In this paper, a technique is presented to locate and track the facial areas in image and videodatabases. The extracted facial regions are used to obtain a number of features that are suitable for content-based storage and retrieval. The proposed face localization method consists of essentially two components: i) a color processing unit, and ii) a shape and color analysis module. The color processing component utilizes the distribution of skin-tones in the HSV color space to obtain an initial set of candidate regions or objects. The latter shape and color analysis module is used to correctly identify the facial regions when falsely detected objects are extracted. A number of features such as hair color, skin-tone, and face location and size are subsequently determined from the extracted facial areas. The hair and skin colors provide useful descriptions related to the human characteristics while the face location and size can reveal information about the activity within the scene (i.e. spatial relationships with other objects), and the type of image (i.e. portrait shot, complete body). These features can be effectively combined with others and employed in user queries to retrieve particular facial images.

This book provides an in-depth treatment of the three important topics related to image and videodatabases: restoration, watermarking and retrieval . It is the result of the participation of the Delft University of Technology in the European Union ACTS program, a pre-competitive R&D program on Advanced Communications Technologies and Services (1994-1998). In particular the book has benefited from participation in the AURORA and SMASH projects respectively automated film and video restoration and storage for multimedia systems (watermarking & retrieval).

Ire introduce a simple image coding method, the block truncation coding (BTC) technique, as a novel approach to the construction of colour imagedatabases. It is shown that BTC cars riot only be used to compress the images thus achieving storage efficiency, the BTC codes cart also be used directly, to construct image features for effective imageretrieval. From the BTC code we have developed an image feature termed the BTC colour co-occurrence matrix (BCCM) as an effective measure of image contents. Experimental results are presented to show that BCCM is comparable to state of the art techniques, such as color correlogram, in imageretrieval.

In this paper we present most recent evolution of JACOB, a system we developed for image and video content-based storage and retrieval. The system is based on two separate archives: a ''Features DB'' and a ''Raw-data DB''. When a user puts a query, a search is done in the ''Features DB'';the selected items are taken from the ''Raw-data DB'' and shown to the user. Two kinds of sessions are allowed: ''database population'' and ''database querying''. During a ''database population'' session the user inserts new data into the archive. The input data can consist of digital images or videos. videos are split into shots and for each shot one or more representative frames (r-frames) are automatically extracted. Shots and r-frames are then characterized, either in automatic or semi-automatic way, and stored in the archives. Automatic features' extraction consists of computing some low-level global features. Semi-automatic features' extraction is done by using annotation tools that perform operations that aren't currently possible with fully automatic methods. To this aim semi-automatic motion based segmentation and labeling tools have been developed. During a ''database querying'' session, queries direct or by example are allowed. Queries (direct or by example) may be iterated and variously combined to satisfy the query in the smallest number of steps. Multifeature querying is based on statistical analysis of the feature space.
