Growing gate density, availability of embedded multipliers and memory, and integration of traditional processors are some of the key advantages of Platform FPGAs. Such FPGAs are attractive for implementing compute intensive signal processing kernels used in wired as well as wireless mobile devices. However, algorithm design using Platform FPGAs, with energy dissipation as an additional performance metric for mobile devices, poses significant challenges. In this paper, we propose an algorithm designer’s workbench that addresses the above issues. The workbench supports formal modeling of the signal processing kernels, evaluation of latency, energy, and area of a design, and performance tradeoff analysis to facilitate optimization. The workbench includes a high-level estimator for rapid performance estimation and widely used low-level simulators for detailed simulation. Features include a confidence interval based technique for accurate power estimation and facility to store algorithm designs as library of models for reuse. We demonstrate the use of the workbench through design of matrix multiplication algorithm for Xilinx Virtex-II Pro. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

performance evaluation of cellular systems that take advantage of antenna arrays at both ends of the link must reflect not only the link level aspects, but also the effects related to the entire system. System level simulation on the other hand can not contain all the link level processing, as this would be computational prohibitive. In this paper we analyze a possible interlace between the link level and the system level in the case of frequency selective channels based on the output of a space-time MMSE equalizer. We derive the theoretical signal to interference and noise ratio (SINR) at the output of the equalizer and show how this measure can be used to approximate the performance of the link. We show how the SINR can be translated in bit error rate (BER) and throughput, given as example the high speed downlink packet access system, and validate with computer simulations the accuracy of the interface.

This paper reports the setup of a driving system, whereby an operator can remote control a toy car via a steering wheel and an accelerating paddle. A wireless-linked mini-camera attached to the front of the car allows the operator to see the front view of the vehicle on a monitor. The system simulates the situation of an automobile, and the operator can "drive" the car through a set of scaled-down roadways. The setup is aimed at investigating the issues of modeling, evaluating, integrating, and simulating human driving skills. Preliminary experiments and results are presented.

This paper presents two SOM-like algorithms that are extended from two alternative soft competition algorithms namely maximum likelihood competitive learning (MLCL) and fuzzy competitive learning (FCL). simulation results on the topographic map formation are presented and a possible application of such algorithms for data transmission is elucidated. It is observed that under certain circumstances, the performance of these SSOM algorithms in a vowel data transmission problem can be comparable to and sometimes even better than that of using SOM.

This article dealth with a complex problem of textile quality control by the means of computer vision using advanced digital signal and image processing tools. An investigation into a computer vision solution to quality inspection of textiles suggested a texture analysis approach. Since each texture analysis method presents a different potential for analysis of textured textile images, a large number of standard approaches from this category was examined. By considering their advantages and potential for successful flaw detection performance in homogeneous and jacquard textiles, six standard texture analysis techniques were identified for further investigation. A comprehensive examination and evaluation of these chosen techniques resulted. Normalised cross-correlation and SCLC approaches were identified as suitable candidates for real-time flaw detection in textiles with homogeneous structure. Inspection of jacquard textiles, however, presents a problem of greater complexity, the solution to which has not as yet been documented in the literature. To address this problem, a need for the application of a com-prehensive cojoint spatial-spatial frequency approach was identified. A Gabor filter approach was chosen as a suitable representative of this class of techniques. This research then successfully applied optimised 2-D Gabor filters to the textile flaw detection problem and provided a further support of their suitability for this task. A novel optimised 2-D Gabor algorithm presented in this study is an automatic solution which is adaptable to detect a large variety of textile flaw types, both structural and tonal.

In the hybrid Molecular Dynamics (MD)/Brownian Dynamics (BD) algorithm for simulating the long-time, nonequilibrium dynamics of receptor-ligand interactions, the evaluation of the force autocorrelation function can be computationally costly but fortunately is highly amenable to multimode processing methods. In this paper, taking advantage of the computational grid's large-scale computational resources and the nice characteristics of grid-based Monte Carlo applications, we developed a grid-based receptor-ligand interactions simulation application using the MD/BD algorithm. We expect to provide high-performance and trustworthy computing for analyzing long-time dynamics of proteins and protein-protein interaction to predict and understand cell signaling processes and small molecule drug efficacies. Our preliminary results showed that our grid-based application could provide a faster and more accurate computation for the force autocorrelation function in our MD/BD simulation than previous parallel implementations.

Systolic opportunities for multidimensional data streams

Portable image processing applications require an efficient, scalable platform with localized computing regions. This paper presents a new class of area I/O systolic architecture to exploit the physical data locality of planar data streams by processing data where it falls. A synthesis technique using dependence graphs, data partitioning, and computation mapping is developed to handle planar data streams and to systematically design arrays with area I/O. simulation results show that the use of area I/O provides a 16 times speedup over systems with perimeter I/O. performance comparisons for a set of signal processing algorithms show that systolic arrays that consider planar data streams in the design process are up to three times faster than traditional arrays.

This study addresses the problem of the objective performance evaluation of image retrieval systems. Considering the color feature, a tool for synthetic image databases generation is proposed. This allows to control the number and location of the dominant colors in the Lab space and provides also their spatial coherency. It is then possible to sort exactly the images for the color feature. We also propose a new similarity measure to compare images described by the color feature. Based on the assumption of a Gaussian distribution for each dominant color, each image is modeled by the sum of these Gaussian distributions. The similarity measure performs a Kullman's distance between two modeled distributions. The objective performance evaluation based on the synthetic database is done for comparing our image retrieval system (IMALBUM) which uses the new similarity measure and MPEG7 approach. Experiments on MPEG7 database are also presented as a subjective evaluation and discussed.

In many applications such as construction, manufacturing, ground robotic vehicles, and rescue operations, there are many issues that necessitate the capability of transmitting digital video and that such transmissions should be performed wirelessly and in an ad-hoc manner. Recently, we proposed an ad-hoc, cluster-based, multihop network architecture for video communications. For implementation, the IEEE 802.11 FHSS wireless LAN system using 2GFSK modulation has been deployed. To enhance the overall throughput rate for higher quality video communications, we present a performance evaluation of the IEEE 802.11 FHSS when 4GFSK modulation option is selected. Unfortunately, the 2 Mb/s system utilizing 4GFSK modulation is not very efficient in terms of RF range. Therefore, to improve its performance for multihop applications, a combination of diversity and non-coherent Viterbi based receiver is considered. For the video transmission part, we have considered a bitstream splitting technique together with a packet-based error protection strategy to combat packet drops under multipath fading conditions. Finally, the paper presents the simulation results, including the effects of the receiver design and diversity on the quality of the received video signals.
