction level models using SystemC.

Dynamic collection/sensor management (DSM) systems require the ability to plan in advance deployment and use of platforms/sensors to optimally locate and identify time critical and time sensitive ground targets (TST) at some future anticipated time. In order to provide long-term planning, track fusion based initial target kinematic and classification state estimates can be used to initialize long-term location prediction modeling (LPM) algorithms of target movement along lines-of-communications (LOC) networks given knowledge of target and LOC characteristics. In order to optimize the selection of the planned sensor mix for the anticipated target location, a fusion performance model (FPM) can be used to predict the best combination of available platforms/sensors. Given the outcome of long-term prediction and the best kinematic and classification state estimates from the fusion performance model, a ranked set Figures-of-Merits (FOMs) is developed for the DSM system focusing on optimizing target position and classification accuracies. The methodology, development, implementation and open/closed loop simulation concepts for FOMs evaluation are discussed.

Wavelet Transform has attracted much of the research attention for its ability to analyse rapidly changing transient signals. Any application using the Fourier Transform can be formulated using Wavelet Transform. Like Fourier Analysis, Wavelet Analysis deals with expansion of functions in terms of a set of Basis Functions. But unlike Fourier Transform, Wavelet Transform expands the functions in terms of Wavelets, which are generated by translation and dilation of a fixed function called the Mother Wavelet. The wavelets obtained in this way have got special scaling properties. These have got incredible versatility of applications in pattern recognition, transient signal analysis and image processing. The present work deals with the mathematical formulation of Wavelet Transform Algorithm and design of its signal flow graph. The flow graph has been designed keeping in view its application to the parallel processing domain. The mathematical treatment of the Wavelet Transform Algorithm has been carried out for Filter Analysis. The computational complexity has been estimated in single processor environment. The paper has made an attempt to formalise the Wavelet Transform for Parallel processing Environment. In this paper, the flow graph of the Wavelet Transform has been analysed and modelled on Star Graph Architecture. The decomposition and ordering has been computed for efficient execution of the algorithm. The necessary theory has been developed for mapping the Task Assignment Graph to the processing Nodes of Star Graph. The general mathematical formulation has been generated for a varying complexity Wavelet with a variable node Star Graph. Various performance parameters like Speedup, Efficiency and Cost Effectiveness have been computed. The results are given as various closed form formulae.

In this paper, we propose a novel spatial fading simulator to evaluate the performance of an array antenna and show its spatial stochastic characteristics by computer simulation, based on parameters verified by experimental data. We introduce a cavity-excited circular array (CECA) as a fading simulator that can simulate realistic mobile communication environments. To evaluate an antenna array, two spatial stochastic characteristics are necessary. The first one is the fading phenomenon and the second is the angular spread (AS) of the incident wave. The computer simulation results on the two aspects, fading and AS, show that CECA works well as a spatial fading simulator for performance evaluation of antenna arrays. We first present the basic structure, features and design methodology of CECA, and then show computer simulation results on spatial stochastic characteristics, based on experimental parameters. The results confirm that CECA is a useful tool to evaluate the performance of antenna arrays.

The availability of synthetic realistic data enables design optimization, algorithm evaluation and verification of any digital system where a significant amount of digital signal processing is performed. The evolution of positron emission tomography cameras towards continuous sampling of individual position-sensitive photomultiplier anodes with processing algorithms implemented on digital programmable logic devices creates a new framework where new approaches to the gamma-event detection are possible. We have developed a system model of the acquisition chain, including multi-layer phoswich, photomultiplier, front-end analog electronics, data acquisition and data processing. This processing includes estimation algorithms for the most relevant event parameters: energy, layer-of-interaction, time picking-off and event location. The selected simulation platform couples gently to digital hardware simulation tools, in such a way that implemented models may generate real-like stimuli for the digital system under development. The modeling of the whole front-end electronics enables deeper understanding and tuning of different system trade-offs and provides a rapid and soft transition between specification and hardware development

Consider a communication system in which a filtered and quantized signal is sent over a channel with erasures and (potentially) additive noise. Linear MMSE estimation is achieved in such a system by Kalman filtering. Allowing any Markov erasure process and any Markov-state jump linear signal generation model, it is shown that the estimation performance at the receiver can be computed as a deterministic optimization with linear matrix inequality (LMl) constraints rather than a pseudorandom simulation. Furthermore, in contrast to the case without erasures, the filtering in the transmitter should not necessarily be MMSE prediction (whitening); a procedure is given to find a locally optimal prefilter. The main tools are recent LMI characterizations of asymptotic state estimation error covariance and output estimation error variance for discrete-time jump linear systems in which the discrete portion of the system state is a Markov chain. As another application of this framework, a novel analysis and optimization of a "streaming" version of multiple description coding based on subsampling is outlined.

The emergence of several radio technologies, such as Bluetooth and EEEE 802.11b, operating in the 2.4GHz unlicensed ISM frequency band, may lead to signal interference and result in significant performance degradation when devices are colocated in the same environment. The main goal of this paper is to evaluate the effect of mutual interference on the performance of Bluetooth and IEEE 802.11b systems. We develop a simulation framework for modeling interference based on detailed MAC and PHY models.
