Interest in the area of control of systems defined by partial differential Equations has increased strongly in recent years. A major reason has been the requirement of these systems for sensible continuum mechanical modelling and optimization or control techniques which account for typical physical phenomena. Particular examples of problems on which substantial progress has been made are the control and stabilization of mechatronic structures, the control of growth of thin films and crystals, the control of Laser and semi-conductor devices, and shape optimization problems for turbomachine blades, shells, smartmaterials and microdiffractive optics. This volume contains original articles by world reknowned experts in the fields of optimal control of partial differential equations, shape optimization, numerical methods for partial differential equations and fluid dynamics, all of whom have contributed to the analysis and solution of many of the problems discussed. The collection provides a state-of-the-art overview of the most challenging and exciting recent developments in the field. It is geared towards postgraduate students and researchers dealing with the theoretical and practical aspects of a wide variety of high technology problems in applied mathematics, fluid control, optimal design, and computer modelling.

Two key words for mechanical engineering in the future are Micro and Intelligence. It is weIl known that the leadership in the intelligence technology is a marter of vital importance for the future status of industrial society, and thus national research projects for intelligent materials, structures and machines have started not only in advanced countries, but also in developing countries. materials and structures which have self-sensing, diagnosis and actuating systems, are called intelligent or smart, and are of growing research interest in the world. In this situation, the IUT AM symposium on Dynamics 0/ Advanced materials and smartstructures was a timely one. smartmaterials and structures are those equipped with sensors and actuators to achieve their designed performance in achanging environment. They have complex structural properties and mechanical responses. Many engineering problems, such as interface and edge phenomena, mechanical and electro-magnetic interaction/coupling and sensing, actuating and control techniques, arise in the development ofintelligent structures. Due to the multi-disciplinary nature ofthese problems, all ofthe classical sciences and technologies, such as applied mathematics, material science, solid and fluid mechanics, control techniques and others must be assembled and used to solve them. IUTAM weIl understands the importance ofthis emerging technology. An IUTAM symposium on smartstructures and Structronic Systems (Chaired by U.

I was introduced to structural control by Raphael Haftka and Bill Hallauer during a one year stay at the Aerospace and Ocean Engineering department of Virginia Tech., during the academic year 1985-1986. At that time, there was a tremendous interest in large space structures in the USA, mainly because of the Strategic Defense Initiative and the space station program. Most of the work was theoretical or numerical, but Bill Hallauer was one of the few experimen talists trying to implement control systems which worked on actual structures. When I returned to Belgium, I was appointed at the chair of Mechanical Engi neering and Robotics at ULB, and I decided to start some basic vibration control experiments on my own. A little later, smartmaterials became widely available and offered completely new possibilities, particularly for precision structures, but also brought new difficulties due to the strong coupling in their constitutive equations, which requires a complete reformulation of the classical modelling techniques such as finite elements. We started in this new field with the sup port of the national and regional governments, the European Space Agency, and some bilateral collaborations with European aerospace companies. Our Active structures Laboratory was inaugurated in October 1995.
