Ground Control Stations (GCS) are essential tools to monitor and command real-world complex missions involving Unmanned Vehicles (UVs). As the number and types of UVs in the mission grows, implementing a robust and adaptable GCS, capable of simplifying and reducing operator' interactions and mental workloads, becomes an engineering challenge. To address it, this paper presents a new Adaptive-Real-Time (ART)-GCS that 1) allows to monitor and control a runtime changing number of heterogeneous UVs, 2) adapt its GUI to the mission requirements and operators workload to minimize their fatigue and stress, and 3) provide support to experiments with actual and simulated UVs. To show its benefits in real-world missions, this paper presents a field experiment where, for safety reasons, a simulated unmanned aerial vehicle has to find an oil-spill that must be enclosed by a containment boom dragged by two real unmanned surface vehicles.

The current autonomous driving architecture places a heavy burden in signal processing for the graphics processing units (GPUs) in the car. This directly translates into battery drain and lower energy efficiency, crucial factors in electric vehicles. This is due to the high bit rate of the captured video and other sensing inputs, mainly due to Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) sensor at the top of the car which is an essential feature in autonomous vehicles. LiDAR is needed to obtain a high precision map for the vehicle AI to make relevant decisions. However, this is still a quite restricted view from the car. This is the same even in the case of cars without a LiDAR such as Tesla. The existing LiDARs and the cameras have limited horizontal and vertical fields of visions. In all cases it can be argued that precision is lower, given the smaller map generated. This also results in the accumulation of a large amount of data in the order of several TBs in a day, the storage of which becomes challenging. If we are to reduce the effort for the processing units inside the car, we need to uplink the data to edge or an appropriately placed cloud. However, the required data rates in the order of several Gbps are difficult to be met even with the advent of 5G. Therefore, we propose to have a coordinated set of LiDAR's outside at an elevation which can provide an integrated view with a much larger field of vision (FoV) to a centralized decision making body which then sends the required control actions to the vehicles with a lower bit rate in the downlink and with the required latency. Since its release, "The Design Engine" has been played by groups of students, teachers, and individuals looking to spark self-guided training. "The Design Engine" is a direct response to educators' requests for better classroom tools surrounding inspiration and 3D printing. By prompting participants to create their own original, imaginative works-instead of using pre-selected example-steachers can keep their students better motivated through the process of mastering desktop 3D printing. We are hosting a brand new SIGGRAPH-edition of "The Design Engine," a constantly evolving series of challenges hosted within the Studio. Participants of all backgrounds can join for a short startup round, or stick around to design and develop their projects using the tools available in the SIGGRAPH Studio Workshop.

Dynamic Chinese Painting is a rendering style for animations. However, the production method today which relies on the artists to generate suitable textures and sceneries is time-consuming. In this paper, we propose a system to generate a realistic appearance of Yangzhou School Chinese Painting koi (decorative carp) animation in 3D space. Our system includes repainting the original texture, enhancing the contour of the 3D input models, and adding fin-stripes to fit the target style. For the interactive part, our system not only allows users to add ripples to the scene as the user-scene interaction but also generates water streamline as the koi-scene interaction. Through our system, a new Dynamic Chinese Painting scene can be automatically generated based on the 3D input models and user-inputs.

In this paper we study the problem of the interaction of soft bodies modeled with mass spring models (MSM) and static elements of the environment. We show that in such setup it is possible to couple standard time evolution of MSMs with collision responses in a way, that does not require complex processing for multi collision situations while successfully preventing object inter-penetration. Moreover we show how to achieve similar energy dissipation for models with different resolutions when the friction is present.
