CASE (computer aided software engineering) tools based on the Specification and Description Language (SDL) are nowadays serving increasingly as the engineering platforms for rapid application development (RAD). This paper presents some general concepts for achieving the modelling and simulation of B-ISDN signalling protocols on such an SDL'92 engineering platform (SDL'92 toolset). The designed simulation model is completely specified in SDL'92. The corresponding discrete-event simulator is automatically generated from the SDL'92 specifications. Using the abstract data types (ADT) of SDL'92, the queuing models can be coded within SDL'92 specifications for performance modelling. To make the most of the SDL'92 engineering platform, a working paradigm for developing and verifying a discrete-event simulator is proposed.

In this paper we propose a modeling of an acquisition line made up of a CCD camera, a lens and a frame grabber card. The purpose of this modeling is to simulate the acquisition process in order to obtain images of virtual objects. The response time has to be short enough to permit interactive simulation. All the stages are modelised: in the first phase, we present a geometric model which supplies a point to point transformation that provides, for a space point in the camera field, the corresponding point on the plane of the CCD sensor. The second phase consists of modeling the discrete space which implies passing from the continuous known object view to a discrete image, in accordance with the different origin of the contrast loss. In the third phase, the video signal is reconstituted in order to be sampled by the frame grabber card. The practical results are close to reality when compared to image processing. This tool makes it possible to obtain a short computation time simulation of a vision sensor. This enables interactivity either with the user or with software for the design/simulation of an industrial workshop equipped with a vision system. It makes testing possible and validates the choice of sensor placement and image processing and analysis. Thanks to this simulation tool, we can control perfectly the position of the object image placed under the camera and in this way, we can characterise the performance of subpixel accuracy determining methods for object positioning.

Segmentation of statistical texture images using the metric space theory

This paper proposes a new segmentation algorithm for statistical texture using the metric space concept. The coordinate space, region space and texture image space are modeled in terms of the metric space, a special form of the topology space. A texture segmentation technique based on the metric space modeling is proposed and its multiresolution extension is also presented. To show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, its segmentation results for synthesized statistical texture images and a real aerial image are compared with those of the conventional methods such as the Gauss-Markov random field (GMRF) method and the spatial gray level difference method (SGLDM). Computer simulation with several statistical texture images shows that the proposed algorithm gives better performance than the conventional ones, based on the subjective evaluation and the quantitative measure. Also its multiresolution extension is observed to be effective.

Source localization in acoustic waveguides involves a multidimensional search procedure, In this paper, we propose a new algorithm in which the search in the depth direction is replaced by polynomial rooting. Using the proposed algorithm, range and depth estimation by a vertical array requires a 1-D search procedure. For a 3-D localization problem (i.e., range, depth, and direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation), the algorithm involves a 2-D search procedure. Consequently, the proposed algorithm requires significantly less computation than other methods that are based on a brute-force search procedure over the source location parameters. In order to evaluate the performance of the algorithm, an error analysis is carried out, and Monte-Carlo simulations are performed, The results are compared with the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) and to the maximum likelihood (ML) simulation performance, The algorithm is shown to be efficient, while being computationally simpler than the ML or the Bartlett processors. The disadvantage of the algorithm is that its SNR threshold occurs in lower SNR than in the ML algorithm.

The discrete cosine transform (DCT) is well known for its highly efficient coding performance and is widely used in many image compression applications, However, in low bit rate coding, it produces undesirable block artifacts that are visually not pleasing, In addition, in many practical applications, faster computation and easier VLSI implementation of DCT coefficients are also important issues, The removal of the block artifacts and faster DCT computation are therefore of practical interest. In this paper, we investigate a modified DCT computation scheme, to be called the subband DCT (SB-DCT), that provides a simple, efficient solution to the reduction of the block artifacts while achieving faster computation, We have applied the new approach for the low bit rate coding and decoding of images, simulation results on real images have verified the improved performance obtained using the proposed method over the standard JPEG method.

In this paper, several classes of parallel, synchronous adders are surveyed based on their power, delay and area characteristics. The adders studied include the linear time ripple carry and manchester carry chain adders, the square-root time carry skip and carry select adders, the logarithmic time carry lookahead adder and its variations, and the constant time signed-digit and carry-save adders, Most of the research in the last few decades has concentrated on reducing the delay of addition, With the rising popularity of portable computers, however, the emphasis is on both high speed and low power operation. In this paper we adopt a uniform static CMOS layout methodology whereby short circuit power minimization is used as the optimization criterion, The relative merits of the different adders are evaluated by performing a detailed transistor-level simulation of the adders using HSPICE, Among the two's complement adders, a variation of the carry lookahead adder, called ELM, was found to have the best power-delay product, Based on the results of our experiments, a large adder design space is formulated from which an architect can choose an adder with the desired characteristics.

This paper describes a design environment called ADEPT which enables designers to assess the dependability of systems early in the design process using behavioral simulation models. ADEPT is an interactive graphical design environment which allows design and analysis of systems throughout the entire design cycle. ADEPT supports functional verification, performance evaluation, and dependability analysis early in the design cycle from a single model in order to dramatically reduce design cycles and deliver products on schedule. In this paper, ADEPT is applied to the design of a distributed computer system used to control trains. The design environment has also been used in other applications including digital signal processing, communication protocol modeling, fault tolerant parallel processing, and hardware/software co-design. Two distinct experiments were run to illustrate dependability evaluation using behavioral simulation models. The first experiment evaluates the effectiveness of using a simple (7,4) Hamming code for protecting information in a distributed system. The second experiment evaluates the effectiveness of a watchdog monitor whose role is to detect hardware and software errors in the distributed system. The experiments illustrate dependability analysis using behavioral simulation models. The first simulation demonstrates estimation of the error coverage of the (7,4) code and the mean time to hazardous event (MTTHE). The second experiment demonstrates functional verification and controllability of behavioral simulation experiments by testing the response of a watchdog monitor design to rare malicious events. An important capability demonstrated by this experiment is the ability to selectively force events in a simulation model that may not otherwise be observed in a lifetime of testing a hardware model.

We analyze the performance of linear minimum mean squared error (LMMSE) estimate-based multiuser detector for CDMA communication systems. Through numerical evaluation and computer simulations, we also compare the performance of the LMMSE detector and the adaptive bootstrap multiuser detector. Our analysis and simulations show that even though these two detectors were proposed based on different optimization criteria, they exhibit approximately equal performance in multiuser CDMA communications applications.

We present a novel algorithm for calculating the running maximum or minimum value of a one-dimensional sequence over a sliding data window. The new algorithm stores a pruned ordered list of data elements that have the potential to become maxima or minima across the data window at some future time instant. This algorithm has a number of advantages over competing algorithms, including balanced computational requirements for a variety of signals and the potential for reduced processing and storage requirements for long data windows. We show through both analysis and simulation that for an L-element running window, the new algorithm uses approximately three comparisons and O(log L) memory locations per output sample on average for i.i.d. signals, independent of the signal distribution.

This paper proposes a new approach to the development of VLSI systems. DEVS (Discrete EVent System Specification) formalism specifies discrete event systems in a hierarchical, modular form. This formalism provides clear and sound semantics to describe complex VLSI systems. We are using the formalism for the functional verification and the performance evaluation of a real DSP processor. Now we use the formalism in describing models, which have enough information to be synthesized. Then the DEVS models are translated into synthesizable VHDL programs. This method provides several advantages over the previous approach that starts a system description with VHDL. Using DEVS formalism allows designers to concentrate on the dynamics of a target system. The formalism provides an efficient simulation framework. We can apply formal verification without any additional annotation or annoying mathematical notation. A well-defined model management methodology is also provided. These advantages make the increasing design complexity of VLSI systems more manageable and the productivity of development higher.
