There are two demanding needs which must be fulfilled to further the development of automatic target recognition systems. One is analytical modeling for performance prediction and the other is a disciplined evaluation methodology for automatic target recognition algorithms. Currently both areas are in their infancy.
The analytical modeling for automatic target recognition performanceevaluation and for prediction of algorithm performances has been investigated, both as they relate to human visual performances and as a tool for algorithm development.
The matched filter approach presented a good limiting performance for target detection in uncluttered scenes with complete knowledge- of the target characteristics. The comparision of the matched filter detection performance to human performance model have produced some interesting results.

This paper provides an overview of an advanced simulation capability currently in use for analyzing visible and infrared sensor systems. The software system, called VISTAS (VISIBLE/INFRARED SENSOR TRADES, ANALYSES, AND simulationS) combines classical imageprocessing techniques with detailed sensor models to produce static and time dependent simulations of a variety of sensor systems including imaging, tracking, and point target detection systems. systems modelled to date include space-based scanning line-array sensors as well as staring 2-dimensional array sensors which can be used for either imaging or point source detection. All simulations are initiated by inputting either a Below-the-Horizon (BTH) or an Above-the-Horizon (ATH) background scene which may be either real data or a synthetic construct. Atmospheric modelling and spectral extension techniques are applied where appropriate to generate a background scene with appropriate spectral characteristics. Also where appropriate, target signatures are computed and incorporated into the scene. Detailed models of the sensor system transfer functions which include the optics point-spread-function (PSF), detector aperture, focal plane electronics, and analog and/or digital filtering are used to describe the sensor. Detailed noise models are also included as well as the spatial/temporal sampling details of the focal plane architecture. These detailed models are used to degrade and reformat the input imagery. The output of an imaging sensor simulation is a 2-dimensional image representing the data stream produced by the sensor. Such simulations have been useful in evaluating the quality and utility of imagery expected from various sensor designs. Tracking and point-target detection systems are modelled in the same manner as imaging systems with the addition of time-dependent (analog or digital) signalprocessing, and the inclusion of jitter spectra and platform drift in the simulation. This paper presents an adaptive or self-learning filter design intended for use in real-time closed loop pointing control systems engaging multiple targets. The design approach is based upon use of a performance index (based upon the Mahalanobis generalized distance function) and multiple filters processed in parallel using the same nonlinear measurements as input. Application of performance index criteria to the statistics of individual filter residuals allows the selection of the optimum filter set without the time delays typically encountered and thereby allows the composite filter structure to adapt (or self-learn) to uncertainties in modeling target acceleration capabilities. An advantage of this approach is that it also provides to an operator (or a robotic controller) the confidence level of tracking system performance against a maneuvering target. This information is of interest for deployment of counter-measures (e.g., fire control eventing, alarms, engagement priority, etc) or simply for laboratory system tests of design adequacy.

Application of the Object-Oriented Design of Reliable/Reconfigurable Architectures (OODRA) workbench to the performance simulation of a reconfigurable adaptive digital beamforming architecture is described in this paper. The performance effects due to chip/wafer partitioning and reconfiguration for fault tolerance and yield enhancement are presented. The experiments described illustrate use of the OODRA workbench in architectural-level performanceevaluation of algorithm-specific reconfigurable architectures, particularly for signalprocessing applications.

A hybrid approach to spread-spectrum-system evaluation is presented. Hardware is used to generate signals of interest with appropriate signal environments and a very flexible computer simulation system to model the receiver functions. The software package chosen is the Block Oriented simulation System (BOSS). The benefits of using software simulations mixed with hardware-generated signals are numerous, including realizing the effects of A/D (analog/digital) converters on the digital signalprocessing chain. External inputs to the system are easily combined by using hardware to accurately simulate the desired signal environment. Actual design time and cost can be reduced because less computer simulation time is required and complex receiver architectures are implemented with BOSS. There is, therefore, a high potential to greatly reduce the research and development time spent on systems analysis. Some of these advantages are demonstrated by an analysis of the performance of a synchronization method for direct sequence systems.< >
