This paper describes a discrete-event simulation model for performance evaluation of practical fixed and moving block railway signalling systems using track conductor loops to transmit continuous information between wayside and train. The fixed block system simulated has unidirectional transmission, and the moving block system has bidirectional transmission. The simulation results identify the physical features which limit the performance of these types of block signalling systems, and show the importance of considering train dynamics in moving block signalling system design.< >

In this paper new methods for time delay and frequency delay estimation are introduced based on the theory of alpha-stable distributions. It is shown that these methods are robust for both Gaussian and non-Gaussian impulsive noise environments. Their improved performance is clearly demonstrated through analytical results and simulation experiments with both computer generated data and actual radar clutter data.

Multi sensor based fire detection (MSbFD) systems are one of the important current developments in automatic fire detection technology. The two main objectives of this progress are the still unacceptable false alarm behaviour and improvements in the fire detection capabilities (i.e. shorter detection times) of fire detection systems. The use of more than one sensor in a fire detector gives an improved image of the environment monitored and hence allows a safer alarm decision. Multi sensor technology allows but does imply the enhancement of fire detection systems in the desired directions. The crucial point is the evaluation and interpretation of the signals produced by the monitored phenomena. This signal processing (detection algorithm) mostly determines the detectors capabilities. Due to the availability of microcontrollers applicable to fire detector technology with its severe technical constraints (i.e. power consumption) modern signal processing techniques (neural networks, fuzzy logic) can be used. The paper presents a MSbFD algorithm using two fire parameters (temperature and optical smoke density). These two sensors were chosen since ionization systems may become increasingly difficult to apply because of the environmental regulations being imposed on them. The evaluation and processing of the sensor signals is carried out by the use of fuzzy logic. The concept of the algorithm is outlined and its performance and robustness in the fire and the non-fire case is shown by simulation results.

As the operational requirements placed on airborne surveillance systems increase many in-service systems are approaching the limits of their performance. This problem is compounded by modifications to the systems, such as the change of displays and addition of recording equipment which causes the systems not to be ergonomically and psychophysiologically optimized. simulation has been conducted and sensor system modelling performed to assess the improvement in operational performance that is attainable by the application of image processing techniques viable for implementation in the real-time airborne environment. Equipments have been developed and operated in-service from which operational reports have confirmed the results of the system modelling. Future upgrades of the processing system will enable the application of such processing to a range of in-service systems as an intermediate, low cost system upgrade.

A linear algorithm for two-dimensional (2-D) least square (LS) approximation in the frequency domain is presented. The algorithm is based on the equation error model. The approximation yields a 2-D rational function in the complex variables, or equivalently a 2-D autoregressive, moving-average (ARMA) process. The proposed two-dimensional, least square, frequency domain (2D-LS-FD) algorithm can efficiently represent 2-D signals or images. It is also capable of accurately modeling 2-D linear and shift invariant (LSI) stable systems, when the model has a sufficient order relative to the unknown and the identification noise is negligible. This paper will also discuss, with proofs, the important existence, uniqueness and convergence properties associated with this technique. simulation examples for signal and system modeling are given to show the excellent performance of the algorithm. In addition, the successful application of the developed algorithm to image noise cancellation is also presented.

A rate control in video coding using an analysis model is described. Video coding and the rate control presented in this paper are MPEG2 and its Test Model since they are known to provide better performance than the conventional one. The rate control can be modeled as a linear feedback system with some statistical assumptions. By this model, we can adjust the feedback response of the system. It is required to generate constant bits per picture for the communication application since it gives the shorter delay by using a smaller area of the buffer memory. Thus, the method to improve the tracking ability to the target bit in a certain period is proposed. It can generate more precise bit amount for a group of pictures (GOP) than the normal case. The deviation from the target value at the GOP level can be lowered to less than 1/70 in the simulation It can be applied to any video coding which determines a quantization step at every macroblock.

This paper describes applications of maximum likelihood adaptive neural system (MLANS) to the characterization of clutter in IR images and to the identification of targets. The characterization of image clutter is needed to improve target detection and to enhance the ability to compare performance of different algorithms using diverse imagery data. Enhanced unambiguous IFF is important for fratricide reduction while automatic cueing and targeting is becoming an ever increasing part of operations. We utilized MLANS which is a parametric neural network that combines optimal statistical techniques with a model-based approach. This paper shows that MLANS outperforms classical classifiers, the quadratic classifier and the nearest neighbor classifier, because on the one hand it is not limited to the usual Gaussian distribution assumption and can adapt in real time to the image clutter distribution;on the other hand MLANS learns from fewer samples and is more robust than the nearest neighbor classifiers. Future research will address uncooperative IFF using fused IR and MMW data.

The authors have developed a conceptual design for a multiprocessor system to implement multidimensional digital signal processing applications. Their approach is to develop an application specific computing system instead of a specific hardware solution. The application specific computing system can be used as a research tool for exploring new approaches to problems. In addition, it can be used to achieve high performance at reasonable costs since it can use commercially available processors. They present a performance evaluation of our system using the 2-D FIR filter as an example. They explain their approach to implementing the 2-D FIR filter by first reviewing their previous implementation of the 2-D IIR filter.< >

We present a method of extracting the digital inphase (I) and quadrature (Q) components from oversampled bandpass signals using narrow-band bandpass Hilbert transformers. Down-conversion of the digitized IF signals to baseband and reduction of the quantization noise are accomplished by the multistage decimator with the complex coefficient bandpass digital filters (BPFs), of which the bandpass Hilbert transformers are composed. Most of the complex coefficient BPFs in the multistage decimator can be replaced with the lowpass filters (LPFs) under some conditions, which reduces computational burden. We evaluate the signal to quantization noise ratio of the I and Q components for the sinusoidal input by computer simulation. simulation results show that the equivalent amplitude resolution of the I and Q components can be increased by 3 bits in comparison with non-oversampling case.< >
