SELEX Sistemi Integrati is now watching toward the future to reinforce its leadership in the state of the art of radar systems. The strong position in the market has been achieved by delivering top radar performance in many fields of application and it has been based on the capability to manage the proper technology insertion in its radar systems. For each radar product the Company has identified its own key technology components and has planned its development and insertion to take the right advantage from a well established radar knowledge. The same winning approach is now followed for the next generation of SELEX-SI radar systems. In the paper it will be shown how the Company has developed technology and radar systems together in the past, how it is delivering up to date solutions now and how it is preparing the new generation of radar systems by investing again in technology. In this field the focus will be on the new multifunction/multirole radar applications and on the technological capabilities that SELEX-SI is developing by taking advantage of its Research and development facilities.

Geiger-mode multi-pixel APD is recognized as the best alternative solid-state photo-sensor for vacuum PMTs in various applications. Its magnetic field immunity and high gain have made it popular in MR/PET and high-energy physics detector research. In this paper, we utilized its compactness and high gain in the design of a TOF PET detector. In typical block detectors based on PMT, the full timing capability of both the PMT and scintillator could not be achieved due to the light sharing used in the Anger logic scheme. Since the Geiger-mode APD is a solid-state based technology, we can utilize one-to-one coupling between a scintillator and the photo-sensor to utilize the best timing capability of both. Also, the high photon detection efficiency of MPPC, Geiger mode APD from Hamamatsu, would help improve timing resolution. We made a block detector based on a 4 × 4 array of 3 × 3 mm 2 MPPC coupled to a 4 × 4 array of 3 × 3 × 25 mm 3 LYSO crystals to evaluate its performance. We have achieved an average energy resolution of 9% and 314ps coincidence timing resolution with very good uniformity. This shows that the solid-state based photo-sensor can be used for TOF PET detector. During the development of the detector, we recognized that a compact and low power electronic readout scheme is one of the biggest challenges, including its cost, for MPPC or other Geiger-mode APDs to be realized as products.

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to report the development trends and emerging applications of non-GPS localisation sensors. Design/methodology/approach - The principles of gyroscopes and micro-electro-mechanical systems-based inertial sensors are introduced, followed by a review of products from various companies, and their applications. Findings - Highly integrated systems in robust solid-state materials are being packed into smaller housings, opening up new applications for inertial navigation sensors. The Kalman filter algorithm is widely used to remove noise from multi-sensor data and provide reliable attitude and heading measurements. applications range from stabilising cameras and detecting the motion of towed sonar arrays, to autonomous robot navigation, motion analysis in sports science, and navigating first-response rescue workers in disaster zones. Originality/value - Concentrates on non-GPS localisation technology, and shows that new developments are revolutionising position-finding and position-controlling applications.

Electrochemical biosensors transform biochemical reactions into electrical information through various electrode transducers. With their high sensitivity and specificity, electrochemical biosensors are ideal agents to detect many inorganic and organic substances. Recently, the microfabrication of biosensors has matured to the point where high density arrays can be generated. A microsystem comprised of such arrays and an integrated circuit (IC) suitable for sensor interrogation and information extraction enables the capabilities of electrochemical sensors to be employed in applications that require miniaturization, including point of care medical diagnostics and distributed safety and security monitoring. In such a microsystem, the interrogation IC must provide extremely high sensitivity, to read the weak response from the miniaturized sensors, and be capable of multi-channel simultaneous readout, to support high density (∼100 elements) arrays. This dissertation focuses on overcoming the challenges and limitations in electronics that impede the development of electrochemical microsystems. Specifically, this research targets electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, an essential assay technique for many sensor interfaces. Several possible architectures for multichannel impedance spectroscopy were explored in this dissertation. The key functional blocks, identified as an impedance extractor and digitizer and a wide frequency range quadrature signal generator, were designed, tested, and implemented within a prototype biosensor array system to validate the design. The results of this research pave the way for further development of ICs for electrochemical sensors and lay a solid foundation for future implementations of fully integrated electrochemical impedance microsystems.

The review covers main applications of conducting polymers in chemical sensors and biosensors. The first part is focused on intrinsic and induced receptor properties of conducting polymers, such as pH sensitivity, sensitivity to inorganic ions and organic molecules as well as sensitivity to gases. Induced receptor properties can be also formed by molecularly imprinted polymerization or by immobilization of biological receptors. Immobilization strategies are reviewed in the second part. The third part is focused on applications of conducting polymers as transducers and includes usual optical (fluorescence, SPR, etc.) and electrical (conductometric, amperometric, potentiometric, etc.) transducing techniques as well as organic chemosensitive semiconductor devices. An assembly of stable sensing structures requires strong binding of conducting polymers to solid supports. These aspects are discussed in the next part. Finally, an application of combinatorial synthesis and high-throughput analysis to the development and optimization of sensing materials is described. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The instruments on board the latest gamma observatories (INTEGRAL, AGILE, GLAST) combines technologies based either on solid state or on scintillator detector, the first one being favorite when a low energy threshold and a good energy resolution is required, the latter being more convenient for large volume when worse performance are still acceptable. With the development of new scintillator materials and even more with new low-noise ligth readout devices the differences between the two techniques are narrowing and for some application the cheaper scintillator detector can compete with solid state devices. Furthermore both these detector concepts can be combined in a single compact device by means of the Pulse Shape Discrimination (PSD) technique that allows to discriminate direct interactions in silicon from scintillation events. Combined in arrays they can be the base for position senstive planes to be combined with coded mask in imaging instruments or the component of new generation Compton based telescopes. For this purpose two prototype systems have been designed and realized, both based on a 20 channels Silicon Drift Detectors (SDD) monolithic array coupled to individual 1 cm thick CsI(Tl) scintillator crystals. In the first system the detector readout is implemented with ASICs tailored specifically to the SDD readout, while in the second system the PSD readout of the array is implemented. The performance of these kind of detectors tested in the various prototypes as well as their applications in new generation space telescopes are discussed.

A new solid state detector, known as Medipix, developed by a consortium of academic institutions has been evolved from a technology originally created for use at the LHC at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. This technology is being harnessed for use as an active personal dosimeter for space radiation applications. The pixel based technology embeds the entire required readout electronics for each pixel withing the pixel's 55 micron square footprint. That allows the seamless tiling of multiple arrays of detectors. Prototypes have been exposed to heavy ion beams at the HIMAC facility in Japan and at the Texas A&M cyclotron in the US. The results are very encouraging. Extensive experience is being gained in using the detectors with appropriate converters for simultaneous neutron dosimetry as well. Ultimate versions may be deployed that are both wireless and self-contained, as well as having a package size comparable to current passive personal dosimeters. Prospect are excellent for building them into spacesuits, which would provide ground-based real-time monitoring of the detailed doses being taken by crew members during such high-risk periods as EVAs. These dosimeters could also be used as active area monitors in a variety of both space and ground-based applications.

A comparative analysis of one-port Colpitt and two-port Pierce SAW oscillators for DMMP vapor sensing

This paper reports an experimental study on chemical sensitivity and noise behavior of Colpitt and Pierce SAW oscillators based on 433.92 MHz one-port and two-port SAW resonator devices, respectively. The oscillators are characterized for phase noise as well as Allan variance. The sensitivity for DMMP (di-methyl methyl phosphonate) vapor is imparted by providing a diallyl-bisphenol polymer precursor as a selective interface coated on to both the SAW devices in an identical manner. Comparative vapor sensing experiments are carried out under simultaneous exposure to the same DMMP vapor stream in different ranges of vapor concentration and duration. A new data acquisition method is employed which is wireless and automated. It uses an antenna pickup at the input of a spectrum analyzer with PC control interface. The results show that the two-port Pierce oscillator is more stable but less sensitive than the one-port Colpitt oscillator. It is found that under the conditions of analyte exposure durations longer than 30 s the one-port Colpitt oscillator yields higher signal to noise ratios. The results are interpreted in terms of phase response characteristics and different sensitivities of the one-port and two-port SAW devices towards mass loading and viscoelastic effects. The emerging field of microsystems technology is enabling the innovative development of a micro optical fiber interrogation system for potential integration into air platforms structural health monitoring and management capabilities. Our efforts in such development is based on micron size optical waveguides using arrayed waveguide gratings (AWG) based demultiplexer for highly multiplexed fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor arrays. In this document, a proposed system concept, its operating principle and proposed interrogation methodology are presented. Initial results demonstrate the ability of the system to obtain measurement resolution of 1 pm or better (equivalent to 0.1°C for temperature sensing) and response time as short as two milli-second. Owing to the small size and ruggedness of AWG, it is potentially feasible to fabricate an all solid state (no moving parts), palm size, robust and high-resolution interrogation system that responds to air platform requirements.
