In this paper, we present a detailed analysis of the MediaBench benchmark suite. MediaBench consists of a number of popular embedded applications for communications and multimedia. MediaBench performance characteristics were examined by running MediaBench under the SimpleScalar simulation environment. Characteristics such as instruction mix, branch prediction accuracy, cache hit rates, memory usage, and integer bit utilization were considered. This information can be of use in designing embedded systems targeted at multimedia applications.

This paper describes a testbed which simulates a third generation Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) wireless link. The designer of next generation wideband CDMA systems has the choice of a wide array of advanced signalprocessing algorithms and a variety of operating environments. The Rice testbed is a tool to evaluate these design options and trade-offs in different system scenarios. The backbone of this testbed is a wireless CDMA multiuser link built using Simulink and Matlab. An efficient method of system modeling is used to accelerate the simulations. The testbed also uses a method for rapid prototyping of algorithms and DSP-based simulation acceleration for new algorithm complexity and performanceevaluation.

This paper presents a three-phase shunt active power filter controlled by three different control strategies using a digital signal processor (DSP). The control techniques analyzed and compared are: sliding mode control (SMC), proportional-integral control (PI), and sliding mode control with proportional-integral controller (SMC-PI). Analysis and modeling of the shunt active power filter as well as simulation and experimental results are presented. The results show that the SMC controller has a better performance than PI and SMC-PI, allowing a low THD in the AC mains current and a fast transient response.

This paper presents a study of the use of PVM (parallel virtual machine) to improve the speed of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imageprocessing. PVM is a software system that enables a user-configurable pool of heterogeneous computers to be used as a virtual machine. The SAR processing test software performed simplified range and azimuth compression on simulated SAR images of a point target. Results show that PVM improves the time taken to process a SAR image once system factors are optimised.

A new algorithm for effectively removing impulsive noise in digital images is proposed. Our computationally efficient algorithm first classifies corrupted pixels and then performs median filtering only for them. We introduce new efficiency factors to compare the performance of the noise detection algorithms. simulation results show that the proposed algorithm performs better than the existing methods in terms of both objective and subjective evaluations.

The very high integration rate and the increasing complexity of digital hardware architectures and embedded applications lead designers to search for new tools and methods. In order to reduce the time-to-market it becomes essential to allow designers to evaluate performances of a given application with the targetted architecture very soon in the design phase. So we have decided to build a modelling simulation environment in order to evaluate the requisite number of cycles for processing a given application with a simple model of a digital hardware architecture. Then, our main objective and the greatest part of our work is to describe this environment with an example based on the Pine DSP and some classical digital signalprocessing applications: FIR, FFT butterfly, Viterbi's Butterfly.

Dynamic positron emission tomography (PET) has opened the possibility of quantifying physiological processes within the human body. On performing dynamic PET studies, the tracer concentration in blood plasma has to be measured, and acts as the input function for tracer kinetic modelling. In this paper, we propose an approach to estimate physiological parameters for dynamic PET studies without the need of taking blood samples. The proposed approach comprises two major steps. First, a wavelet denoising technique is used to filter the noise appeared in the projections. The denoised projections are then used to reconstruct the dynamic images using filtered backprojection. Second, an eigen-vector based blind deconvolution technique is applied to the reconstructed dynamic images to estimate the physiological parameters. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed approach, we carried out a Monte Carlo simulation using the fluoro-deoxy-2-glucose model, as applied to tomographic studies of human brain. The results demonstrate that the proposed approach can estimate the physiological parameters with an accuracy comparable to that of invasive approach which requires the tracer concentration in plasma to be measured.

In this paper, an online synchronous generator parameter identification procedure is presented using large disturbance responses and the extended least square estimation algorithm. It was shown that the entire process of signal generation, injection and response measurement can be performed in real time using an industrial personal computer system. In this study, the nonlinear saturated machine model parameters are identified under different operating conditions. Furthermore, from these identified parameters, the parameter sub-models are identified using the least square estimation algorithm under a wide range of operating conditions. This identification technique is carried out on a practical power system to estimate the parameters of a synchronous machine rated at 125 MW. simulation studies are performed to validate the accuracy of the identified machine model including parameter sub-model.

It is important to take into account still more perceptual characteristics of the human auditory, visual, tactile systems, as well as combinations of these systems, it is also highly desirable to acquire methods for analysing the main perceptual parameters, which constitute the input for the total quality assessment. A framework is suggested for assessing the quality of modalities and their combinations.

Considering that the application of the direct-sequence slotted spread ALOHA communications system to the access/control channel is effective in communications systems with traffic channels operating at CDMA mode, the spread ALOHA communications system is discussed in terms of the system configuration and throughput performance. The throughput performance of the spread ALOHA communications system using a unified spread code is derived by means of two methods. One is based on the simulation of demodulation algorithm, and the other is based on the approximation by simple modeling. The modeling consists of two main conditions depending on the collision of packet signals. It becomes obvious from quantitative evaluation that the approximated results coincide with the simulated results, and that the modeling is very effective to evaluate the throughput performance of the spread ALOHA communications system.
